Read any good ones lately? I recently read Mercedes Lackey's "Fire
and Ash" and while she has a demoralizing tendency to
over-explain, I found it a refreshing rewrite of the classic
Cinderella story.

Just finished Robert Jordan's latest, which I can't exactly recall the name
of, and Christopher Paolini's "Eldest". I thought both were good, despite
everyone saying the Robert Jordan one was lousy.....

It was. Saphira, stolen as an egg from Galbatorix, who destroyed the
former Dragon Riders. She chose Eragon, a farmer, to be her Rider, and
together they go off to see if they can find someone to train them as Rider
and Dragon. It's nice to see a story where dragons are not all evil, nor
are they stupid animals..... I don't know if it would make a good movie,
but I'd like to see it if it is.....

I've wanted to read it but I haven't found a copy in paperback at
my used book store yet.

Strange, it's something like 3 years old now..... Maybe more.....

The thing is though is that if it's popular and people choose to
keep thiner copies instead of selling them, I wont' find them at
that kind of store :) And I'm unwilling to buy books new, I just
don't have the funds. I can get 3 books used instead of 1 new.

Don't have any books signed, and not likely to get any signed either. Not

Haven't read that one. Recommend her "The Fairy Godmother" however.
Excellent take on the behind the scenes aspect of fairy tales! ^_^

Can you give the concept, without providing spoilers?

To take old fairy tales, such as Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty,
and rewrite them as novels of fiction with complicated plots. For
example, and trying NOT to spoil, the Cinderella tale has Ella
taken over by an Earth Mage, her stepmother. Ella, a Fire Mage,
must work with another Earth Mage, her Godmother, and Prince
Charming, an Air Mage and a shell-shocked vet of WWI, to escape
and stop the Stepmother's evil plans.

Read any good ones lately? I recently read Mercedes Lackey's "Fire and
Ash" and while she has a demoralizing tendency to over-explain, I found
it a refreshing rewrite of the classic Cinderella story.

most recent ive finished is Dragon Moon by Alan F Troop.. though
currently halfway through The Hidden Dragon by Irene Radford.. has a
rather lack of dragons unfortunatly,, and been too busy to read it anyway...

What is it about, if it has no dragons?

hard to explaine really.. the book belongs to one of the many series she
has written about the same world. a world in which magic exists cause of
the dragons that live there and in the 'Nimbus' (think of something like
the astral plane). that particular book belongs in the 'Stargods"
series, mainly following 3 brothers who crashlanded their spaceship
(based far in the future) on a planet populated with primitive humans. A
dragon did appear briefly in chapter 1, but thats been it...
something along those lines...

I think so, but I did read all 6 of the other books. I didn't read them so
much for the dragons, but to finish off the story. For the Stargods I'm
actually reading it for them. I want to know the history of the planet.

Any of these stand out in particular?

Host of Dragons was in Alan F. Troop's style. Peter again takes on an
impossible challenge against others of his own kind.

The Dragoncharm series was dark (as I've mentioned a while back in various
other threads). Of several thousand dragons--upwards of 10,000 at the book's
beginning--only 25 of them live to the end of book three, 10 of them are
unnamed. In contrast ~33 named dragons die. Oh, and they are all sterile by
the end too. Also, if you end up liking Tallow, don't read Dragonflame.

Eldest I thought was good. It's been a while since I read it.

The Stone trilogy is interesting in it's own right. Presents a rather
remarkable view of Time (including Time Travel). The Basiliks from
Dragonstorm (Ocher is seen in Dragoncharm) created a monument to Memory. A
giant stone wall impervious to nearly everything. Buried within are black
rods, that when touched kill most beings. A few beings--like Archan and the
main character Johna--can survive and view the memories or even change them.
These rods are the recording of the life of a creature somewhere and some when
on Earth (their location inside the wall has no apparent order other than
Upstone or Downstone). Downstone (Jonah's "west," "left" when facing the
wall) is backwards in time, Upstone ("east" or "right") is forward in time.
Up, down, in, and out are the other four directions (everything that lives in
the world of Stone lives on the side of the wall, a nearly vertical face). In
Dragoncharm series, when the world is remade anew history was erased and
rewritten to suit the power of Nature instead of Charm. Stone does not record
that new history, it recorded what really occurred--The Turning, the dragons,
everything.
I can't say much more without giving away key details.

