The best 2 player fighting game on the Commodore 64: "Barbarian" - a
bloody mess in the melee of lopping heads off and blood everywhere as
the slain opponent drops to his knees with a fountain of blood from
the severed neck...

...the highly successful predecessor to "Barbarian" was the Kung Fu
game "The Way Of The Exploding Fist" - awesome. Another fighting game
was "Karate Devils" ..... not as great.

The greatest SF adventure / strategy action game on Commodore 64 and
ZX Spectrum: "Elite" - you could even trade illicit drugs and weapons
and go to planets with Anarchy or Feudal systems. I remember i cheated
and had a docking computer and shields and extra lasers from the very
start..... bought a warp drive and went to other galaxies for the drug
money.......

early C64/Vic 20 game with very creepy music: Forbidden Forest....

other C64 great games we played alot: "Beach Head", "Blue Max", "Aztec
Challenge" (very gory and twisted), "Cauldron" (with the bouncing
pumpkin). I also had "Tubular Bells" pixel psychedelic thing. I
remember Tony Crowther was a famous composer of many games...

...another great Commodore 64 game was the one in a city where you run
around with a green mohawk mugging old ladies and beat up blind people
wandering around with canes.... can't remember the name of it.

Some more great games were: Knuckleduster, Frank Bruno's Boxing, Ankh,
The Staff Of Karnath (super creepy music), Manic Miner (watch out for
the poison plants!), Prodigy, Doppleganger... and the ultra-gory
Nemesis The Warlock and Judge Dredd games.

Not to mention all those Infocom box set adventure text games (the
classic Zork trilogy, Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Cutthroats to
name a few). ...

I still have all that shit in boxes, but no working cassette deck.

but i do have a working floppy drive and about 500 disks full of
pirate games.
more:

Very worthy licensed games on the Commodore 64 we could play all night
like psychopaths: "G.I. Joe" and "Ghostbusters". Also worthy was
"Transformers" which i had on cassette. Also i had the ultra violent
arcade game "Wizard of Wor" on cartridge. Odd game made by hackers:
"Dirty Little Boy" - all it was just a naked baby who jerked off and
came all over and then "game over". LOL.

Another great Commodore 64 game i forgot: the awesome "Attack Of The
Mutant Camels" programmed by some hairy kaftan hippie in UK who only
listened to Metallica according to superstar interviews. Worthy VERY
fun text games were "Crystals Of Carus" and "The Quest For The Golden
Eggcup".

There was this strange game that my buddy had on his Amiga - involving
a blue polar bear jumping around on icebergs and avoiding Eskimos and
the edge of the scrolling screen.

If you died, it would pop up "SLUT" in big letters.

No idea. We laughed like little boys at it though.

I had that. "SLUT" means "END" in Danish.

Other 2 great games were Commando and Rambo - both were almost
identical. The games caused controversy for the violent content.

a real bizarre racing game was "Rally Speedway" where when you crashed
the driver ran out on fire waving his arms!

no. But one memorable early Vic 20 / C64 game was "Lode Runner" - a
helicopter resque game with little funny guys running around and you
had to pick them up and fly back to base. Of course crashing the
chopper when rescuing people or landing was bad!

no. But one memorable early Vic 20 / C64 game was "Lode Runner" - a
helicopter resque game with little funny guys running around and you
had to pick them up and fly back to base. Of course crashing the
chopper when rescuing people or landing was bad!
AB
LR never had a helicopter in it ?  The game you described sounds like
Choplifter to me.
yeah! i mixed up those little white dudes running around...... same
software house i think?

Very worthy licensed games on the Commodore 64 we could play all night
like psychopaths: "G.I. Joe" and "Ghostbusters". Also worthy was
"Transformers" which i had on cassette. Also i had the ultra violent
"Dirty Little Boy" - all it was just a naked baby who jerked off and
came all over and then "game over". LOL.
--
Having fun, down on Airstrip One.
I had that. "SLUT" means "END" in Danish.
The more you know...

This was it. Though I don't remember the version I played having
English speech samples (more like Pingu voices).

Post by Alisdair Battlegrave (Dawnrazor)
Other 2 great games were Commando and Rambo - both were almost
identical. The games caused controversy for the violent content.
I had Rambo II.

Never could figure out what I was supposed to do. Just ended up
wandering around in the jungle for two hours and blowing up trees.

