* Anyone reading this posting is eligible to vote, whether or not you
voted in the first round.
* In each category, delete the four nominees you don't want to vote
for, leaving your one single vote in each category.
* You don't have to vote in every category, but please try to vote in
as many categories as you can. If you are skipping a category, please
delete all of the nominees in that category.
* Please try to keep spacing between each category to a minimum. All I
should see is the category title, next line your vote, a space, and
then the next category. This will help keep your ballot short.
* The deadline to submit votes is Friday, July 21, 2006, at 10:00 p.m.
(U.S. Pacific time).
* Please send your ballot directly to me at ***@hotmail.com (if
that e-mail address has been obscured, that's gromit82 AT hotmail DOT
com). Unlike in the nominations round, I will be compiling these
ballots myself, so you can respond directly to this message. You can
also post your votes to the newsgroup if you want, but all ballots must
be e-mailed to me to be counted.
* The ballot is being posted to the rec.arts.tv, rec.arts.sf.tv, and
rec.arts.animation newsgroups. You may encourage people to vote in the
Rattys on your own web site or blog or on other television-related
newsgroups, if you do so with good netiquette, but please don't post
the ballot anywhere else. Just tell people they can find the ballot at
the rec.arts.tv newsgroup.
* In the final results posting, I will post the percentages received by
all nominees if and only if I receive ballots from more than 100
voters.
* Thanks to everyone who voted. Now it's time to pick your winners

*** 12TH ANNUAL RATTY AWARDS ***
This is the final ballot for the 2005-2006 Ratty Awards for the
rec.arts.tv newsgroup, as compiled by Robert Licuria.
On the cusp: Shows which came close to nominations in multiple
categories but failed to secure any actual nominations included Boston
Legal, Everwood, and The 4400. In addition, shows that did receive
nominations, but also just missed in multiple categories, included
House, The West Wing, Rome, and Lost.
Okay, color me confused. The way I understood this to work was that
all nominations would make it into the final ballot. So I put my
nominations into shows that I thought were worthy but no one else had
nominated. Are you telling me that's not how it works?????
Crap.. That means a show like the 4400 that was worthy (if not quite
as worthy this year) may have missed out because I went for shows that
weren't being nominated... I think it needs to be spelled out more
clearly next year that only the top nominees (top five?) will make it
into the final ballot. I also probably would have put up Richard
Schiff for his work as Toby Ziegler now that I think about it.
Probably would have been a guest actor this season, though I always
think of him as a regular.

Not really. Most groups seemed to be having the same nominations which
is why I decided to go for different nominees in those categories.

Sorry for any confusion. When I first posted the ballot I got a
question about how the voting process worked, so I added a sentence in
parentheses at the end of paragraph 2 of the rules, and included it in
Post by shawn
2. You can nominate up to six shows or people per category. You don't have to vote in
every category or submit the full number of six nominees in each category, but please try
to nominate in as many categories as possible. (The most-nominated shows and people
will advance to the final round of voting to determine the RATTY winners for the year.)
On next year's ballot I will make sure this point is spelled out from
the start.

Hey, at least I can spell "your." :)

I originally thought it should would like it did, but someone (I think
Ian) said something that convinced me it didn't work that way. I even
said why I was voting the way I did in my response in this group and
no one pointed out my mistake. So I blame all of you for my incorrect
understanding and the lost votes. :)
At least most of the shows and people that did make it on the ballot
on those that I like. So it's not like the Emmy nominations where I
have to wonder what they were drinking before picking nominees.

Boy, howdy, is THAT a tough call.

Can we just give Caruso a lifetime unacheivement award or something and
retire him to give others a chance?

No, I think he has earned the right to a shelf full of the limburger
rats for worst performer. Perhaps next year, we can expand it to Worst
Performer (Male) and Worst Performer (Female).

If it is not out of order now, I so move.

Boy, howdy, is THAT a tough call.

