It's about time. I got tired of having to get rid of Calibri and Cambria
every time it did something automatically.

Calibri seems to have led a fairly exciting life, for a font:

'Calibri ... released to the general public in 2007, with Microsoft Office
2007 and Windows Vista.[2][3]'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calibri#In_crime_and_politics

'Because of Calibri's position as the default font in Office, many cases
have been reported in which documents were shown to be forged thanks
to a purported creation date before Calibri was available to the general
public.[2][26][27][28][29]

'In 2017, the font came to public attention as evidence in the Pakistani
government-related "Panama Papers" case (also known as Fontgate),[30]
in which a document supposedly signed in February 2006 was found
to be typed up in Calibri.[31][32][33][34] De Groot said that there was
"really zero chance" that the document was genuine.[12] '

That's a shame, the meh of Calibri always seemed to me appropriate for
Microsoft Office which is a very meh product.

But then again, I detest the modern ethos of using sand-serif fonts for
body text.

And Calibri would be much less 'meh' if it weren't associated with Word.

Agreed,
The tiny bits of Arabic that appear in some of his sample lines show
that he has absolutely no feel whatsoever for Arabic writing, and on
the whole Calibri appears to be depressingly typical of his work.

There's even a phony imitation of Zapf's Optima, one of the great
looks of the 1970s, near the top of the array.

I disagree, it is inherently meh.

Which is not relevant to discussing one particular font. I believe I
remember a quote from him about it being "slap dash" and that even he did
not like it much (or use it, perhaps).

Mine, for example. I don't think I have any M$ garbage lying around.
When someone sends me a Word file that I need to open I open it with
Pages -- which isn't perfect either, but it's not as bad as Word, and
can open Word files that Word can't open.

Do tell us what's wrong with MSWord. Except for mathematical formulae,
which were never a part of its brief, what do you think you can do in TeX
or LaTeX that I can't do more easily in Word?

It's a Microsoft product, to which some people are allergic.

Seems a tad irrational. My subsequent sentence was relevant.

I have an acquaintance (I won't say friend) who is seriously opposed to
anything from Microsoft (and Google) - but then he used to support George

AIUI Calibri is part of MS Office. You will only have that font, and the
other MS Office fonts, if you have MS Office. Mac or Windows doesn't
change that.

I don't have MS Office. I use OpenOffice Writer, and Calibri is one

when I add text to an image in Adobe Photoshop.

I'm on Windows.
