Post by Ed RhodesPost by Justin TymeIn fact, they are just getting started. Justin
Trump is going to go down in history as either the first President
to be impeached TWICE. OR, he's going to go down as the first
President to face the 45th Amendment.
45th? I presume you mean 25th and made a typo.
Yes, 25th. Hit the wrong buttons!
I figured.
Post by Ed RhodesPost by KWillsNeither will happen. He has less than two weeks in office.
There wouldn't be enough time to pass the Articles of Impeachment, let
alone set up a trial date.
Pence is getting POed at Trump (finally), but will do
nothing. Not with 11 days until Biden takes the Oath of Office.
They want a streamlined case set up for Monday! They want him
impeached! (I would have rather gone for the 25th. Quicker, but it
involves Pence and the Cabinet... most of which have resigned!)
It's pointless. Trump has just over a week left in office.
One, no matter how short, removing him from office would send a signal
that this kind of nonsense will not be tolerated.
Sure, but it would cost far more money than it's worth. And we'll
have the same outcome as last time. Republicans still hold the Senate.
The elections are over, so they either have their seats assured, or
they will be replaced when the houses convene again. They don't have
to worry about offending constituents.
Post by Ed RhodesTwo, as I understand it, impeachment removes his pension. (Major
reason why Nixon resigned.)
If so, there's no motivation now. He was already impeached once.
I don't know where you got the idea that his pension would be
removed because he is impeached. If convicted and removed from office,
yes. But not just for being impeached.
Yes. Removal is part of the deal to stop his pension. Sorry, I wasn't
more clear on that. However, it's looking more and more like THIS
impeachment isn't going to be blocked by 52 spineless Republicans.
After conviction, he will lose his pension and other perks of
being President.
Post by Ed RhodesPost by KWillsPost by Ed RhodesHe'd be stuck with whatever money he can gouge out
of the taxpayers to pay his Secret Service detail for room and meals
at Mar-Largo! IF he's not spending time at Club FED!
I expect him to spend some time at a zero star resort in New York
State.
That was my joke about Club FED. Got it from "The Mask."
But... The State of New York doesn't have a "Club FED." It's a
state facility :)
I'll see myself out...
Post by Ed RhodesAlso, I'm told, if convicted, he just might lose the Secret Service
detail. In that case, there'd be nobody to soak the taxpayers for club
fees and meals.
Under 3 U.S.C. 102, a former President is entitled to
A monthly pension for life at the rate "of the head of an executive
department."
An office staff, with an aggregate salary up to $96,000 per year.
Office space appropriately furnished and equipped.
The President's widow receives a $20,000 annual pension if he precedes
her in death.
Up to $1,000,000 per year for "security and travel related expenses."
This covers secret service protection.
These, and some others, apply only for those
"...whose service in such office shall have terminated other than by
removal pursuant to section 4 of article II of the Constitution of the
United States of America."
(To save time, section 4 of article II states: The President, Vice
President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be
removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason,
Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.)
The key words are "other than by removal." If Trump is convicted
and removed, he loses it all.
While I don't see a conviction as realistic, it's not impossible.
He might want to resign and hope Pence grants him a pardon. It's been
done before when Nixon resigned and Ford pardoned him. But as upset as
Pence appears to be, a pardon isn't assured.
