Post by Sieghard WeitzelHi Marie,
You don't "need" to buy these Airpods. Yes, the 3.5mm headphone jack is
gone so you have to use the Lightning earpods that come with the phone or
the 3.5mm to Lightning adapter or of course you can use any bluetooth
earpiece or headset you already may own or you can buy an inexpensive $50
bluetooth earpiece. These are all valid options and while I agree that $160
US for the Airpods is a steep price, there are many $150 to $200 headsets
out there and given the highly advanced design of these Airpods which I
totally expect to be awesome means the price tag is not totally unjustified
compared to what else is out there. I recently bought one of the more
expensive bluetooth headsets from Plantronics which was $200 here in
Canada, I think they are around $150 in the States, so not far off what
Apple charges for their Airpods. While they sounded great they were bulky
headsets and considering the price tag the lag when using Voiceover was
horrible. They were using Bluetooth 4.0 yet the lag was probably a good
half second, about the worst I have ever experienced and I promptly
returned them for a refund since I bought them from Amazon. It appears that
the version of Bluetooth doesn't necessarily mean it's a better experience
since I have an old Bluetooth 2.1 device which has almost no lag. It will
be very interesting to see how responsive these Apple Airpods will be, if
they are awesome I'll probably buy a set despite the price tag and despite
the fact that I am not even upgrading my 6S Plus to a 7 or 7 Plus. I also
like the fact you can use either left or right by itself which is great for
walking around when you want to get GPS announcements etc. I think Apple is
very serious about making wireless a standard which is not a "I can live
with that solution" because it's not great but I don't want wires, but they
want to make it an enjoyable and high quality experience. Let's see if they
deliver, also they designed this W1 chip so this means we'll probably see a
W2, W3 and so on chip down the road which improves the experience further.
Regards,
Sieghard

You don't understand my meaning. The fact that you need to buy an
expensive pair of wireless ear buds is a plus for Apple.

In addition, as has been said before elsewhere, they may be removing the
headphone jack this year so they can really wow everyone with something
special next year. As one podcaster pointed out this week, this year the
main topic of conversation is the headphone jack disappearing. While next
year, everyone or most people will have moved on from that and will be
talking about whatever special item they're working on for the 10 year
iPhone. I don't like it any better than other people, but at least they're
helping to ease the transition by including an adaptor in the box this
year. They could just as easily charge $20 or $30 for that $9 adaptor, and
make us buy it as an accessory.

Post by Christopher ChaltainThere is at least one Android handset that beat Apple to the punch
when it came to removing the headphone jack, but most of the Android
phones still have a headphone jack.
IMHO, it'll be hard to tell for Apple to tell if the iPhone 7 is being
well received just because they removed the headphone jack. I'm not
sure what removing the headphone jack actually buys anyone right now.
Any improved audio fidelity you get with the Lightning connected
headphones, you would still see even if the headphone jack was still
there. Sure, you may see thinner and more waterproof phones in the
future, but for now, I don't think anyone is seeing the advantages of
Apple ditching the headphone jack except for Apple and peripheral makers.
I think if the iPhone 7 is received well, it'll be for features that
have been added and not those that have been removed.
Post by Regina AlvaradoAs I have only seen one Android I do not know if the phone Jack is on
it, but for some maybe this would be a good replacement to the new
Apple? I have been told Talk Back is a pretty good program. I believe
too that because Apple has removed the Jack, if well received by the
general public, it will also disappear from the Android and Windows
phones. I think fortunately or unfortunately we are a subset given
drops of accessibility and as we are now using mainstream devices we
are at the public's mercy. Doesn't make it right, just a fact, and we
want parity with our sighted counterparts, right? Kind of like the
ERA. Put women in combat when some said they should never be. Change
is hard, and I sure understand the deaf/blind problem (with my
hearing deficit(, but there are ways around the problems,
inconvenient yes but not worth waging a war over. Tell Apple
accessibility or hold onto old phones or yell here if you must, but
the earphone jack is gone, and there are much, much more important
problems with Voice-over that Apple should be addressing in my opinion.
reggie & Lex
I suspect you're right that the headphone jack is gone for good, but
it's definitely true if anyone who misses the headphone jack doesn't
let Apple know how much they miss it. There's also no reason Apple
couldn't put the headphone jack back in a future device, although
like I said, I would doubt it.
I'm also not sure how much of my regret over missing the headphone
jack is because I'm blind. I suppose I use my headphones more than my
sighted peers because I'll tend to grab them every time I just want
to check the lock screen, but I don't think it's just blind users
who'll be wishing their new phone had a headphone jack on it that
they've taken for granted on all of their electronics for years.
It also sounds like you're saying we, especially as blind consumers,
shouldn't criticize Apple for a decision they made. I'm curious, are
you just talking about Apple or all companies? Are you just talking
about blind consumers or all consumers? For how much Apple wants me
to pay to get an iPhone 7, I think I'm allowed to criticize a decision
Apple made.
Post by Christopher ChaltainPost by Regina AlvaradoI for one don't think Apple is perfect, and I'm not just going to
assume that they'll never make a mistake and they always know what's
best for me. This isn't a knock on Apple, but just those who think we
should just be thankful for whatever Apple decides we as consumers
and blind consumers should be happy with.
Post by Larry LumpkinFolks. The headphone jack is gone for good and I think we should
move on. Apple made that decision years ago and every blind user in
the world wasn't going to alter that decision. Charging while
listening isn't a big deal for me but I'm retired and don't use my
phone all that much for calling anyway. If I need power sooner,
I'll buy the Belcan thingie.

It would be cool if iPhone SE with 3.5mm beats iPhone 7, 7+ hard on
the sales figures. Donât think so, but âŠâŠ Camera is too important
for sighted people.
Take care
Post by Donald MooreYou know, if enough people forego the iPhone 7, maybe the 8 will go
back to the old plug.

You figured that something like this was eventually going to come
out by a mainstream company or via a kickstarter campaign.
Off putting though that you have to shell out an extra $40.00 for
something thatâs not even really a mobile solution. Curious to see
what kind of battery pack designs these same companies are going to
come up with for those of us who may want or need that extra backup.
There goes another $40.00 or $80.00 or whatever on top of
everything else. That and what type of solution theyâre going to
come up with for all the credit card swipers that are so
ubiquitous Appel was actually getting credit yesterday for only
selling the replacement dongles for $9.00, but I guess this shows
theyâre going to get their pound of flesh one way or another.
Those dongles are probably viewed as a lost leader anyway.

Hi all, I really wish Apple had shipped this kind of product in the
box, but for those who want to upgrade and had legitimate concerns
about the lack of ability to use wired headphones and charge,
here's the solution.
