I was riding to an appointment today for work in a mood which was
maybe...fair to whatever is a notch above poor. Then a great song came
on. Blue Sky (live) by the Allman Brothers. I was wondering what other
songs have that effect on people. I have lots but this one caught me
good today, so what song(s) get you beamin' RGP ?

Ah, good one.
I was representing a new insurance company client and my claims manager was
named Elise. The first time I spoke to her on the phone, I had misread her
name and called her Elsie. She was not amused.

I played the piano for many years and had a copy of the sheet music for Fur
Elise and sent her a copy with my apologies. It worked. We became very
good friends.

Good Things by the BoDeans never fails to cheer me up (and it's not even my
favorite BoDeans song, but that opening sequence has a damn near Pavlovian
effect on me)

Don't fence me in, Gene Autry
I'm so lonesome I could cry, Hank Williams
Satisfaction, Rolling Stones
Johnny B. Goode, Chuck Berry
I feel like I'm fixing to die rag, Country Joe and the Fish.

Those songs all spoke to me at various points in my life, and still do.  So they

I only feel normal when I'm severely depressed.  Feeling normal puts me in a
good mood.  Being happy just seems so artificial, almost inhuman.

I've been on a few cruises and at night while in the dancing bars there is
one
song played that always gets 99% of the people up to dance. I get blown
away
how people are effected when they hear this song. It has a mesmerizing
effect.

And that song is: Sweet Home Alabama.

If you want to get everybody off their ass, play that song. Hmm, maybe
they should
play Sweet Home Alabama in slave factories to keep them on their feet.

Me too ; Kodachrome is quite catchy as well. And another
good thing about these old things is that they aren't quite
as challenging to play on the guitar as some of the more
modern stuff :)

Break Stuff

It's just one of those days
When ya don't wanna wake up
Everything is fucked, everybody sucks.
You don't really know why
But you wanna justify rippin' someone's head off
No human contact
And if you interact your life is on contract
Your best bet is to stay away mother fucker!
It's just one of those days!

It's all about the he says she says bullshit
I think you better quit lettin' shit slip
Or you'll be leavin with a fat lip
It's all about the he says she says bullshit
I think you better quit talkin' that shit

It's just one of those days
Feelin' like a freight train
First one to complain
Leaves with a blood stain
Damn right I'm a maniac
You better watch your back
Cuz I'm fuckin' up your program
And if you're stuck up
You just lucked up
Next in line to get fucked up
Your best bet is to stay away motherfucker!
It's just one of those days!

It's all about the he says she says bullshit.
I think you better quit lettin shit slip
Or you'll be leavin with a fat lip
It's all about the he says she says bullshit
I think you better quit talkin that shit, punk
So come and get it

I feel like shit
My suggestion is to keep your distance
Cuz right now I'm dangerous
We've all felt like shit
And been treated like shit
All those motherfuckers, that want to step up

I hope ya know
I pack a chainsaw
I'll skin your ass raw
And if my day keeps going this way
I just might break something tonight

I pack a chainsaw
I'll skin your ass raw
And if my day keeps going this way
I just might break something tonight

I pack a chainsaw
I'll skin your ass raw
And if my day keeps going this way
I just might break your fuckin' face tonight

Give me something to break
Give me somthing to break
Just give me stuff to break
How 'bout your fuckin' face?

I hope you know I pack a chainsaw, what? A chainsaw, what?, a
mutherfuckin' chainsaw, what?
So come and get it

It's all about the he says she says bullshit.
I think you better quit lettin shit slip
Or you'll be leavin with a fat lip
It's all about the he says she says bullshit

My "road song" is "Amarillo by Morning" by George Strait, written by
Terry Stafford. I don't listen to much else by Strait, although I
don't turn the radio off when he comes on. I don't know that it puts
me in a good mood and I don't know that I want a song to do that.

There are a great many other songs tied for first place. Off the top
of my head:

"Ripple" by the Greatful Dead, Robert Hunter
"Night Life" written by Willy Nelson. Aretha probably did it best
"Picture" by Kid Rock and Cheryl Crow
"I'd Rather Go Blind" by Etta James
"I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by Hank Williams
"Lake Charles" by Lucinda Williams
"Little Wing" by Hendrix or the version on Layla by Derek and the
Dominos
"Love Has No Pride" Bonnie Raitt. I wonder did Katz know he was
writing a country song.
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones
"The Thrill is Gone" by B.B. King
"I'll Play the Blues for You" by Albert King
"Hyperdrive" by Grace Slick and Paul Kantner
"Smooth Operator" by Sade
"A Case of You" by Joni Mitchell

and a hundred others.

You think so and I think different but that's what make horseraces.
The musicians who are eager to perform with her are numerous and their
opinions count for something. But they might be drawn by her
songwriting, so ?quien sabe? And maybe it just comes down to that you
don't know.

"Lake Charles" by Lucinda Williams
I don't know, Will ... an awful lot like fingernails on a chalkboard.
You think so and I think different but that's what make horseraces.
The musicians who are eager to perform with her are numerous and their
opinions count for something. But they might be drawn by her
songwriting, so ?quien sabe? And maybe it just comes down to that you
don't know.
You may have this last correct, Will.

However, for those who don't know what we are talking about:

I think this cover is a bit better:

That is also possible.