No, I think he has earned the right to a shelf full of the limburger
rats for worst performer. Perhaps next year, we can expand it to Worst
Performer (Male) and Worst Performer (Female).
If it is not out of order now, I so move.
That makes it tougher, because some people seem to be fixated on
Caruso. So he's likely to keep winning the male vote. Personally I
don't know who I would put up for the worst male actor this past
season, but Kaley Cuoco easily wins worst female actress, and worst
actor for this past season. She might be good looking, but she needs
some help in the acting department. Unfortunately those jobs will
probably keep heading her way because of her looks so she won't work
on the acting skills.

I think Cuoco is a fine comedienne, but this past season of "Charmed"
showed that she may one of the few actors who is totally suited to
comedy, and totally unsuited to drama.

If I were her manager, I'd tell her to keep shooting for sitcoms, from
here on in.

Is she really? I haven't seen her in anything so it's harder to judge,
but there's enough bits of humor in "Charmed" to make me wonder about
her ability to do comedy.

FTR, I thought she was great on "8 Simple Rules" (for most of the show's
run).

So, yeah - I think she can do comedy.

Ian (It may be rather 'one-note' comedy in Cuoco's case, in the same
way that Charisma Carpenter's roles tend to be 'one-note'. But, if it's
a good 'note', I say, "Go for it!!")

Actually, it seems like you need another category -- worst PERSONALITY.

Then you have a place for Paris Hilton, Kelly Ripa, Katie Couric,

That's actually quite likely. I've seen comments from various stars
over the years that says they don't have the time to watch TV while
working so they might only see a show or two. With Tivos it's easier
to work it in, but there are still a large number of people that don't
use any DVRs, and won't bother with VCRs to catch shows they can't see
because of work. So you have a fair number of people voting on shows
they haven't seen which is a recipe for disaster.

I intermixed my votes along with some discussion about the votes.

MOST IMPROVED SERIES

I've never seen her doing anything else. I've always been a bit mystified

I had to go with South Park, because there isn't enough good satire on
television. But I really like the writing on Kim Possible - hopefully
they'll be making more shows. *
Yes, they are making another batch of KPs. I want to know if they're
going to set them before SO THE DRAMA and just ignore it's events; I
fear that's the most likely way to go.

I think there's been at least a few episodes since then, and both Ron and
Kim are in denial about it. *

Yeah, but I think those are episodes begun before SO THE DRAMA (which
was clearly a series finale) and just now being burned off.

But they've announced they're going into production on a NEW batch of
episodes. Those are the ones I was wondering about.

I hope their creative teams hadn't scattered to the winds . . .

*** 12TH ANNUAL RATTY AWARDS ***

This is the final ballot for the 2005-2006 Ratty Awards for the
rec.arts.tv newsgroup, as compiled by Robert Licuria.

The following are the rules for this second stage of voting:

Terry O'Quinn as John Locke - Lost (ABC)
James Callis as Dr. Gaius Baltar - Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
Again, Terry O'Quinn was good, but I felt Callis portrayed a more
complex character and did it quite well.
What. The. Heck?! Shawn. What. The. Heck?!?!!

*** 12TH ANNUAL RATTY AWARDS ***
This is the final ballot for the 2005-2006 Ratty Awards for the
rec.arts.tv newsgroup, as compiled by Robert Licuria.
Busy! Busy!
Will try to get to this tomorrow, but Thurs. or Friday are more
likely...
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
Battlestar Galactica led all series in nominations, receiving 14
(compared to 9 last year), making it the most nominated show this year.
However, NBC took home top honors among networks, receiving 34
nominations.
Great. Here we go again...
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
Welcome to the party *and* we'll miss you: Threshold received 3
nominations including Best SF Series for its only season.
Wow. And "Surface" and "Invasion" didn't?! That's a *joke*.

Sorry for the multiple postings. I always wondered why people did that until
it happened to ME.

