On youtube is Martin Simpson's cover version of Robin Williamson's
"October Song", released a few days ago. Personally, I had to push my
lower jaw shut with my hand.

I last saw him at Shrewsbury, a few years ago. I still have bro#2's 'Layers
of the Onion' LP, which I promised to somerat many years ago - possibly the

point in me trying to play it any more.[1]

[1]Mind you, I listened to quite a lot of Doc Watson not so long ago and
felt the same. And with John Renbourn before that. And Bert Jansch.
And Leo Kottke. And...er... OK, I withdraw the offer.

Without wishing to undermine the very definite talents of this or any
other shredder, alive or recently deceased, I should have thought
being able to recognise the tune after having been told what it was
ought to come into the evaluation somewhere.

Blimey! I'm seriously impressed. It's less my thing than acoustic
fingerstyle, but an amazing performance.

I'm delighted that, very gradually, more and more women are appearing as
fine pop musicians in what were almost exclusively male domains - drums
(e.g. the terrific Victoria Smith), guitar, bass etc. There's a long
way to go, but it's something I do find hopeful.

(And, having spent a lot of my career encouraging young women into the
physical sciences and engineering, this year's Nobel Prize for Chemistry
cheered me, too.)