The best 2 player fighting game on the Commodore 64: "Barbarian" - a
bloody mess in the melee of lopping heads off and blood everywhere as
the slain opponent drops to his knees with a fountain of blood from
the severed neck...
My buddy and I used spend hours playing that on his Amstrad, with a
greenscreen monitor.

(didn't some of those things emit x-rays?)

Me, I had a Spectrum +2A.

The first Street Fighter game was awesome. Though, I bet if I looked
up an LP for it on Youtube now, it would look really crappy.

Hmm.

Actually not...

Used to get into loads of arguments with my nan after I'd been playing
that for 5 hours straight when I had school the next day. I don't
think that I ever actually got past the last guy (he could KO you with
2 hits).

I used to have Street Fighter on the C64. the 16 color palette made it
better than the Spectrum version i just saw on YouTube. I had a friend
named Trygve who had an Amstrad and later an Amiga - he is now a
programmer, and succesfull at that. I used to pirate games from many
hackers or friends - one hacker i know, Mr. Nop - I was at his house
lots of times to copy games but I never knew his real name!!

Other great games: Summer Games, Winter Games, IO, Gauntlet (though
not as good as the arcade), Pirates!, Ivanhoe, Never Ending Story
(text game on 2 cassettes)......

There was this middle-aged single guy who lived down the road from my
friend. He was always giving him free games and pirated stuff and
letting him come over and play on his computer. Dude's house was full
of empty booze bottles and stunk of cigars.

In hindsight, that sounds a little suspect.

Did you know that Street Fighter II had been released on the Speccy? I
didn't, until today.

Also, Doom - but on the Spectrum. Heh.

other C64 great games we played alot: "Beach Head", "Blue Max", "Aztec
There was a sequel to Blue Max called Blue Max 2012 or Blue Max 2024
or something like that. In this one, the player flies a hovercraft
over a futuristic terrain. I played a lot of The Way of the Exploding
Fist. I love that reverse high kick. Do not have time for games these

you walked around in the jungle and temples. I don't play any computer
games anymore but remember the 80s fondly back when i still did!

Loved Stuntcar Racer - car race game on a rollercoaster track.

I'm trying to think of the name of a sit-down racing game I played in
the arcade as a really little kid. If you turned the wheel to the left
or right, the car would move, like left or right at a 90-degree angle,
even if you were stationary.

I used to play this loads at my local swimming pool.

Not too bad. She has her good days and bad days. Her speech is pretty

Actually, I think I have Ultimate Doom around here somewhere. Might
have to install that again.

You ever into Pokemon? I've played most of the games in the series and
found that they all have the same flaw in single player. The game just
stops being fun in the last eighth of the game or so, because the
opponents' Pokemon suddenly become that much more powerful,
necessitating literally hours of dull back and forth
'walk-fight-walk-fight-heal-walk-fight' to make your own 'mons strong
enough to beat them (as it takes longer to level up the more powerful
you become).

Did you ever have those Garbage Pail Kids cards, or was that a bit
after your schooldays?

There was also a thing for Coca-Cola (also Sprite and Fanta) yo-yos
when I was at school. If you learned a few specific tricks that were
listed in the booklet and found a ring-pull with a certain symbol
under it, you could go to some Coke road show event and demonstrate
them in order to get a gold (i.e. gold plastic) yo-yo.

Me, I got my gold one by giving someone three regular Coke yo-yos.
Then his mum rang up my nan and started shouting.

Never got into the yoyo thing. I can't really remember a "must have" toy
at all. I guess back in the seventies things were prety tight with a lot
of fathers on the dole so the peer pressure wasn't there as no one could
afford anything. Marbles were big though.

I've played Half-Life through a few times - I have done it once only
losing a few hit points (at one point you have to jump from a lift and I
couldn't find a way to avoid it). Really liked HL2 especially the start
where you don't have time to think - you're just pushed on all the time.
Also love the original Unreal Tournament with zero gravity.
Even the last boss in HL? I always found him really tricky, in terms
of getting a shot off at his brain, even when I could breeze through
the rest of the game.
I just remember playing certain sections over and over again until I
could do it. I was saving the game every few seconds at some points!
You ever take a look at some of the speedruns on YouTube? Crazy stuff.

Did you ever have those Garbage Pail Kids cards, or was that a bit
after your schooldays?
I did get a few of them, and yes I was a little too old.

As a child of the 80s, I was a little fuckwit when it came to 'must
have' toys. I sucked.
