Swedish Church to Join Stockholm Gay Pride Parade

The Swedish Lutheran Church will march for for the first time in the
Gay Pride parade in Stockholm under the slogan "Love is stronger that
everything", the Church announced on Thursday.

"For the first time ever, the parade at the Pride festival will have a
delegation from the Swedish Church," it said in a statement.

The parade will go through the streets of the Swedish capital on
Saturday.

The Church said the delegation would include about 30 people including
two deans from the Stockholm and Uppsala cathedrals.

It said it also wanted to "break the masses' big silence" regarding
gays, bisexuals and transexuals.

"The Swedish Church is a Church open to everyone," Uppsala priest Ann-
Katrin Bosbach explained.

Sweden, already a pioneer in giving same-sex couples the right to
adopt children, looks set to allow gays to marry in the Lutheran
Church by introducing a new marriage law in January 2008.

If the so-called "gender neutral" marriage legislation is adopted, the
Scandinavian country would become the first in the world to allow gays
to marry within a major Church.

Stockholm Pride is Scandinavia's largest Gay Pride celebration and
last year 45,000 persons participated, according to its organizers.

Homosexuality was not legalized in Sweden until 1944.

I did not know they still had any.

Last time I visited Sweden the tour guide conned me into
a local church by promising there would be a free organ
recital (I like organ music). We just happened to arrive at the
church on our tour of Visby just at the right time.

Once in they closed the door and posted a guard. Captive
audience suitably hushed a priest mounted the rostrum
and proceeded to do what priests do. I walked out (quietly)
and got a very dirty look from the guard.

My wife stayed (she is a Christian) and the organ recital
turned out to be just one piece at the end of the ritual.
I sat outside that gloomy building and enjoyed the warm
sunshine in the fresh air.

situation has been allowed to continue as long as 2007.

I suppose governments in some countries give religious organisations
some handouts (justified on some sort of 'social development' basis I
suppose, for their soup kitchens, etc.) but presumably they give it to
all denominations that meet the funding criteria. It's rather
surprising to find that a western democracy is funding one particular
denomination in such an overt way.

Formally, it's a fee for to cover the costs of cemeteries and expenses
for funerals, It is handled by the used-to-be-state church, and they
are somewhat responsible for the funerals of all religions. For the
money you get a burial plot for some (25?) years, a place to perform
whatever ceremony you prefer, cremation if you want it, and some other
stuff.

If you want a religious funeral ceremony, you need to be a member of
some congregation that handles the religious parts.

Things changed a bit when the church/state separation happened.
Nowadays any religion can ask the state to handle their membership fee
collecting, and the money will be taken from the paycheck when they
take the taxes. Before that time the state only handled the money for
the official state church. You could get rid of most of the tax by
leaving the state church, and nobody had any right to ask why you left
it, many people left because they wanted to be members of another
christian church.

Somewhat surprisingly, a number of members of the ex state church are
atheists. They usually motivates it with "it's tradition".

Oh, yes, I left the church at about the same time I started to pay
taxes. :-) I became a member automatically at birth.
