Getting closer and closer to classic Doctor Who again. TARDIS not turning up
at the right location as usual, deliberately taking them into danger and
then disappearing. Also get to see what an Ice Warrior really looks like.

Once more the same story briefs are being recycled over and over again. This
time it's the same one as Dalek, "write a story about a stranded alien that
thinks it's the last of its kind".

Obviously the guy with the beard was intended to be based on Sean Connery in
'The hunt for Red October' but the fact that all the Russians sounded like
they attended some British public school or other didn't feel right. It
would have been better if they all sounded like they had Russian accents
apart from maybe the professor who was into the New Romantics.

Jenna-Louise Coleman is brilliant as Clara. Matt Smith great as usual.

Liked all the tension that was built up.

If the old serial format had been resurrected then this story could have
been developed further over 4 to 6 episodes with episodes 1-2 being set in
the submarine and the rest on land after the Ice Warrior had been rescued.

Best series so far since Doctor Who returned to our screens.

10/10

Now how does the Doctor get the TARDIS back from the south pole?

I said that. Thing is, isn't this recycling getting a bit blatant?

I initially thought it was a bit lazy, but then I ended up thinking it
was simply honest. What is the point of doing an accent when it is
established that in fact they are all talking Russian, and the TARDIS,
even though it buggered off, is doing the translating? Seems a lot of
extra work to not only translate, but do funny accents as well.

That's what I was thinking. If it indeed follows the pattern set by
"Dalek", we'll be seeing more of our frosty friends in the future. I
think the episode did a good job in making us want more of the Ice
Warriors; plus I've always wondered what they might have looked like
under the shell.

My only real complaint is that I would have preferred to not have seen
the face of the creature; some things are better left to the
imagination (especially as the CGI wasn't quite convincing enough).

Since he's a "grand marshall", I suppose that means they've done away
with the leader class?

That's actually a good point. All of the "leader class" Ice Warriors
were seen in stories set in the future. The first Ice Warriors story
also involved unfrozen Warriors (from the last ice age... 12,000 years
ago or so) and they didn't have any Vaderesque leader classes.

I got that wrong. "The Ice Warriors" (original story) was set in an
ice age (far?) in the FUTURE, so we've never seen an Ice Warrior as
old as the one in "Cold War". Still, nothing goes against your theory
that the leader class was a future innovation, so I think that
explains it all.

I thought the sub was knackered. Besides, that would take ages and be
really boring. Cant see Clara and the Doc sitting that still for that
long at all.

So, they would probably have to be taken to the USSR (80's remember),
and flown from here. However, in the hight of the cold war, I'm not so
sure the KGB would let the Doctor and Clara through that easily,
especially after such an incident, on a nuclear sub, with a dead
political officer. So, off they go for interrogation, which likely means
a medical...

Dunno how far people want to take this fiction, but as I understand it,
Clara would probably still be in a Siberian prison as we speak, while
parts of the Doctor would be in jars. Probably disappeared and dead.

Which is why I'm sticking with a TARDIS recall.

Mind you, I'd love to see a follow up episode. Clara an the Doc end up
in Soviet interrogation, they discover the Doctor is unusual, monsters
turn up and they get away some how.

Well, it does work better in my mind anyway. I can well imagine the
Soviets being deeply suspicious of UNIT, given its heavily military
vibe. On the other hand, I can well imagine Jack having a "friend" in
the KGB.

Ah, ah, ah, I've got it. Jack Ryan, or John Clarke and the Foleys get
him out. Red October? Subs. 80's. Tom Clancy. Deep Trouble. Yeah,
that'll do me. I want the episode, "The Doctor of the Kremlin".

Too much of a tangent?

Dunno how far people want to take this fiction, but as I understand it,
Clara would probably still be in a Siberian prison as we speak, while
parts of the Doctor would be in jars. Probably disappeared and dead.
Which is why I'm sticking with a TARDIS recall.
Mind you, I'd love to see a follow up episode. Clara an the Doc end up
in Soviet interrogation, they discover the Doctor is unusual, monsters
turn up and they get away some how.