Software malfunction. Be more specific-- it kept asking if I want to create
a new profile when I tried to send the post. I had no clue what just

Not 'instead of'. Both Kreitzer and Licori actively encourage also posting
to the newsgroup (to increase content, discussion, and interest). You just
need to be sure to email a copy to Kreitzer.

DRAMA GUEST ACTRESS

COMEDY SERIES
How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
I actually tried to like AD and Scrubs, they just didn't do it for me, for
whatever reason
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
COMEDY LEAD ACTOR
Since I don't watch any of them...
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
COMEDY LEAD ACTRESS
Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore - Gilmore Girls (WB)
Warning to Rob, there were actresses I would have chosen over her
<cough>hannigan</cough> that didn't make the list
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTOR
Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson - How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
Here, I can't think of anyone that didn't make the list that I would choose
over his performance

COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Kelly Bishop as Emily Gilmore - Gilmore Girls (WB)
Well, she's not even my number one choice on GG, but she is number one out
of this list
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
COMEDY GUEST ACTOR
Andy Richter as Stan - The New Adventures of Old Christine, recurring
(CBS)
Andy Richter is Never the wrong choice
Post by Joshua Kreitzer

COMEDY WRITING
Since I don't watch any of these...
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
COMEDY DIRECTING
Kenny Ortega - Gilmore Girls, "Friday Night's Alright For Fighting"
(WB)
This would have beaten a lot stronger (from my viewpoint) competition, it
isn't just the best of available choices
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF SERIES
Doctor Who (Sci Fi)
I'm a little surprised that Ghost Whisperer didn't make the top 5. Anyway,
I like the Eccleston Doctor better than season 2 of Galactica, I'm not sure
I would have chosen it over the 1st season of Galactica though.
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF LEAD ACTOR
Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor - Doctor Who (Sci Fi)
And I like Eccleston's performance better than Olmos'. So say we some.
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF LEAD ACTRESS
Billie Piper as Rose Tyler - Doctor Who (Sci Fi)
I think I might have had a harder choice if Jennifer Love Hewitt had made
the cut.
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF SUPPORTING ACTOR
James Callis as Dr. Gaius Baltar - Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
There are actors not making the cut that would make this interesting, but
among the ones that did...
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Grace Park as Lt. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii - Battlestar Galactica (Sci
Fi)
There are actresses that didn't make the cut, including at least one from
Galactica, that would make it interesting, but I'd likely still pick Park.
I'm a big supporter of the Naked Boomer Volleyball Team.

And for those that think I'm a mindless Whedonista (Hi Ian), sorry Amy, but
I don't watch Alias.
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF GUEST ACTOR
John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness - Doctor Who, recurring (Sci
Fi)
I can think of a couple of Galactica actors, and a Ghost Whisperer actor
that might have got my vote over him.

SF GUEST ACTRESS
Michelle Forbes as Admiral Helena Cain - Battlestar Galactica,
recurring (Sci Fi)
Same here (except substituting Who for Galactica)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF WRITING
David Weddle & Bradley Thompson - Battlestar Galactica, "Downloaded"
(Sci Fi)
SF DIRECTING
Jeff Woolnough - Battlestar Galactica, "Downloaded" (Sci Fi)

When Alexis turns in a performance even *half* as good as Graham's,
she'll start getting some awards love. But she clearly didn't
understand what 90% of her storyline was about the entire season, so
she just floundered. Worked for the first half of the season, but

Don't get me wrong, I think she did a terrible job in the first half
of the season, too, it's just that it worked in a
so-bad-it's-good-sort-of-way, 'cause Alexis clearly didn't know what
was going on with Rory any more than Rory understood what was going on
with Rory. I also think that she did a much better job in the second
half of the season than the first, but that's not really saying much
as IMO even before the finale, she wasn't responding to pretty much
any of the material but the "we've got to save the Yale Daily News
from missing its first ever deadline due to Paris's meltdown" episode.
That and partings were IMO Bledel's ONLY good performances all season,
and they were both in the second half of the season.

