ALSA Woes

This is yet another thread in my continuing effort to get a fully
functional sound card under Suse 9.2

The story so far:

After struggling with my Via chipset, which through web search and
Advocate recommendation, I have come to the conclusion is unworkable and
not worth using, I disabled it in my BIOS and purchased a Sound Blaster
24-bit Live! I did not go out of my way to find this card, I just went
around the street and bought the only card they carried, at Staples.

Big mistake. This card looks like an Audigy, but has the ca0106 chip
and Creative has refused to release the driver.

Months go by...I try OSS...it eventually stops working...I get the
cvsbuild of ALSA....compile and install my drivers...it works, but
poorly...I long for the day of a driver that doesn't require special
handling...but that day never comes!

So, I go to the hardware list...I try to order a Terratec Fun from one
of the very few vendors in the US. I even order 2day air. I check
back and find they ( Terratec USA ) no longer carry the product...sigh.

Then, I decide to eschew all big computing stores and web vendors and
call the nearest local parts store...hoping they will have alternative
manufacturers to Creative.

Eureka, I find one in Auburn, WA. He carries a clone card with the
CMI8738 chip. Yes! It's on the list!

I rush after work to buy one, and great...it's only $12.

I race home and install it. Boot into Suse...and---mmm...not detected!
Ok, I boot into Windows, run the driver disk...not detected! Oh, ok,
I didn't push it all the way into the slot. (No comments.)

I boot into Suse, and WOW! it's detected -- right manufacturer chip and
everything...my mouth starts to water...but then...NOOO...after taking
me to the Suse control panel, and letting me select Quick Install -- it
fails...and tells me to go run Yast on the command line...they threw
salt on my tongue!

Ok, I try. Yast doesn't or won't find the card...but I
remember...gee...all that ALSA dev crap...so, I go through the build and
do a bunch of "make uninstalls" and then delete all the snd references
from /etc/modprobe.conf.local

I boot up...get to the login...and now...ouch..GNOME won't load! It
just comes back to the login screen...ok, I guess I liked KDE better
anyway...mmmm...doesn't seem to detect the card...so I go to Control
Center/Hardware. I let it search and it does find the card, but when I
get to starting the sound system it fails again and tells me to run the
Yast at the command line!

Well, I take a break and boot into XP just to confirm the card is alive,
the XP detects the new hardware but then it takes me into one of the
circular reasoning "wizards". It offers me advice about an Express
"recommended" get the driver from the Internet choice, but then after
two screens says I should go back if I have a CD and use that...mmm...I
cancel and go direct to the CD. I install it and it wants me to reboot
-- I do. When it boots it plays some crazy electronic music, that
sounds very new and foreign and I like. I want to test it, so I load
up Rhapsody's Classic Vault. After first, I am not impressed -- but
then I play with the settings and find that this $12 card is actually
producing much cleaner, distinct sounds than the Sound Blaster 24-bit!
( Is 24-bit all marketing ?! ).

Anyway, I boot back into Suse, and drop to the line command and do the
Yast install. It autodetects the card! Then I boot into KDE, and try
the mixer -- doesn't work...says I need some libsound module. I'm not
complaining since I probably wrenched the whole OS with all my doo-dads
and OSS and ALSA add ons.

I fear that I may need to do a complete reinstall, which would be great,
because I feel confident now that this sound card will work in Suse for me.

At the same time I dread having to load all the stuff I've layered into
my machine ( dvd decoder, bitstream stuff, ATI accelerated drivers ).

Hey, but SuSE is for the /experts/ right!

Give me a day or two and I'll get to a complete rebuild -- right now I'm
listening to Pink Floyd on Rhapsody.

Ok.

The story so far.

I went and completely reinstalled my Suse 9.2 from the ftp iso.

I think I'm a step ahead.

The sound card (CMI8738) was detected. After the install, I was able to
log right into Suse. I saw the card listed. This time, when running
through the configuration, instead of throwing an error and saying to use
command line YaST, it went to the Finish button; however, it did not
actually start, it just reported itself as Stopped. I think I fixed it
though.