Maybe the UNIT credentials help out.
Well, my TARDIS recall idea was shot down because its not been shown to
happen before. So, is there any instance of UNIT working with the
Soviets or KGB? I don't recall any, but I'm not *that* much of a fan. If
so, then yeah, that would be the obvious thing to do.
Was Torchwood around? Jack?

Now how does the Doctor get the TARDIS back from the south pole?
Well, if it can piss off on its own, why cant he recall it?
I don't think the Doctor has ever been able to recall the TARDIS. I'm
trying to think of an example, but I'm coming up empty. Perhaps his
UNIT pals can come and pick him up.
I'm inclined to think, given the circumstances, that Zhukov will indeed
give him a lift
I thought the sub was knackered. Besides, that would take ages and be
really boring. Cant see Clara and the Doc sitting that still for that
long at all.
So, they would probably have to be taken to the USSR (80's remember),
and flown from here. However, in the hight of the cold war, I'm not so
sure the KGB would let the Doctor and Clara through that easily,
especially after such an incident, on a nuclear sub, with a dead
political officer. So, off they go for interrogation, which likely means
a medical...

With most of the crew dead and the remaining 'important people' on his
side it would be time to whip out the old physic paper and convince the
rescue team and all others of his credentials as a KGB officer who
stopped a deep sleeper as the politico who murdered crew and crippled
the sub so that a launch by the sub of two missiles could justify a
multi missile counter attack by the US*. Further investigations would
require him to visit the Soviet Antarctica base... All sorted - no problem!

*very long sentence there!

Yeah, but would 80's Soviets be in any way interested, given that the
Doc and Clara infiltrated a Soviet nuclear sub? Then, if they did allow
a western para military organisation in to at least see the Doc and
Clara, 2what would they have made of the fact that suddenly they were
talking English?

The more I think about this, the more I want to see or read this story
more than I enjoyed the episode we did see. It reminds me of Trek
episodes where they end up in the 60's or something.

No. Why would you want to.

The capture of the Doc and Clara on a nuclear sub in the 80's would have
been a massive state secret. The KGB would have locked the situation
down completely. The Doc and Clara would have been seen a hugely hostile
and worrisome.

The UN, and or UNIT would have not gotten anywhere near them. Especially
when the non-West see the UN as the US. Which is why I suggest that
Torchwood sneaking in some how is easier to buy in to.

I reckon you'd need an inside man, and I reckon Jack has shagged him.

Would you shoot a UN employee if you were a Soviet officer?
No. Why would you want to.
The capture of the Doc and Clara on a nuclear sub in the 80's would have
been a massive state secret. The KGB would have locked the situation down
completely. The Doc and Clara would have been seen a hugely hostile and
worrisome.
The UN, and or UNIT would have not gotten anywhere near them. Especially
when the non-West see the UN as the US. Which is why I suggest that
Torchwood sneaking in some how is easier to buy in to.
UNIT wouldn't have been set up by the UN unless the Russians had agreed to
it.
Correct.

Now how does the Doctor get the TARDIS back from the south
pole?
Well, if it can piss off on its own, why cant he recall it?
I don't think the Doctor has ever been able to recall the TARDIS.
I'm
trying to think of an example, but I'm coming up empty. Perhaps
his
UNIT pals can come and pick him up.
I'm inclined to think, given the circumstances, that Zhukov will
indeed
give him a lift
I thought the sub was knackered. Besides, that would take ages and be
really boring. Cant see Clara and the Doc sitting that still for that
long at all.
So, they would probably have to be taken to the USSR (80's remember),
and flown from here. However, in the hight of the cold war, I'm not so
sure the KGB would let the Doctor and Clara through that easily,
especially after such an incident, on a nuclear sub, with a dead
political officer. So, off they go for interrogation, which likely
means
a medical...

Jack?
With most of the crew dead and the remaining 'important people' on his
side it would be time to whip out the old physic paper and convince the
rescue team and all others of his credentials as a KGB officer who
stopped a deep sleeper as the politico who murdered crew and crippled
the sub so that a launch by the sub of two missiles could justify a
multi missile counter attack by the US*. Further investigations would
require him to visit the Soviet Antarctica base... All sorted - no problem!
*very long sentence there!
Yeah, that could work well enough.
Well a UN Scientific Advisor might work too.

Which adds another question. Assuming the Doctor goes to the Antarctic to

Fair enough.