But IMO, if Lorelai and Rory could watch Gilmore Girls this season,
they'd both rip Alexis's performance overall for being just as wooden
as Sofia Coppolla in Godfather III.

Maybe her wooden performance was actually Rory's way of coping with

subconsciously missing Lorelai, missing Yale, missing her life. Maybe she
was supposed to be wooden.

That's *exactly* what I'm saying. Thing is, I don't think *Alexis*
realized how wooden she was being and even if she did, she clearly
*hated* what Amy required her to do this season. Contrast that with
Lauren, who has readily admitted in public that she hated the Lor-Rory
breakup storyline and had heated arguments with Amy about it, but
eventually came to terms with the storyline and Amy's objectives in
telling it, to the point that she greatly enjoyed the challenge of the
season finale. IMO, the show and Rory have pretty much evolved to the
point where Alexis needs to find a different/better acting coach than
whoever she's seeing right now, because she's not rising to the
challenge of it -- and that in turn is going to affect her ability to
get even *easy* roles in movies in the future, like her Sin City and
Traveling Pants roles.

"The Best"
BEST SERIES ON TELEVISION
Arrested Development (Fox)
Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
Lost (ABC)
The Office (NBC)
Veronica Mars (UPN)
Given these choices, VM is the only option:

Veronica Mars (UPN)
(VM is actually my #2 Show of the Year, behind "Prison Break".)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
DRAMA SERIES
House (Fox)
Veronica Mars (UPN)
These are the only two choices, and as VM is my #2, and "House" is only
my #4 (and "24" *sucked* this year, and "Grey's Anatomy" *sucks*
**every** year!!). So:

Veronica Mars (UPN)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
DRAMA LEAD ACTOR
Hugh Laurie as Gregory House - House (Fox)
Wentworth Miller as Michael Scofield - Prison Break (Fox)
Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer - 24 (Fox)
Hallelujah! PB made it somewhere!!
I've seen only these three, and it's no surprise who I'm going with:

Wentworth Miller as Michael Scofield - Prison Break (Fox)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
DRAMA LEAD ACTRESS
Kristen Bell as Veronica Mars - Veronica Mars (UPN)
No contest.
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTOR
Enrico Colantoni as Keith Mars - Veronica Mars (UPN)
Jason Dohring as Logan Echolls - Veronica Mars (UPN)
T. R. Knight as George O'Malley - Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
Gregory Itzin as Charles Logan - 24 (Fox)
Dang. This is a close race for the two VM'ers. The truth is, I think
Dohring had more to work with in season #1. So I'm going with:

Enrico Colantoni as Keith Mars - Veronica Mars (UPN)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Katherine Heigl as Izzie Stevens - Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
Mary Lynn Rajskub as Chloe O'Brian - 24 (Fox)
Jean Smart as Martha Logan - 24 (Fox)
Kate Walsh as Addison Shepherd - Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey - Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
There's not much to work with here. Despite the fact that I think Smart
was given more to do, and despite the fact that Walsh & Wilson are
probably the only saving graces of the putrid show they star on, I'm
going with:

Mary Lynn Rajskub as Chloe O'Brian - 24 (Fox)

She's simply the best part of "24", season in, and season out.
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
DRAMA GUEST ACTOR
Harry Hamlin as Aaron Echolls - Veronica Mars, recurring (UPN)
This is the only one that's even close to my own nominations.
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
DRAMA GUEST ACTRESS
Charisma Carpenter as Kendall Casablancas - Veronica Mars, recurring
(UPN)
Alyson Hannigan as Trina Echolls - Veronica Mars, "My Mother, the
Fiend" (UPN)
Monica Keena as Bonnie Crasnoff - Grey's Anatomy, "Into You Like a
Train" (ABC)
Tina Majorino as Cindy "Mac" Mackenzie - Veronica Mars, recurring (UPN)
I've seen all of these. As much as I generally love Keena's
performances, I'm going with the only real 'stand-out,
take-notice-of-me!' performance here:

Charisma Carpenter as Kendall Casablancas - Veronica Mars, recurring
(UPN)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
DRAMA WRITING
Rob Thomas & John Enbom - Veronica Mars, "Not Pictured" (UPN)
DRAMA DIRECTING
John T. Kretchmer - Veronica Mars, "Not Pictured" (UPN)
No contest.

