Discussion:
Write Newsrc Flags Setting in slrn
(too old to reply)

To get a full list of newsgroups, the slrn FAQ says to "modify your
slrnrc file to make sure write_newsrc_flags has its default setting." I
can't find that setting in the slrnrc file. Is it to be added to the
file, or is it there and I'm overlooking it?

I may have discovered the answer: the write_newsrc_flags variable is
applicable if slrnpull is used--and I haven't installed it.

Would still like to know how to get full list of newsgroups without the
use of slrnpull.

To check the settings of your .slrnrc file including the defaults:
slrn --show-config - then edit your .slrnrc where appropriate.

Dear gawd why?

I use my newsrc like a sane person to subscribe to specific newsgroups.
Once a week, the newsreader pulls both the active and newsgroups files
from the News server so I've got complete lists of newsgroups created on
the server but I don't store them in my newsrc!

I can't believe slrn can't do the same thing, or you just don't set up a
simple cron job to do it.

As the OP is posting from E-S is it possibly a case of not showing all the
newsgroups because E-S needs the client to force authentication?
(force_authentication=1 in .slrnrc)

Dear gawd why?
Because that is how the newsrc has always been? A list of all the
groups available which the ones you subscribe to denoted with a : after
the name instead of a !. Such was the case back in the days of rn, and
such it is now.

Yeah, it is such a massive amount of storage space. My newsrc is a
whole 1.2MB and takes up a significant portion of my 20TB of space.

Oh no, wait, I meant and entirely insignificant portion;; so small as to
me statistically 0. 0.0000006% of my disk space is "wasted" on a newsrc.

That flag is not set in slrnrc.

I used rn and now trn 4. rn-style .newsrc does not and never has
required a complete download. I just subscribe to a group that I want to
read, and if I don't know the sytactically correct name, I check the
active file that I've separately downloaded.

That's irrelevant. It could slow down processing. Why?

So, as you had downloaded all the newsgroups in a separated file, you did
the same as he did. So, what is so impressive ? The server he is using to
access the newsgroup has more newsgroup than yours ?

To download all the newsgroups take some time at the first launch. But
after it has the purpose to accelerate it, it's more efficient to look
in a local file than to ask for the server at each request.

Sure the list isn't there and you're just overlooking it?
Usually you should hit 'L' and then enter '*' and all
the newsgroups show up.

What number of lines of your ~/.jnewsrc and ~/.jnewsrc.dsc?

Maybe your .jnewsrc was damaged, you could start slrn and for
test create a new one

| slrn -f .jnewsrc_test_new --create

to if now all the newsgroups show up.

Cheers,

Thomas

Got the full list using: slrn -f newsrcfile --create
Thanks to all who replied.