Then, as long as I am being canonical here ( in the sense of doing
everything the SuSE/Novell way, and trying not to use any 'add-ons' other
than what's in the distro. I went and set up my monitor, which is a
behemoth 21" CRT. It's a ViewSonic 21 but I didn't see it listed. I
bought it refurb so luckily I found the specs on a web site and entered in
the refresh rate, vsync and hsync and screen dimensions ( 18.8" x 19.8" --
luckily I had pen and paper and remembered that 1 inch = 2.54 mm ! ). I
tried going for the top specs, 1600x1200, and 4million colors. The SaX2
test came out funny, so I went with the basics: 1024x860 but kept the 4
million colors. I decided to check 3-D acceleration which has /never/
worked with my ATI 9200 card ( it just unchecks itself ).

Ok, reboot.

Well, there was no start up sound ( but I hadn't heard that since Suse 9.0 )
so I wasn't too hopeful. Then I was mucking around and shut down the
KInternet dialer ( I don't need it because I have always on DSL ) and must
have hit an error because I heard a little broken glass sound. Cool, I
have sound...even if its only wave files.

Then I try to play an mp3 stream. I go to http://somafm.com and click on a
stream. Amorok launches...but instead of /playing/ the stream, it seems
to just continually *download* it like a file! Any help here would be
appreciated.

Then, I test the ATI card with glxgears...WOW, 1200 fps. Nowhere near the
special driver that can go up to 2300, but that might be good enough ...
and the point of this distro is for me not to be making kernel mods, just
going with the standards.

So, I think I have sound, but have no way to really test it (!).

I think I have acceleration as well, but I have to install UT2004 to see if
its any good.

I can run Real w/o problem.

But again, I am curious about how to get Amarok to run since it looks
like a good application.

So far the "Advocacy" has consisted of:

1) Calling me names.
2) Flooding me with responses by nymshifters
3) Telling me to use "another" app ( sort of like telling me to use
different fingers for my mouse because the driver for the Logitech
Intellisys Wheel Mouse doesn't work right in KDE).

Uh... no.
I told you to use another app to check to see that you could receive
streams, as opposed ot there being a problem with Amarok.

AND, when you asked for a screenshot showing Amarok streaming, I

Burn the DVD
Install from DVD.

Or go buy a boxed version. They have those things, you know. They come

I bought 9.0 full and 9.1 update so I've invested $79 plus $59 in Suse.

I bought 9.2 as a dvd from Amazon ( because I don't have a dvd burner ).

I will spring full price for 9.3 because Beagle would be worth it to me!

Well, I'm glad, as it seems to be working for me.

But it's a discovery I've come to only after months of agony.

If I had started with this card ( or bothered to read the supported card
database ) it would have all been easy.

I'll know better in the future when it comes to Suse...of course, in the
future, Suse Linux with be the standard, and all manufacturers will have to
write drivers for it!!!

More testing.

Just installed UT2004.

The native ATI Suse driver, even with acceleration, just doesn't cut it.

I think I'm taking the Ghost's advice and buying a 5500 GeForce tomorrow at
CompUSA.

In the meantime, I'd appreciate anyone who can help me master my Amarok
problems with streaming mp3 radio stations.

More success -- just installed RP10 and it works great.

Unlike before with the old soundcard:

1. The slider volume control works.
2. It doesn't bring the system to its knees.
3. Performance is good even playing a high bandwidth sound stream ( 255k,
http://kexp.org ).

I still want to master Amarok though...

Now, tomorrow, will be the night of getting DVDs to work on Xine/Kaffiene!

Sambuca here I come...

the card worked fine for me.
Well, I'm glad, as it seems to be working for me.
But it's a discovery I've come to only after months of agony.
If I had started with this card ( or bothered to read the supported card
database ) it would have all been easy.
No Duh.

I'll know better in the future when it comes to Suse...of course, in the
future, Suse Linux with be the standard, and all manufacturers will have
to write drivers for it!!!
You're an idiot. A freakin', ramblin' idiot.

