I see several familiar names.

A definite "don't miss" is Big John Horton from Greeneville, Mississippi. Another is Lil Ray Neal who I saw at the Baton Rouge Blues Society's competition.

A couple of other very good groups are in the mix as well. Jill West from Pittsburgh made the finals two years ago. Mike Crandall from Connecticut had the misfortune to be in the same IBC semifinals as Delta Moon the year they won. Eric Hughes (Memphis) has been one of my favorite players ever since I met him. Very good player, even better writer, and all around good guy. Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz is a pretty good band also.

Looks like another very good year for the IBC.

After all the hellaballo over contestants from last year, the only
names I reconginize on that list are from Louisiana State and Ohio
State, errr, I mean Lil' Ray Neal (who actually has ties to Southern
Univ., not LSU), Scott Albert Johnson, Patrick McLaughlin, Willie
Phoenix (whom I believe only had seen once during my ten year with the
Columbus Blues Alliance), and Big Red & The Soul Benders (who played
in Baton Rouge on Thanksgiving weekend).

This mean I'm either really out of touch with the blues scene or the
various blues societies are doing something right in sending alot of
bands that we've haven't heard from.

Mo' Blues from Argentina played at Vancouver, WA's MicroBlues
Festival in June. They were really a lot of fun. Definately in the
Blues/Rock genre.

We all know Mike Miller of Blue Stew from here on
Blues-L but have you heard them play? I haven't
heard them live, but I think I have all or most of their
CD's as well as Mike's "Homeward". All are excellent!!!

These are two I would recommend you check out if you are
going to the IBC's (As well as Franco & the Stingers and Alice
Stuart representing the Cascade Blues Association in Portland,

Regarding the Announcement of the Blues Society's Bands, can we go ahead and
post the bands on myspace? I work the Baton Rouge Blues Society's Myspace
page and would love to post it in our blog.

Are these bands correct?

Regarding the Announcement of the Blues Society's Bands, can we go ahead and
post the bands on myspace? I work the Baton Rouge Blues Society's Myspace
page and would love to post it in our blog.

Are these bands correct?

Thanks,
Pam

I have it on good authority (i.e., Cadillac Zack) that Andy Walo is a helluva guitar player. Compliments don't come easy to some, so it must be so. Check out his band.

Also check out John-Alex Mason in the solo-duo category. He played at the Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival this year.

And Ben Prestage is familiar, but I don't know why. I just know I was supposed to remember his name.

By "last year", do you mean the "last IBC" early in 2007, or two IBCs ago
in 2006? If he was at the last IBC I didn't see him, but I did see him in
the finals in 2006, and I absolutely agree - he should have won.
Definitely the most impressive 'one-man band' I've seen, and the heaviest,
bluesiest act in the acoustic finals IMO.

Ben P was at the IBC in Feb 2007

Mo Blues has played a bunch of our events, fun guys but like someone said
leans toward rock

Todd Simpson & Mojo Child. I am sure I mentioned Todd on Blues-l about 10
years ago. I heard about a local 7 or 8 year old that had lukemia that
played harmoinca. I looked up the number told his parents he could sit in
with me anytime. So he would show up blow harp and amazingly sing like
Robert Johnson. Now he is 18-19 years old, been in out of the hospital all
his life and plays wild guitar. He is a legitimate prodigy - amazing but
way, way too over the top in his playing for my taste. Regardless of his
over the topness his talent is amazing for someone that has not played very
long.

2BLU is the duo from the local blues (Magic City Blues Society) and they
have been to the IBC before. I think they are fabulous

Ben Prestage played in both the 2006 and 2007 finals. In 2006 he placed behind winner Eden Brent (who will be in Memphis Wednesday January 30 at the New Daisy). In 2007 he placed behind Nathan James and Ben Hernandez.Ricky Stevens

I just renewed my Blues Foundation membership and did not see the Bay Area Blues Society on the list of affiliated societies, which are the only societies that can send an entrant to IBC. I have no more information that that.

Not another "helluva guitar"!? That is the one thing about the IBC that
I'm sick to death of, "Smokin',Killer, the Legendary, <insert fav
adj>Guitar Players"! It's not so much a Blues comp as it is a shred
fest. 99% of the bands there feature the guitar over voice, piano,
harmonica, songwriting (whatever happened to that?)...anything. They are
all starting to sound alike to me.
I would love to hear just one act feature the "song" for a change, and
give all the TX string slingers the day off.

I'll even bet that SRV (God rest his soul) would even agree!

I have it on good authority (i.e., Cadillac Zack) that Andy Walo is a
helluva guitar player. Compliments don't come easy to some, so it
must be so. Check out his band.
Also check out John-Alex Mason in the solo-duo category. He played
at the Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival this year.
And Ben Prestage is familiar, but I don't know why. I just know I
was supposed to remember his name.