Still can't see the Soviets of the 80's letting anything UN in on
anything that significant on board something that sensitive. Frankly,
I'd say the same for the US. For example, were the UN informed of thing
like stealth planes? Were there UN all over groom lake? No, cant see it
at all.

Did the writers in the 80's ever suggest Soviet co-operation with UNIT?

AC
Would you shoot a UN employee if you were a Soviet officer?
No. Why would you want to.
The capture of the Doc and Clara on a nuclear sub in the 80's would have
been a massive state secret. The KGB would have locked the situation down
completely. The Doc and Clara would have been seen a hugely hostile and
worrisome.
The UN, and or UNIT would have not gotten anywhere near them. Especially
when the non-West see the UN as the US. Which is why I suggest that
Torchwood sneaking in some how is easier to buy in to.
UNIT wouldn't have been set up by the UN unless the Russians had agreed to
it.
UNIT is worldwide so Moscow must have contributed.

I reckon you'd need an inside man, and I reckon Jack has shagged him.
Who? The head of the KGB? Wasn't that Vladimir Putin at the time?
Could be. If so, given some of his recent photos shoots, that kinda
supports my notion...

Buy not as well as a senior KGB officer stomping out anti-Soviet plots.
You don't ask guys like that why they have a young female with them for
fear of getting stomped! Also high enough in the Kremlin and they
probably have had dealings with the Doctor! (We only have not seen the
episodes involving the Doctor and Russians and Soviets due to their
state security and censorship ;-)

The only time that comes immediately to mind is... The very first time
UNIT is introduced, when UNIT borrows a Soviet moon rocket and nuclear
warhead. (Actually I do think they mention working with the soviets
other times but that's the only one I recall being more than just a
passing reference)

UNIT was United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, meaning that the Soviet Union would have been involved in creating and running it. Therefore, they should be willing to help a lost UNIT agent such as the Doctor.

Why doesn't the TARDIS have a recall option?
5000 miles on the other side of the planet?
Why not? Can't the TARDIS go anywhere in space and time?
The Doctor has jiggered his Companions' cell phones to be able to
communicate across vast stretches of space and time. Couldn't he devise
a similar system to summon the TARDIS?
Depends on the radition interference.

And the Matt Smith Doctor (having used up all his regenerations) would not have had the option of starting his regeneration to repair the damage caused by Soviet torturers, and then blasting his way out of custody with regeneration beams!

If the old serial format had been resurrected then this story could have
been developed further over 4 to 6 episodes with episodes 1-2 being set in
the submarine and the rest on land after the Ice Warrior had been rescued.
Too much, I think. The story would stretch and break.
Post by AC
Perhaps this is not the last we have heard from our Ice Warrior.
That's what I was thinking. If it indeed follows the pattern set by
"Dalek", we'll be seeing more of our frosty friends in the future. I
think the episode did a good job in making us want more of the Ice
Warriors; plus I've always wondered what they might have looked like
under the shell.
Well, if I had a 50p bet, I reckon will see lots of them later on. And
then it will probably be over done and cheapened. Always happens. Most
SF shows over expose the baddies in the end.
Post by Monsieur Tabernac
My only real complaint is that I would have preferred to not have seen
the face of the creature; some things are better left to the
imagination (especially as the CGI wasn't quite convincing enough).
The age old problem with monsters vs budget. I was kinda hoping we
wouldnt see more than brief flashes and the hands. That way, save the
budget, and use it in a later episode to do it better. But in the end,
"we" want to see the monster.

I cant either, but I fine it absurd to have have a send away function
with out any recall. Mind you, the Doctor seems to have no control over
where it goes, so I suppose its possible.

I said that. Thing is, isn't this recycling getting a bit blatant?

would have been better if they all sounded like they had Russian accents
I initially thought it was a bit lazy, but then I ended up thinking it
was simply honest. What is the point of doing an accent when it is
established that in fact they are all talking Russian, and the TARDIS,
even though it buggered off, is doing the translating? Seems a lot of
extra work to not only translate, but do funny accents as well.
Wouldn't it instead be extra trouble to translate the Russian speech into English with English accents instead of Russian accents?

