I would love for you to find some non-COLA made price comparisons looking at
Apple products vs. the competition. I used to track all the ones shown in
CSMA... but those are outdated by now.

I am not evading it. I have spoken about how it is an irrelevant comparison
where you look at two very different types of machines. I have encouraged
you to look for non-COLA inspired comparisons, and even shown you older ones
I compiled when people made similar claims in CSMA
(<http://csma.gallopinginsanity.com/prices>). At least at the time, while
people were making similar claims, the evidence did not back them. I looked
very briefly for Mac mini comparisons... did not find any. I would not be
surprised if it is higher priced than similar machines... it is getting long
in the tooth if nothing else. I expect an update soon. This is supported
here: <http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#Mac_Mini>. Add to that, I also
noted that if your needs are met with the PC notebook then it seems like the
better deal for you. Great. I do not think anyone is trying to convince you
otherwise so I am not even sure what point you think you are making.

But, I predict, you will ignore all of that and just troll. :)

Yes it is. Why does the Mac Mini give so much less than a notebook PC
even though it costs more? In the PC market you get more in a desktop
computer than in a laptop computer. In the Apple market, not only does
a Mac desktop give you less than a PC laptop, it costs more too!

Right... he compared two dissimilar machines and decided the more expensive
one was overpriced. I then did the same with the Mac mini and a Samsung
product and found the Mac mini to be much, much less expensive... something
like $39,000 less expensive. At that price it must be a steal.

Suddenly "Nobody" decided to wave his white flag and run off. :)

Try harder next time.
Nope. If anything, that gives a handicap to the PC.

The PC in the comparison is subject to an extra unecessary burden and
it STILL manages to beat the Mac. If you start talking about "desktops"
on the PC side then it only makes the Mac look even WORSE.

Yes it is. Why does the Mac Mini give so much less than a notebook PC
even though it costs more? In the PC market you get more in a desktop
computer than in a laptop computer. In the Apple market, not only does
a Mac desktop give you less than a PC laptop, it costs more too!
Because it DOESN'T HAVE THAT OH-SO-SPECIAL APPLE LOGO! What part of this
can't you understand?

I would love for you to find some non-COLA made price comparisons
Why do you want to evade the one in this thread?
That's an idiotic comparison. Notebook vs small form factor?
Your fellow troll -hh tells us everybody is replacing desktops with
notebooks, especially power users. Didn't you get the memo?

Besides that, the notebook I showed you is 0.3" THINNER than the "small
form factor" Mac Mini. LOL
Post by DFS
What's your problem?
I'm not the one with the problem. When I go shopping for a computer, I
don't constrain my comparison according to "form factor." I compare
what I get for the price. For $550 you can't even get a Mac Mini. Add
$50 to what you spend, and you get half of what's in a PC notebook if
you buy a Mac Mini.

Isn't that your contention?

But you are not going to answer any questions. Boring.

Comes down to this:
* You compared two completely different types of machines and noted one is
more expensive. This is not in contention.

* You then pretended this means the more expensive one is over-priced but
offered no comparison with a similar machine. You then ignored actual
non-COLA comparisons which show Macs are about the same price (though,
admittedly, they are outdated). No comparison with the modern Mac mini has
been shown.

* You keep working to change the topic - to what people not even involved in
the conversation you say said (who cares?), to what you like and look for in
a computer (not in contention), etc.

Get on topic and work to make a point or be ignored.

I carry around a separate CPU, monitor, and keyboard, or a laptop with
everything built in?"

For $550 you can't even get a Mac Mini.
So? For $10,000,000 you can't even get a good office suite on Linux.
Post by Nobody
Add $50 to what you spend, and you get half of what's in a PC notebook
if you buy a Mac Mini.
What kind of idiot compares a Mac Mini to a laptop?

Apparently because he didn't want to do a valid comparison based on an
actual use case which makes sense. Otherwise, its over before it starts,
because he's comparing different tools that are "similar" only because
of broad categories - e.g., comparing a a power drill to a nail gun
because both are often used in stickbuilt construction.

Its because he got whooped, so he thinks through this he can "win". Somehow.

Dude, it's not even worth it. Even if Apple hardware did cost a single
dollar more, the very fact that it allows you to use OS X (which in
itself isn't such a gigantic privilege) and gives you access to the
Apple ecosystem is worth that additional dollar. Knowing that pretty
much any hardware you use will work out-of-the-box is great. Knowing
that learning the operating system is incredibly easy is as well. As it
comes directly from Apple, you know that it will sleep and shut down
properly, that no ridiculous obscure settings will be required to get
things to work correctly and that screen tearing, if it exists, will be
suffered by the millions of people who bought the exact same machine and
fixed quickly (instead of denied as an issue by the only people with
sufficient knowledge to aid you).

GNU/Linux "advocates" are mediocre people with mediocre lives who accept
mediocrity by default. Apple users tend to be professional who can't
accept any compromise. You won't see successful novelists writing on a
GNU/Linux machine the same way that you won't see successful musicians
recording on an open-source platform. There's a reason for that.

I honestly have no idea how you managed to misspell a word that even a
two year-old can write properly. Either way, that $549 laptop most
likely comes with Windows 8 and a BIOS which enables UEFI. As far as I
know, even if you wanted to install a GNU/Linux distribution of your
choice on it to replace Windows 8, you might not be able to do it easily
and you especially might not know that you have to disable UEFI in the
BIOS in the first place (try to explain how to do that to one of the
retarded old fossils who hires JEDIDIAH). I think many of you
conveniently disregarded the whole UEFI vs. GNU/Linux controversy of the
past few years.