This next part will be quick and brief, as I'm sure most of my nominees
didn't make it...
Post by Joshua Kreitzer

NO VOTE.
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
COMEDY LEAD ACTRESS
Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid - Scrubs (NBC)
Marcia Cross as Bree Van De Kamp - Desperate Housewives (ABC)
Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore - Gilmore Girls (WB)
Crud. This is tough. As much as I generally disdain her character,
Graham was great this year. But so was Cross. This is a narrow win, but
I'm going with:

Marcia Cross as Bree Van De Kamp - Desperate Housewives (ABC)

SF SERIES
Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
Doctor Who (Sci Fi)
Lost (ABC)
Medium (NBC)
Threshold (CBS)
Ugh. What a disappointment this category turned out to be. It's "Lost"
(in a weak season), but default:

Lost (ABC)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF LEAD ACTOR
William Fichtner as Tom Underlay - Invasion (ABC)
As I said, a weak category - Fichtner is head and shoulders above
everyone else.
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF LEAD ACTRESS
NO VOTE.

(The worst set of nominees ever in a SFTV category, IMO.)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF SUPPORTING ACTOR
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Mr. Eko - Lost (ABC)
Naveen Andrews as Sayid Jarrah - Lost (ABC)
Terry O'Quinn as John Locke - Lost (ABC)
It really comes down to these three, and O'Quinn just edges Andrews:

Terry O'Quinn as John Locke - Lost (ABC)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Amy Acker as Kelly Peyton - Alias (ABC)
Yunjin Kim as Sun Kwon - Lost (ABC)
It's Kim, by default. (I'd like to be able to vote for Acker, but that
means I would have actually have had to sit down and inflict 5th season
"Alias" on myself - wasn't gonna happen.)

Yunjin Kim as Sun Kwon - Lost (ABC)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF GUEST ACTOR
John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness - Doctor Who, recurring (Sci

Henry Ian Cusick as Desmond Hume - Lost, recurring (ABC)
Michael Emerson as Henry Gale - Lost, recurring (ABC)
Kelsey Grammer as Angel of Death - Medium, "Death Takes a Policy" (NBC)
Jeffrey Dean Morgan as John Winchester - Supernatural, recurring (WB)
Wow. Not a single one of my nominations made it here. This is getting
depressing. By default, it's:

Michael Emerson as Henry Gale - Lost, recurring (ABC)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
SF GUEST ACTRESS
NO VOTE. (another terrible list of nominees)

(And disappointing that "The Girl in the Cafe" made it in here over some
of the worthier BBC-America fare).
By default, it's:

Bleak House (PBS)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
VARIETY SERIES/SPECIAL

WORST SERIES ON TELEVISION
7th Heaven (WB)
American Idol (Fox)
The Apprentice (NBC)
Britney and Kevin: Chaotic (UPN)
Unan1mous (Fox)
So many choices. I'm tempted to go with AI. But, really, ignoring
"Chaotic" (which wasn't on long enough to bother with), it's got to be:

7th Heaven (WB)
Post by Joshua Kreitzer
WORST PERFORMER ON TELEVISION
David Caruso as Horatio Caine - CSI: Miami (CBS)
YOU WILL ALL PAY FOR THIS, YOU MISCREANTS!!1!

But any list that includes Maher is not to be taken seriously by anyone

Marcia Cross as Bree Van De Kamp - Desperate Housewives (ABC)
It isn't even a comedy! Ok, but I guess you can say her role in the
drama was comedic.
It wasn't. And I don't consider DH a "comedy" - I voted for it in the
drama categories.

But you have to work with what these guys give ya...