Ok.
The story so far.
I went and completely reinstalled my Suse 9.2 from the ftp iso.
I think I'm a step ahead.
The sound card (CMI8738) was detected. After the install, I was
able to

log right into Suse. I saw the card listed. This time, when running
through the configuration, instead of throwing an error and saying
to

actually start, it just reported itself as Stopped. I think I

Actually, this is a 2 year old desktop that was put together at a computer
show. It has an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ processor, on-board sound (disabled),
Creative SoundBlaster Live 5.1, on-board video (disabled), nVidia geforce4
mmx 440, internal CD/DVD ROM, Internal CDRW, ATI TV Wonder (yes, I watch
TV on the desktop, CSI, at the moment). I have an Epson 740 printer, Epson
perfection 1260 Scanner and a Fuji FinePix A101 Camera. All work.

-I- can listen to streaming audio using Amarok, and xmms. Lately I have
been DLing TV shows (Jag, Andromeda, Enterprise, Dr. Who) because I am
usually out on Friday nights. (Translation: I have an outside life). and
yes, I burn them to data CDs and/or VCDs.

On this desktop box I have installed Red Hat 9, Fedora Core I, Suse 9.1
and Suse 9.2. I have used various Mandrake distros

And... I have never failed to get a peripheral working... on the desktop.
The problems on the laptop was usually PCMCIA related, but everything is
working on it too, including wireless networking and the winmodem.

So, Bailo, as you can see, I am not exactly inexperienced, AND i have a
bit of perspective on installing various Linux distros, various MacOS
versions and various window$ versions, as well as DOS and ProDOS (do you
even know what ProDOS is?

You may now continue your whining.

I suppose I could, if I actually wanted to, however, I dont.

I don't setup my linux box just so that I can stream music,
and play games on it. What a wonderful waste of time that would
be. I might as well just go straight back to windows, if that
was all I used Linux for.

When are you going to come to the conclustion, that you and
Linux just don't mix. In all the time you've haunted COLA,
I've never seen you perform a good setup of Linux yet, and
make your hardware work. It's always some sound card, or
video problem.

Stop buying state of the art hardware, that you will never
be able to configure, and get something you KNOW will work
straight out of the box.

I don't care what you wish.

You act like a backward child. If your distro of the day (usually Suse) is
working, you claim it is the best thing for the world. If it isn't, you
are bitching and moaning about how bad it is. Then, if you get a problem
solved, you are back to screaming about how perfect life is with Suse.

Along with that, you dishonestly snip posts to remove context.

You even tried to prove I could install Linux using my posts which were
talking about problems that are well documented in the literature.

Grow up.

I've seen many technical problems solved here, when its
shown that the OP is geniune, and not just a troll
like Bailo. They are then pointed to a more relevant
group to post to in the future.

In a previous subthread, I read that bailo had accused
rick of being a paid troll, to disrupt COLA by flooding
it. As far as I can see, it's Bailo thats doing that
and has been doing so for as long as I've been reading
COLA, which is at least 2 years now.

If Bailo had one iota of geniune inside of him,
he would know perfectly well that COLA is not
a technical forum. He is not a newbie here,
and should know better.

He is no better than flatfish. He Installs
some version of Linux, then bitches about it.

He is a wintroll, as I've said before.

Ok, LOL.

Here's a kicker.

I'm almost at the point of trying to purchase a support /token/ from Suse to
try and get this issue resolved...and guess what?

I go to this page:

http://www.novell.com/products/linuxprofessional/index.html?sourceidint=productsmenu_linuxprofessional

And I mouse over the left hand menu -- and they appear *underneath* the
flash graphic!! So I can't see which choice I pick for paid support!!!

This is using Konqueror and the nVidia driver ( w/o 3-D support ).

You can't even *pay* to get support from these people!!

Ok, she's plugged in. I booted, the 5200 was autodetected and threw me
into COWS Yast.

