RTL and N-TV have unscrambled F1 this year

With no live Channel 4 except 1 race, RTL and N-TV have unscrambled F1 again this year if you have a dish

(but typically the synch is out again if you then bring up a Sky multiscreen on a portable TV set - so the RTL etc main picture will be about 3 seconds ahead of the Sky commentary)

RTL show qualifying and the race live, and N-TV shows the 2nd practice session live and sometimes the 1st one too. (RTL shows the 3rd practice session but not live but just before its live qualifying)

both RTL and N-TV have adbreaks though - but useful if you don't have Sky F1 (use a radio for English commentary) or want to see more action than just the main picture or to glance at a Sky multiscreen for a bit when the main picture cuts away from the race to show Naomi Campbell in the pits etc

I was told about a thing called "Kayo" which they say is cheaper than Sky or Foxtel. It's apparently similar to FoxtelNow or NowTV, I don't know if it's available in the UK.

Simpler but £600/year is not small beans and F1 is not what it used to
be.

Far cheaper is a now tv season pass for £195 but you can't record as
far as I know. £10 per weekend with F2 and GP3 if you like watching
some actual racing ;)

Cheaper still Sky GO £5/month.

Okay, I accept that there are cheaper (legitimate) ways of getting
coverage (I got a Sky F1 package cheaply years ago as an incentive to
take HD) but my point was that many people seem to imagine that they
should be able to get everything free and, if they can't, are prepared
to use illicit means to do so. Good F1 coverage, like good journalism,
costs money.

So you didn't really mean "simpler"... or meant wouldn't it be simpler
to be legitimate?

I kinda disagree with your use of your last sentence as it is not the
coverage that costs the horrendous amount of money; it is the rights to
show the coverage.

I think there is far too much money in the sport, in many sports and
in film and music too. If chopping the F1 budgets in 4 meant cheaper
rights and more acceptable pricing I would be all for it. As for UK
pricing it is well above that in many other countries. If Sky hadn't
bought the rights we might be offered F1 at much nearer the $100/ year
that the yanks and other European countries have to pay... at that
price I think a lot more people would find watching F1 "simpler".

Anything to discourage Sky's greed is okay with me.

I know Now tv was mentioned a while ago - but, if you are like me!!
you may not be aware that you can watch Qually & Race live via Now tv
without any additional charges. Assuming you have an Entertainment pass
you can watch Sky One at any time and most of the Saturday & Sunday
Sky Sports F1 programs are also shown on Sky One live. There is no
way of recording the stream and I haven't found a way of pausing
live coverage, though I've seen claims that you can.

If you don't have Now tv already and might consider it, be aware
that it's a subsidiary of Sky, and is only available in the UK,
Ireland & Italy. However, you can buy a Smart Stick from Argos
for £15.99, which plugs into an HDMI socket, and you get a 2 month
Entertainment pass with no extra charge. For that £15.99 you
could watch the next five GPs. After that the pass is £7.99 per
month, so for ~£62 you could watch the rest of the season.

Smart Sticks also available from Amazon, though they are £25
so Argos is cheaper.

£3.19 to put a hole through my wall and I've got RTL back again.

I'd had to move the TV that has a satellite input into a different room and not got round to moving the cable for the last couple of years.

Despite a very rusted dish and a LNB unused for about 3 years, got RTL back up and running in about 10 minutes on Saturday, so sorted out a 400mm drill bit to get the cables through the brick wall and I'm back in business!

A SKY subscription is (probably) splendid value for money, but it's not a whole lot of good if one tends to travel for most of the year. Travelling seems to make following F1 race weekends close to impossible. Somewhat ironic for an international sports series.

I do have sky f1 etc but use rtl to put a multiscreen on a second TV set - the main picture cuts away to the pits etc too often and doesn't show enough action from further down the field.

also of course people on low incomes might not be able to afford sky f1 so rtl etc is a better option for them.

Watching RTL unscrambled is funded by the advertising on that channel, which you'd have to presume includes some expectation of out of country viewers.
