Apple II Reference Manual (for II & II+) - 1979 + Addendum on Asimov

Hi All Apple II and II Plus Enthusiasts,

I just uploaded a new copy of [my] "Apple II Reference Manual (for II & II+) - 1979 + Addendum" to Asimov incoming:

Apple II Reference Manual (for II & II+) - 1979 + Addendum (alt JPD).zip and
Apple II Reference Manual (for II & II+) - 1979 + Addendum (alt JPD) [PAGES].zip.

[These zip files are huge! The manual & addendum are PDFs. The pages are JPEGs.]

I reworked (prettied up) the cover art, so it is not the [my] original cover. The Apple computer in the center of the cover looks a lot more like a real Apple II (on my LCD monitor), but it is not a photograph. I hope the colors are satisfactory. Colors always look slightly different on different monitors.

I also included [my] "The Addendum to the Apple II Reference Manual" (both within the manual and separately from it), but it [my copy of the addendum] is different from the other versions I found online.

The reason I scanned in my copy of the manual is so I could convert the AutoStart ROM listing in Appendix C into text. All the other versions I found online don't convert well. I will have to see if my copy will convert better than those. But, I figured that since I was removing the binding, I had better scan in the whole manual, not just the appendix desired.

Antoine Vignau's version of the AutoStart ROM is just source code and does not have the assembly address and byte code columns (that I want) and his version is a later version, 1985; but it does convert well (with CiderPress), since it is already in a textual format.

[Jorge, a diehard Apple II enthusiast (in Spain?), will probably love my manual (if he can read/translate the English to Spanish?).]

Yours truly,

James Davis

Hahaha, thanks James, probably... but I can't find it, incoming is empty and it's not in unsorted either.

ftp.apple.asimov.net/apple_II/incoming -> nothing here
ftp.apple.asimov.net/apple_II/unsorted -> not there

Can you post the exact path to fetch it?

Jorge,

Give Isaac Asimov a few days to sort it out. I just uploaded it late last night and/or very early this morning, immediately before posting the message above. It usually takes the AsimovLookerAfterer a few days to sort out the uploads.

"Isaac Asimov" must be his alias, because the last time I uploaded a 7zip file, the AsimovLookerAfterer wrote to me requesting I send zip files in future, and he signed it "Isaac Asimov" !!!

Hari Seldon was a main character in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.
He was a computer guy.
Daneel Olivaw (actually R. Daneel Olivaw) was a humanoid robot who is a
main character in several of Isaac Asimov's robot books.

Thanks Charlie,

I read everything Isaac Asimov ever wrote back in the 1960s and 70s (Science & S.F., before he died, except not textbooks), but I don't remember people's (or the character's) names well.

P.S. What is your name, again? ;-D

I remember the stories, just not the character names. I remember concepts better than I remember details. That is why I forget people's names.

Oh here comes the complete geek reference:

R Daneel Olivaw was indistinguishable from humans. He manipulated both human and robot to create a society that did not need robots.

He did have to swap out parts and upgrade body and brain over something like 20,000 years. His robotic brain became so complex that I think his final replacement brain was not electronic but rather biological.

So maybe in a Futurama twist or cross over, all of the advances and new hardware will mean that Woz's brain will become the future Apple II to replace the 65xxxx02

Yes! I forgot. David X Cohen was a big Apple II guy as a teen. He tossed in the bender 6502 reference on purpose.

. He wrote a compiler And language with some friends. I had read an article about it and perhaps that planted the Woz head in a jar thought in my head.

Frank,

My cover is too dirty. That is why I spent two weeks prettying it up for the publication/upload. You can find a better/good one here (to compare with):

ftp://public.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/documentation/hardware/machines/a2_reference_manual_alt.pdf

It is the same as my cover, but cleaner (and it has the wire hoop binding in view, which my scan doesn't have).

There is a fuzzier one at <http://www.turbo-2.com/apple> also.

P.S. There is an even fuzzier one (signed by WOZ) at:

<https://ia801707.us.archive.org/19/items/Apple_II_Reference_Manual_1979_Apple/Apple_II_Reference_Manual_1979_Apple_text.pdf>

The www.turbo-2.com version was in a file called: APPLE 2 MANUALS.zip. I can't find the source for it right now, but it most probably came from Asimov, too.

For some reason, there is another version of the Nov 1977 blue book:

The layout is different, but the content seems identical (after the DigiBarn intro).

The DigiBarn 1977 PDF version is easier to see (darker letters) and is also searchable! The Apple2history.org 1977 Bluebook PDF version is not searchable.
