Hollywood icon Peter Fonda is easy riding into the sunset -- the veteran actor died Friday ... TMZ has learned.

A rep for Peter confirms he passed Friday morning at his his home in Los Angeles, and was surrounded by family. We're told the official cause of death was respiratory failure due to lung cancer -- and he had been in and out of the hospital recently.

Peter, is Jane Fonda's brother and the son of Henry Fonda. The family released a statement, saying, "In one of the saddest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our hearts."

They added, "While we mourn the loss of this sweet and gracious man, we also wish for all to celebrate his indomitable spirit and and love of life."

Peter's most famous for his iconic role in the 1969 counterculture classic, "Easy Rider" ... which he co-wrote and produced. He also costarred with Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson.

The 50th anniversary of the film just past on July 14th, and Peter was planning a concert and screening for September to celebrate.

He got an Oscar nominatiion for writing "Easy Rider." He was also nominated for Best Actor for his role as a beekeeper in "Ulee's Gold" in 1997.

Most recently, Peter won a Golden Globe in 2000 for "The Passion of Ayn Rand."

He was married 3 times. His most-recent wife was Margaret DeVogelaere.

Our photogs last saw Peter in June 2018, and he was fired up about President Trump's administration. He was celebrating the fact Paul Manafort was going to prison.

Peter was 79.

Decades ago, I was watching a movie on TV where two men were driving and
they saw a woman in another car. One of them (the passenger) decided to
impersonate a state trooper by putting on a cowboy hat and sunglasses and
ordered her to pull over, which she did. He then did bad things to her.
That's about all I remember, except I think the cop impersonator was Peter
Fonda. Anyone know the movie?

It's a shame so many people don't attach importance to any of his work
beyond "Easy Rider." Must have been very frustrating for him.

It's a shame so many people don't attach importance to any of his work

Or they just wanted to cast him in counterculteral roles, or playing aging hippie types as in "Escape from LA".

It's sad, but I generally have limited sympathy for people who die of lung cancer.

Comedian/comic actor Andy Kaufman died of lung cancer and he never -- so he claimed -- smoked a cigarette in his life. Might've have been all the second-hand smoke from all the 1970s comedy clubs e played.

It's ironic that a 1960s counter-cultural icon such as Peter Fonda would die during the 50th anniversary of Woodstock.

As for the big cancelled Woodstock 50 event: "We blew it.'

He also had an interesting "won't eat" list, but all these years later, I can't recall what was on it. I'm pretty sure meat was one.

Wow, I finally get it! That 1970s E-Z Wider rolling papers brand was a spin on the title of that hippie movie "Easy Rider."

How did they market it in the UK? Britons might have seen the name and thought "E-Zed Wider."

Of course, Morgan Freeman's hipster character "Easy Reader" from "The Electric Company" was, also, a similar spin ... but I got that one right away back in the day.

In the summer of 1965, Fonda showed up at a Beatles house party on Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Some of the guests (including the Beatles) were dropping acid, and Fonda, who later said he was high on LSD when he arrived, remembered that he tried to calm down guitarist George Harrison who thought he was dying.

“I told him there was nothing to be afraid of and that all he needed to do was relax,” Fonda said. “I said that I knew what it was like to be dead because when I was 10 years old, I’d accidentally shot myself in the stomach and my heart stopped beating three times while I was on the operating table because I’d lost so much blood."

Fonda said John Lennon overhead him say “I know what it’s like to be dead.”

"He looked at me and said, ‘You’re making me feel like I’ve never been born. Who put all that sh-- in your head?’" Fonda recalled, according to The Times.

Lennon later said that Fonda kept coming up to him and repeating the line.

I've read where about 15 percent of those who get lung cancer are non-smokers. How many of them got it from second-hand smoke, I don't know. Some got it from working around asbestos or other cancer causing materials. IIRC Donna Summer died of lung cancer and she believed it was due to her living near ground zero during 9/11.