I feel I am quite a connoisseur of bread pudding ... both the Palace (on
Canal) and Commander's have excellent examples even though they are quite
different ... and Voyagers at Perdido Bay ... ... and I really like a lot of
different cole slaws and guacamole.

But I really think that folks make a little too much fuss about their beer
and wine and single malts. I don't care for Ouzo no matter who makes it and
Metaxa is just not that great. There are many other things that folks have
an eye or a taste or an ear for that I do not find pleasant.

Lucinda Williams just does not have a voice that I find attractive. If
there is a deep message in her lyrics for "Lake Charles," it has passed me
by. Some "art" is difficult for some of us that are unsophisticated to
understand.

Stop the humble stuff. You were the only one that I saw to take a shot
at someone else's favorite songs. You want to argue music, I will
argue with you. You want to back down, feel free. She's a great
songwriter and musician. Her voice isn't to everyone's taste but the
exact same things could be said for Bob Dylan, except that she can't
possibly play harmonica as badly as Dylan. It is possible that no one
ever has.

I like Dylan. Maybe it is a timing thing. I am not sure I ever understood
any of his lyrics, but at the time, that didn't matter.

I did not mean my comment to be a "shot" at your favorite song. I have
visited Lake Charles many, many times. I am sure that has prejudiced me
against anything that implies that such a place would be honored in a song.
Probably that is what happened.

Listen to her album Essence and if not the whole thing then "Blue" I
think you will see her differntly.

I really like Car Wheels, don't get me wrong, but Essence is much better
IMHO

Go find a jukebox
And see what a quarter will do
I don't wanna talk
I just wanna go back to blue

Feeds me when I'm hungry
And quenches my thirst
Loves me when I'm lonely
And thinks of me first

Blue is the color of night
When the red sun disappears from the sky

Raven feathers shiny and black
A touch of blue glistening down her back

We don't talk about heaven
And we don't talk about hell
We've come to depend on
One another so damn well

So go to confession
Whatever gets you through
You can count your blessings
I'll just count on blue

I don't know, Will. I just don't find this inspiring. I am trying to find
"meaning" in her lyrics. I admit to not having an ear for her voice.

I think this version of Blue has a lot more going for it.

Not sure, but I have, for the most part, been a fan of Brews, but for

enough money right now to buy premium beer (which I would prefer) and

How about Murphys Red, Guiness Stout and Draught, Killians, All sorts
of local microbrews, Lowenbrau? Unfortunately these are more
expensive then the cheap beers. I would prefer these beers anyday,
but when i drink beer it is because I am sick of liquor and when i can
buy a fifth of Bacardi for 12.00 and have it last 3 or 4 'sessions' of
drinking and I get sick of it and want beer I look at the better beers
and see 20.00 for a good 12 pack and that will only last me 1 drinking
'session' and I see Miller lite right there and 14.00 for a case that
will last 3 drinking sessions I look at the Miller lite and figure
after about 7 I am not going to care if its killians or Miller Lite
anyway so why bother.

Maybe one (not won) day i will be able to drop 20-30 on beer and not
care, but unfortunately right now I cannot do that. I am a beer guy,
but beer is expensive.

Newcastle and Pauli Girl are very good as well IMO, but they are also
expensive.

I generally drink Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, which, IMO, is a perfect beer.
I can generally get a 12 pack for about 12 bucks here, which is acceptable
for me. I have a ton of saved Belgian beers (I mean, like, 100 cases or
more of different beers) so I drink those when I want something special.
Yeah, I've spent a lot of money on beer in the past. I think I have some
Westvleteren 12's that are over 10 years old now.

Have to agree with pickel that he was one hell of a storyteller.  "Corey's

reason I got into the habit of singing the song to myself when running during my

love "Roses are Red".

As far as the Allman Brothers, the song "Jessica" is a real goodie.
Marshall Tucker Band "Take the Highway" "Can't You See"
Jimi Hendrix "Still Raining, Still Dreaming" "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)"
Jefferson Airplane "Lather"
Led Zeppelin "In My Time of Dying" (sounds morbid, but I like that song a lot)
Robin Trower "Day of the Eagle"  "Too Rolling Stoned"
John Lee Hooker "Never Get out of These Blues Alive"
Muddy Waters "Mannish Boy"
Johnny Winter "All Tore Down" "Still Alive and Well"
Oingo Boingo "Grey Matter"
X "Nausea" "Los Angeles"
B-52s "Rock Lobster"
The Police "Invisible Sun"

As for jazz, I really like Miles Davis.
Classical music I like Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms and others depending on what
mood I'm in.

Good Times, Bad Times by Zep. And Dancing Days while we're at it.

Someone else mentioned Paul Simon. How about Mother and Child Reunion?

Also "Up On Cripple Creek" by The Band. And Sultans of Swing by Dire
Straits.

There's a station here in Reno that plays Mark Knopfler solo stuff.
Any of that pumps me up.

I can take or leave that one, even though I'll happily listen to most
anything by Paul Simon. I always grin when I hear that song, though.

I read somewhere that Simon and McCartney had an unspoken songwriting
rivalry some years ago. Apparently, McCartney was determined to write
a song as good as "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (I believe I read it in
John Lennon's Playboy interview just before he was killed) and came up
with (I think it was this one)"Hey Jude". Anyway, the reason "Mother
and Child Reunion" makes me smile is because of Simon's line, "...I
know they say let it be, but it just don't work out that way." I've
always taken that as a jab at McCartney.