It isn't the "TX string slingers" that's the problem, it's just that so many people try to emulate them. Those that don't are usually filled with so much envy that they're bitter about their success. There was at least one zeller on this list that seemed incredulous when I reported that Denny Freeman had been hired as a member of Bob Dylan's band a couple of years ago (and replaced another TX sting slinger, at that). Demanded to know how the hell he got that gig....like, wtf. I have no idea what went through his mind when about a year later Dylan himself said that this was best band he's ever had.

Relax. California has had some great blues guitar players too. Hell, T-Bone, Pee Wee Crayton, Roy Gaines. Albert Collins. Johnny and Oscar Moore. Oh shit, I just realized they were all from Texas too. (put that blade up bro, i'm just funnin' with ya....i know Hollywood Fats and Jr Watson aren't from here!).

Well Mike, Zack believes that Blues is all about the vocals, so my assumption is that Andy Walo is good all around. I've never seen or heard him personally, but I, for one, have had quality experiences with musicians that Zack has recommended, so... He's closer to your neighborhood than mine---have you heard him?

Yes indeed DebilLu, I've heard Andy. He is another one of those cats I'm
talking about. He is very good (and sings well too) but it's a case of
that ol' Generic, Out-of-the Box LED ZEP/SRV/REO Speedwagon, Mega Death,
Rock/Blues (emphasis on the Rock) worshipers. Personally I think Zack is
light years ahead of Andy when Blues playing is involved. But, as you
know mileage varies around here so here are a coupla clips for youz...
mike ps, Fred, if you are reading this, don't bother. This guy will give
you a headache that might NEVER go away!

I watched the youtube clip and failed to find the LED ZEP/REO Speedwagon,
Mega Death similarity. Not even similar except he's using a Gibson. A
touch of Texas guitar tone, and of course some blues rock (the song has a
back beat), but the description below had me all set to hear a shredder.
He's a pretty reserved riffer and is more about rhythm than shredding.
Maybe he needs a resonator guitar to increase his blues cred.

Well Mike, Zack believes that Blues is all about the vocals, so my
assumption is that Andy Walo is good all around. I've never seen or
heard him personally, but I, for one, have had quality experiences
with musicians that Zack has recommended, so... He's closer to
your neighborhood than mine---have you heard him?

I have it on good authority (i.e., Cadillac Zack) that Andy Walo is a
helluva guitar player. Compliments don't come easy to some, so it
must be so. Check out his band.
Also check out John-Alex Mason in the solo-duo category. He played
at the Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival this year.
And Ben Prestage is familiar, but I don't know why. I just know I
was supposed to remember his name.

Yes, I could definitely hear the subtle influence of Lonnie Johnson and
Eddie Lang in those clips... NOT! <g>

Not that there is anything wrong with blues/ROCK. Heck that stuff used
to sound great when I used to do drugs back in the last millennium...

The Gibson comments are pretty funny. Personally, if I see that the guitar player in any band has a Gibson, I'm happy! I know tone has more to do with the guitarist than the guitar, BUT I've heard the best tones ever coming out of Gibsons, held in several different hands.

we got Mikey Jr and Stone Cold Blues Band in town this weekend for the
Annual Blues Ball. We got a great response from having Mikey Jr at the blues
fest so we booked him for the ball also. Should be a fun night.

Instead of having it at a club this year we are having it in a hotel
ballroom so if people do not want to drive home or whatever they can get a
room

I've heard the best tones coming from all sort of guitars. Guitar-brand
bigotry in general cracks me up.
Let's hear context and musical ideas above all else.

No offense to anyone here...just my two cents. :)

I know a couple of the players Deb is probably referring to, and they tend
to use straight ahead Gibson tones, Les Paul with humbuckers or P-90's
straight into a non master volume amp with reverb. It's almost impossible
to get that tone out of a Strat or Tele unless it's been heavily modified,
and even then it's not the same. OTOH, tones typically associated with
Strats and Teles or Silvertones or Gretches are all good tones, too, and
preferred by many others. Look at the EC, SRV, Hendrix, Prince, Danny
Gatton, Jim Campilongo crowd for examples. But Peter Green got that cool
Black Magic Woman tone from a Les Paul with the pickups out of phase,
probably because it was wired wrong at the factory. Now everybody does it
on purpose, but it tends to work best on a Gibson.

I think it's totally legit for people to notice which guitars produce the
tones they prefer. We Gear Heads notice. I love the sound of a Les Paul,
but I don't like its weight - and it has too many !*#$!! knobs.

I've heard the best tones coming from all sort of guitars. Guitar-brand
bigotry in general cracks me up.
Let's hear context and musical ideas above all else.
No offense to anyone here...just my two cents. :)

Amen, sister!!
The Gibson comments are pretty funny. Personally, if I see that the
guitar player in any band has a Gibson, I'm happy! I know tone has more to
do with the guitarist than the guitar, BUT I've heard the best tones ever
coming out of Gibsons, held in several different hands.