Sadly, I could not yet immediately select 3D because it requires me to
download an nVidia patch from YOU "for legal reasons". I'm doing that

about five minutes after saying:

I installed the nVidia driver as instucted using You, but it doesn't take.

If I go to check the 3D button to enable acceleration, it just keeps telling

Remove the driver using instructions on the nVidia page and install the
driver manually.

BTW, you might like to know that Amarok has problems playing certain
streams, at least under Suse.

I am downloading the driver from here:

That's for the tip.

My experience so far as been with all streams.

If you could post a stream ( radio station from a web page ) that you know
is working, I would try it and post my results.

Another poster mentioned several addtional packages needed to get mp3
streams running in Amarok. At least I can use RP10 for now.

Hmm...although, I notice this:

"NOTE: There is no need to try to enable 3D support. It's already

So maybe I'm up and running...but when I try to do a

it says dri is not enabled....

More information.

Ok, doing it the /easy/ way via Yast:

I read some articles and they tell me I have to delete the "nv" driver and
pick "Nvidia". This I do, and then I select "5200".

Ok, if I go to check 3-D Acceleration, it does say "Enabled"...however, at
the point that I accept the new configuration, and go back to the Yast
Screen from Sax, it has all the new changes /except/ it says 3-D disabled!

If I go back into sax to change configuration, it's back to /disabled/ and
if i try to enable it I get the message about downloading the nvidia
patch...!!!

If you already have an X config file working with a different driver
(such as the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver), then all you need to do is find
the relevant Device section and replace the line:

Driver "nv"
(or Driver "vesa")

with

Driver "nvidia"

In the Module section, make sure you have:

Load "glx"

You should also remove the following lines:

Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"

From my XF86Config:

Section "Device"
BoardName "GeForce4 MX 440"
BusID "1:0:0"
Driver "nvidia"
Identifier "Device[0]"

VendorName "NVidia"
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "v4l"
Load "dbe"
Load "glx"
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"
Load "extmod"
EndSection

Now, go off to the nVidia page and do some reading.

Right, but I bet I have pushed my Linux system further than you ever
could hope to:

1) I have run an ATI TV Wonder card in Linux

2) I have run the SB Live! by compiling my own drivers from the ALSA root.

3) Run the advanced drivers for the ATI 9200 by compiling my own from
the sources.

4) Use the UT2004 for Linux game as a bench mark ( and because it's fun

And just so you know, Bailo, I have run Linux on laptops, desktops and
even a Beige G3 Mac, and have not had a fraction of the problems you
have had.
Right, but I bet I have pushed my Linux system further than you ever could
1) I have run an ATI TV Wonder card in Linux
I am watching TV on a ATI TV card now.
2) I have run the SB Live! by compiling my own drivers from the ALSA root.
I have compiled sound drivers too. Big Deal.
3) Run the advanced drivers for the ATI 9200 by compiling my own from the
sources.
I switched to nVidia. The closest Iv'e come to compiling from source is
manual installation.
4) Use the UT2004 for Linux game as a bench mark ( and because it's fun to
blow up stuff ).
I don't play those.
5) Access and experiement with many forms of streaming audio and video.
Yes? So? I've streaming audio for years, although I have done much with
video, other than TV.
6) Create and host dynamic web sites with content built with java, asp.net
on mono, links to mysql.
Big deal. I have created and managed web pages with dynamic content, too.
7) SDL/c/c++/c# development.
I have don't that.

So what? I've done most of what you have done, and still haven't had a
fraction of the problems you have.

BTW, did you figure out proDOS yet? I'll give you a clue. it preceded DOS
3.2.

That sums up bailo. Everyone on earth can make it work, and he can't.
Can you make Amarok work with a streaming media site using Suse 9.2?
Screenshots please...

I'm running Novell desktop, which I think is based upon Suse 9.2.
Amorak streams very well for me. No problem. I'm wondering
if Bailo is just making up these problems, or if he is
really that dumb.

And then he troll-posts in Microsoft Windows groups saying how sucky
Windows is and what a great Linux user he is. I'm not making a comment
on Windows here, but the second part of my sentence... heh heh.