Actually, I read all of them last year, but thanks anyway. Quite interesing

As long as it has a good plot and the rest, I don't mind.I'm currently in
the process of writing a story (one I hope to *someday* get published) where
the main character's family is all taken out in a rather horriffic viking
raid in the second chapter. I don't go into too much detail though... Who is

Oh, and killed by Viking raid is oh....a 2 on the scale of horror. The stuff
that happens in Dragoncharm (and sequels) rates up around a 8 or 9. And in
detail. Good rape scene in book 2. And of technically of a hatchling too.

particularly shun details like that if they are in relation to the story,

particularly shun details like that if they are in relation to the story,
not just smut. And the horror... well, I must chase it up!

Oh, it's most definitely necessary. Without the act, a very important
character in Dragonflame wouldn't exist. And it isn't that detailed, but
certainly much more so than anything else of similar and equal emotional
value.

Dragoncharm is realtively easy to find. Dragonflame is a bit more
harder.. and Dragonstorm..... well, took me a good couple months to

can still be bought new at Amazon.com (and they don't even have a listing for

Oh, of that I have no doubt. Just haven't gotten around to reading the second
book and I need to *acquire* the third. No one on the entire planet has one
they are willing to sell. Found on on Amazon.co.uk for the equivalent of US
$15 before shipping though. It's gone now and there's no way I'm paying that
much for it.

i find the hardbacks too big and clunky... course i also have a dislike
to the size of my newley obtained paperback Eragon as it is about 1.5
times bigger than the normal paperback dimentions.. which means it
doenst fit well on my bookshelf i made specifically for paperback sized
books....

Robin Hobb has some interesting work involving dragons. In the Farseer
trilogy, the whole story sort of built up to a dragon theme. An interesting
approach, I must say. Mainly focused on dragons in the third book,
Assassin's Quest, but the others, Assassin's Apprentace and Royal Assassin,
are still worth a read. Bit of death there, too, if you haven't noticed...
And lo and behold, while on holidays I was cruising a used book store, and
found another trilogy sort of picking up where the others left off by the
same author. And while this is a bit off topic, I also read a good book from
the author who wrote the Dragons of Pern series (Anne Macaffery I think?).
It is called The Rowan. Anyone heard of it? Oh, an interesting book I recall
reading a few years ago was titled Dragon's Tear by Sue Lawson. Aimed
probably for younger readers, but still has a good (and slightly sad)
storyline. There is also Dragonfang and Dragonlinks by Paul Collins, but I
dont think they actaully have much to do with dragons.

I have. It's one of her better works.

Yes. Quite interesting. I wasn't expecting this style of writing from her,
so it was a good (and surprising) change of pace for a fantasy junkie like

Ohh... thankies! I also found something interesting on Wikki. A list (that
could be greatly expanded upon, mind you) of some 'interesing' fantasy
books. They also come under other topics and there might be one for dragons,

Read any good ones lately?

Unfortunately, I don't read as much as I would like, so this is over the
past few months (whereas at one point I'd consume at least this much per
week).

Dragon-related:
Dragonstorm by Graham Edwards -- I stopped reading this in the middle and
haven't had the will to pick it up again. Not that it's bad--rather the
opposite; I care about the characters a lot, so reading it gets me rather
wrought up.

Nonfiction (curiously, I don't read much non-dragon-related fiction
anymore...):
The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis -- Believe it or not, I have not read
the Chronicles of Narnia (nor seen the recent movie), but I own and have
read probably about 95% of the rest of Lewis's books. This is one of his
religious essays; overall decent, although some parts were more
convincing than others.

Beyond Fear by Bruce Schneier -- Halfway through this; reading when I get
time. Recommended pretty strongly so far. Schneier is a noted expert in
computer security; the tagline of the book is "Thinking Sensibly about
Security in an Uncertain World." Essentially, it's a book about just
that--how to think about security (not just computer security: personal
security, home security, any type of security...it's aimed at a non-
technical audience), especially in the context of many recent security-
related initiatives (TSA, DHS, RFID passports, electronic voting...).