Stan:

There was a discussion of Peter Green's guitar on a pickup winders forum
recently. It seems that the neck pickup had been rewound, which resulted
in it being out of phase. I saved the thread to a PDF file:

http://www.blueguitar.org/new/schem/_gtr/AMPAGE_discussion-Peter_Green_Neck_Pickup.pdf

FWIW according to Spence, Peter Green says he made all of his Fleetwood
Mac studio recordings using a Gibson ES-345. (For the benefit of the
non-techie folk out there, the ES-345 is like the famous ES-335 thinline
semi-hollow body guitar, but with the Varitone circuitry associated with
B.B. King among others.) After reading that thread I definitely want to
add the Varitone circuit to one of my guitars!

As for the various comments about Gibson, the old Gibson factory in
Kalamazoo was bought by Heritage Guitars, who hired many of the
old-timers who had been working there for Gibson. So it could be argued
that Heritage makes the most authentic versions of the classic Gibson
guitars these days.

I have been very impressed with the PRS SE line of guitars made in Korea
and sell new for $350 to $425. I picked up one of their Soapbar II
guitars and it was twice as good as my Gibson Les Paul Junior Special
(Special Junior? I get those names mixed up! LOL) and at half the price.
The necks are particularly nice, with a shaped out heel that is very
comfortable to play. The stock P-90 pickups were a bit harsh to my ears
so I replaced the Alnico 5 magnets with Alnico 2 ones, and they now
sound as good to me as boutique pickups which would have set me back at
least $100 apiece.

That's something nice about the new Korean-made PRS SE Singlecut
guitars- they are much thinner and lighter than a Les Paul, and with
only two knobs. Once again they have a neck to die for, and once again
the humbucker pickups sounded a bit harsh to me so I replaced them with
two Gibson BurstBucker pickups I had around. These guitars have a
beautiful veneer on the carved top and look like something selling for
$3500 (not $411.58). The Korean factory is using computer-aided
manufacturing techniques and I think that PRS has been fine-tuning the
software over the years so that their guitars are coming out damned near
perfect these days (I wasn't that impressed by the original SE Santana
guitars.)

The Epiphone guitars coming out of Korea are also very impressive, but
you might have to try out several before you find one that you like.
They make so many different models and in such high quantities that they
don't have the control that PRS has over their SE line.

Of course if you can afford a vintage Gibson from the 50's you can't do
any better than that! <g>

The Long Island Blues Society's two entries, are going to be quite exciting.
JP Blues is a trio. They have recently added Pat Adkins, a veteran R&B and
jazz player as well as a deeply grooving drummer. I met Pat over a decade
ago when he was playing in a trio called The Deep. The Deep were Mike Frost,
currently touring with Estaban and Chuck Alder of legendary Long Island Band
the Illusion. Chuck and Mike both played six string basses. Pat's absolute
joy in playing drums made me want to write again. JP is just about old
enough to drive, yet he has sat in with just about every blues band on Long Island
soaking up music like a sponge. A natural player, he has been mentored by
Sam Taylor and Kerry Kearney. Bassist John Young is another youngster with
abilities far beyond what his age would dictate. He is as solid as they come
making up the foundation of one formidable blues machine.
Steve Robinson who is our solo representative is a veteran player and
storyteller. Be ready for a fine time with a man who brings elegance while
remaining authentic.

Tommy Carter got better tone out of an off-the-rack strat than most people could ever get from a million dollar custom job. Blues-l lurker Sean Carney is one of those special players that can do a lot of different things well. The fact that he can get hollow-body tone from a strat is just more evidence that tone is more dependent on the player than the instrument.

Again, I'm not a gear head nor am I one of those people that believe you have to play a certain type of instrument. I've heard good music come out of everything from custom Gibsons and Martins to Wal-Mart originals. Sound has a lot more to do with who is making it than what is making it.

TONE, IMO, is in the fingers. Amps, pickups and brands of guitars just
amplify the acoustic sound of an acoustic, semi-, or full hollow body
or a solid body like a strat, tele , or LP/SG style guitars. :) Henry
Qualls is a shining example. I've seen him play Maybelline (Montgomery
Wards catalog store, AIRLINE brand cheap guitar) and HBs fancy or
vintage gear. He always sounded like Henry. HB sounds like himself on
any guitar he plays, too. So do most Skilled players.

"TONE, IMO, is in the fingers. "

I practice electric without an amp and have for years. Doing so has
allowed
me to alter the nuance of sound much better than guys who compress the
living
daylights out of their sound with boutique amps and fancy pedals. Don't get
me
wrong, there a million roads to developing ones sound and many can be quite
good...but for me...I do agree...

most tone is indeed in the hands and fingers.

Goes well beyond that. Django showed up for a recording session
without his guitar. The folk at the studio dug around and found a
battered guitar and he recorded on it. It was missing half its
back but he sounded like Django.

Not just guitars either. There was a big jazz concert- "Jazz
at the Phil" I thiink with about six great tenor sax players
all lined up, side by side. During the procedings, one of
them stopped blowng and passed his horn to the next one
to him and he took a chorus and so it went until the music
wound up at the other end of the line. According to those
who were there, you could tell which one was playing that
single sax with your eyes closed. Horn players have done
it the other way around as well of course- several players
playing so you can't tell which is playing.

Top rate musicians are the masters of their instruments,
not the other way around...
