Problem with the divorce

The thing I don't get about the divorce lawyers and forensic
accountants is how are they magically supposed to pinpoint where all
Tony's illegal sources of money are? Haven't the Fed's been trying for
years?
Furthermore, and even more so, if the answer to the above question is
that they won't have to follow the same rules as the Fed's and they do
expose some or all of Tony's illegal cash flow sources, won't this
backfire on Carm? Once Tony's dealings get exposed in divorce court,
wouldn't that then leave the door open for the Fed's to step in? Instead
of Carm getting half of Tony's money, wouldn't the Fed's take all of it?
Wouldn't Tony end up in jail, and thus deny Carm from getting any future
alimony? It seems to me if Carm wins, EVERY ONE loses, herself included.
Is Carm that stupid? Are the writers that stupid? Am I the idiot here?

Yeah, but Carm doesn't know any specifics. She can tell them he is
involved in organized crime and gambling and the whole nine yards, and I
realize it is the function of the forensic accountant to take those
clues and sniff out the money, but the Fed's already know that too and
they haven't shut him down yet.

carmela signed the tax returns, stupid as she is right now, if she pursued this
angle with an atty, she would be as much indicted by the irs for tax evasion as
T would. she signed the returns knowing her spouse had undeclared income which
we all seen her admit to the atty this evening. (and i dunno where she found
this atty, he musta graduated law school from a school off the back of a
matchbook cover - cuz he shudda informed her of this) *sidebar: im a retired
tax auditor for the IRS...been there know that. anyhow....shes SOL as of the
moment.

The Feds haven't had Carm's insider knowledge. Also, forensic
accountants basically start in the present and move backwards - how can
Tony afford to live as he does on the money he says he earned over the
years. They don't have to know precisely where Tony is getting his
dough, just that it exists and Carm deserves a part of it.

They don't have to expose where the cash came from, just that it exists.
If they can prove the money is there, then he has to share it with Carm.

Under the aegis of attorney/client privilege, it doesn't matter what
turns up - it's information that no one can testify to - certainly not
Carm or her lawyer. All the law will see is that Carm is getting a huge
payment (one that Tony could say is wiping him out) without any formal
indication about where the funds came from.

The Feds *might* get some good leads, but not necessarily.

There is all sorts of stuff like the Krugerands stashed about the
house, gifts of big rings, furs, SUVs etc that when it gets into the
public record will make it easy for the feds to bootstrap it into
their own net worth case.

T's problem is that he cant issue himself a bonus today thru the front
companies to cover his ass for past years.

You mean dead men? I would love to see a guy ask the wrong question.
Some cars have very, very, volitile gas tanks, and a "brake failure"
can occur anytime.
won't this backfire on Carm?
Open fire on Carm, or maybe she will have a sudden urge to swim to
Italy. Tony can even help her with a ride for the first 20 miles.
Once Tony's dealings get exposed in divorce court,
Won't even get close.
Is Carm that stupid?
She ain't a genius. I think she thinks she is somehow shielded by the
law. Tony can end up unmarried two ways, death or divorce. She better
understand that when she makes it tougher to divorce her than kill
her, he will take the path of least resistance.

Good point - at best Carm is in a real Catch-22. She can either
accept a part of the small reported income, or she could try to find
additional income, at which point the Feds would take it all.

Poor Carm is learning that what she has now is as good as it's ever
gonna get for her.

Here's what I don't understand: obviously, the house is "on the books", so he's
got to report a large enough salary to afford that house, no? Or did they maybe
put it in a distant cousin's name or something, as a "gift"?

I think that most people could live on half of Tony's declared income, or the
alimony that would offer.