Why didn't the Doctor ask that Martian to take him to the South Pole? I believe that he had time to do so before the Martian ship buzzed off.

The Doctor and Clara are on a Soviet nuclear submarine in 1983 with a Martian Ice Warrior. Clara wonders how the Ice Warrior firing off ONE missile could end the world. The Doctor points out that Earth was already at the edge. Clara points out that the world DIDN'T end in 1983, since she exists. The Doctor says that time can be rewritten. If time can be rewritten, how can there be "fixed points in time"? (Why can't the Doctor rewrite such disasters as the recent Paris terror attacks?).

A submarine crewman is caught by the Martian Ice Warrior. In desperation, he tells the Ice Warrior about the Soviet-American Cold War nuclear standoff, and proposes an alliance to win the Cold War. I imagine that the crewman was hoping that the Ice Warrior could assist the USSR in quickly building a defense against an all out US nuclear attack so that the USSR could conquer the world! I am imagining the Ice Warrior's ship shooting American missiles down with lasers, or erecting force fields around Soviet cities.

Great moments: The Soviet sub's nuclear war drill. It had me going for a minute.
The Martian Ice Warrior menacing the Soviet sub.
American rhetoric heating op
I propose the following US speech: "Our moral code will not allow us to stand by while the Syrian government slaughters the city of Aleppo. We are going to stop the slaughter and bring in aid, come Hell or high water! Please get out of our way!". I believe that this would impress Putin, especially when our planes start bombing Syrian troops. I am hopeful that Putin will respect our force.

If the US were to start bombing the Syrian military, how would we keep that fact a secret?

Don't the Syrians deserve fair warning that they will suffer if they obstruct our relief operations?

Plot Bunny: In the year 2017, Russia and the US are at each other's throats over the Ukraine and Syria. The Doctor arrives in a Russian missile silo, just as the Russians detect an American missile attack. The Doctor quickly determines that the readings are false, and tries frantically to convince the Russians of this fact. He might have to use his sonic to disable the Russian missiles to save the world. Now the Russians are really ticked off!

Clara wonders how the world could be destroyed in 1983 (via the Martian Ice Warrior triggering WWIII with a missile from that Soviet sub), when SHE exists! The Doctor says that history is in flux, it can be changed. Why is history/the timeline changeable in this episode, but fixed in other episodes? (Why isn't the survival of Earth in 1983 a "fixed point in time"? After all, the Doctor experienced undestroyed Earths in 1983 and after 1983).

Similar questions for "Pyramids of Mars" (In which the Doctor actually showed Sarah Jane Smith an alternate reality!), and for "Harriet Jones' 3 term Golden Age".

Great moments: The Martian ship tractoring the Soviet sub to the surface.

The Doctor discovering that his TARDIS is at the SOUTH Pole, having fled there when doused with sea water. At that point, the Martian ship is still hovering over the Soviet sub. Why doesn't the Doctor instantly ask the Martian ship to take him to the South Pole? He had plenty of time to do so before it flew off. (The Doctor did have time to perform the Martian salute, so he had time to yell up at the Martian ship "Clara and I left something at the South Pole. Could you take us there?")

When sea water pours on the TARDIS, it flees to the South Pole. Why is the TARDIS afraid of water?

The Doctor can program the TARDIS to automatically flee danger without the Doctor inside. Why can't he program it to automatically come to his rescue if he sends it a summoning signal?

How does the Doctor expect a Soviet SUB to take him to the landlocked South Pole?

Scene: A Soviet Union nuclear submarine.

Situation: A Martian Ice Warrior is on the loose, attacking members of the crew.

A scientist who is on the crew and the Doctor find a victim. The scientist exclaims "Good God!". Isn't that un-Soviet? Didn't the USSR outlaw religion?

After the Martian ship tractors the Russian sub to the surface and beams up the Martian Ice Warrior, the Doctor discovers that the TARDIS has wandered off to the SOUTH POLE! He asks the Russian sub captain for a lift. The Martian ship hasn't yet left. Why doesn't he ask the Martians also? (I thought that the Martians were going to give the Doctor a lift, but they flew off without him). The Doctor had plenty of time to shout up at the Martian ship "Could you give me a lift to Earth's South Pole? I left my vehicle there!".