NO VOTE.
(The worst set of nominees ever in a SFTV category, IMO.)
And yet virtually the same as last year.
Last year, it included Evangeline Lily, so I at least had someone to
vote for.

This year? Bupkis!!

It's always been that way, though. If you go back and look at early
RATTYs, a good number of the nom. votes even back then were by people
who voted for the only 2-3 shows they watched in every category they
could.

If 'completists' like you don't bother to post your varied nom. ballots,
you're conceding the RATTYs to people who don't watch enough TV. Is that
what you want?...

The nomination ballot took me so long to do last year, particularly in
wracking my brains about the writing/directing nominations, that I sat
out the nominations this year. Maybe if there wasn't an entire SF
track -- and I like that it's there -- I could handle it, or maybe if
someone running the Rattys would, like, post a list of all the
writers, directors and episode titles on a web page, it'd be a whole
lot easier to do. Heck, it wouldn't even be a logistical problem if,
say, several of us were to divvy up the various series throughout the
year and send them to some central compiler. I mean, since I'm atgg's
FAQ-keeper anyway, that wouldn't be a problem for me wrt Gg and
perhaps 2 or 3 other shows, but I'd simply rather not have to deal
with flipping throuh imdb or tv.com or epguides.com just to find the
names of every director or writer that I want to nominate that's not
from Gg, The Office or Grey's.

Compiling the list of eligible shows was more than enough for me, and I
even received some complaints about the way I did that this year. I
have no objection if anyone else wants to organize a list of writers,
directors and episode titles, but personally, I'm not even planning to
compile the list of eligible shows for 2006-07. I am hereby privatizing
and outsourcing that task to anyone who is interested.

Dude, clicking through zillions of pages for even just two or three
series can take several hours to do using imdb and/or tv.com and their
clunky interfaces that only show one episode at a time. If epguides
had the writers and directors listed alongside the titles on their
episode list pages, compiling nominations wouldn't even take a *tenth*
as long for me as it does now.

I've decided I probably won't be taking the time to fill out the
nominations as extensively next year as I've done in the past.
That's fine. Because if there's one problem with the RATTYs it's that
too many people participate in the first round...
The nomination ballot took me so long to do last year, particularly in
wracking my brains about the writing/directing nominations, that I sat
out the nominations this year.
These are all important issues, so now let me offer these tips!:

1) Prioritize

If you take a look at my nom. ballots, esp. since the 90's, I've
scrupulously deepmpahisized the comedy categories. Why? 'Cos I just
don't watch much comedy. (Hence my votes this season for the tween shows
in Comedy - I knew they wouldn't get nominated, but they're the only
comedy shows I watch, and so made voting in the Comedy categories
possible this year. Most years, I leave those ones pretty blank...)

So focus your energies on the genres you do watch, and it should cut
down on the work load on the nom. ballot.

2) Don't Vote By Episode in the Writing/Directing Categories

We've been doing Writing/Directing Categories on a "by episode" basis
for years now. But, if you're pressed for time, there's nothing that
says you just can't nominate/vote the show itself, rather than the
individual episodes.

What will happen to votes like this is that they'll be like 'wild card'
votes that will count toward whatever the highest vote-getting
individual episodes are. Thus, they'll still count, but will save you
some work!

Well, unless you watch everything it should help. I watch an awful lot
but even I don't try to catch everything. Most of the comedies were
dropped from my viewing early on. About the only comedies I catch
regularly now are "Scrubs" and "My Name is Earl." I would have watched
"How I Met Your Mother" regularly but it was on against something else
I liked much better. Also they cancelled the other new comedy I really
liked, "Kitchen Confidential." I hope Nicholas Brendan and Bradley
Cooper can find a permanent home soon. They are too good to be without
one.

Then you have a much better memory than I do. I put down a few
specific episodes/writer/directors that I could remember, but most of
the time I couldn't think of specifics. Even if I had spent hours
poring over the IMDB I don't think I would have done much better.
So I settled for putting down the shows that I liked much like Ian
suggested.