I didn't find the comparison interesting enough to look into what was
bundled with it. However, any computer with that low of a price
generally comes with Windows and it could be assume that its recent
release bundles 8.

So far this long, meaningless debate has concluded:

* One machine costs more than another dissimilar machine.

So what?

I see. I guess I missed "Curtis." Can't keep up with Snit's imaginary half-
life.
Yeah, it was obvious immediately that he wasn't a Linux fan. . It took
"Curtis" only a day to begin his descent, and the next day (yesterday) to
basically out himself as a long-time COLA troll, and not just a "one-hit
wonder". He doesn't sound like Snit, though. Sounds like some other
fscktard.

I hope you saved some of that Kool-Aide for Walmart Jeremy...
I haven't heard much from Walmart Jeremy lately. Which is kind of odd
because he was the AUTHORITY on all things tech. Wasn't he?
You now think Walmart associates are, by default, an "AUTHORITY on all
things tech". This shows how little you know.

Maybe Jeremy is working for Best Buy now.

Interesting. I was in Best Buy over the weekend as well and this
store had an entire kiosk, counter, set up for Google Chrome books.
They were quite busy but I did manage to ask a sales lady what Chrome
Book sales were like and she said very good. Lot's of parents buying
them for their kids.

They had a Samsung and Apple kiosk set up as well. Not as busy as the
Chrome section though.

On the bright side it does have a Thunderbolt port for those Thunderbolt
devices you don't have.
I would love for you to find some non-COLA made price comparisons looking at
Apple products vs. the competition. I used to track all the ones shown in
CSMA... but those are outdated by now.
<http://csma.gallopinginsanity.com/prices>
Dude, it's not even worth it. Even if Apple hardware did cost a single
dollar more, the very fact that it allows you to use OS X (which in
itself isn't such a gigantic privilege) and gives you access to the
Apple ecosystem is worth that additional dollar.
Well, if I knew someone looking for just a basic web surfing / email machine
and had to pick between those two I might very well go for the PC, esp. if
budget was a big consideration. But for your main point - yes, the value of
OS X is large and not factored into his comparison of very different
machines.
Post by Silver Slimer
Knowing that pretty much any hardware you use will work out-of-the-box is
great. Knowing that learning the operating system is incredibly easy is as
well. As it comes directly from Apple, you know that it will sleep and shut
down properly, that no ridiculous obscure settings will be required to get
things to work correctly and that screen tearing, if it exists, will be
suffered by the millions of people who bought the exact same machine and fixed
quickly (instead of denied as an issue by the only people with sufficient
knowledge to aid you).
No argument here.
Post by Silver Slimer
GNU/Linux "advocates" are mediocre people with mediocre lives who accept
mediocrity by default.
For the most part, yup.
Post by Silver Slimer
Apple users tend to be professional who can't accept any compromise. You won't
see successful novelists writing on a GNU/Linux machine the same way that you
won't see successful musicians recording on an open-source platform. There's a
reason for that.

Same holds true. Absent a hardware or some corrupted OS file iMac are just rock solid. Same holds true for most major mfg boxes these days.

Right. Macs also get hardware problems. Of course. And Apple will provide

Silver Slimer talked about a common issue - screen tearing - and was called
a liar over it.

JEDIDIA talks about a very rare issue... and the herd is silent.

OS X, Windows, and Linux only very rarely freeze in the absence of
hardware problems or corrupt OS files.
This is iMac, Apple hardware...
Same holds true. Absent a hardware or some corrupted OS file iMac are just
rock solid. Same holds true for most major mfg boxes these days.
"They're rock solid, unless they aren't, then we will make excuses."
[deletia]
The filesharing setup I have for my boxes would not be possible
to implement on a Mac without using the command line. When it comes
to fileshares and the standard GUI tools, MacOS is just too unreliable
...and it's pretty simple stuff really.
I'll call bullshit until you provide some proof.
Silver Slimer talked about a common issue - screen tearing - and was called
a liar over it.
JEDIDIA talks about a very rare issue... and the herd is silent.
The herd was afraid of me returning to the Snit camp. By yourself,
you're a logical user of technology who is able to prove whatever
statement he makes whether on technology or on politics with links and
videos. With me, the above is true AND there's suddenly an arrogant,
loud-mouth beast of a man very willing and able to confront them on
their hypocrisy and stupidity. The combination, whether friendly,
convenient or coincidental is extremely dangerous to a fragile
collection of "advocates" whose strategies of defending a pathetic
operating system are futile against the combination of your careful
analysis and my confidence and wit. Bullying me to stay on their side is
the only thing preventing the foundation of their glass house from
collapsing.

OK. Are you suggesting that OS X on Apple hardware never has hardware

Why are you asking that question, then?
Good greif you are slow. You noted problems that are almost surely related
to hardware. I noted this. You then said the hardware is Apple... as if that
somehow was in question or made a difference.

Do you get yet that freezes on OS X, Windows, and Linux are *generally* a
sign of hardware problems or corrupt files? Do a hardware test and if that
comes out clean re-install the OS.

Not hard.

Dude, it's not even worth it. Even if Apple hardware did cost a
single dollar more, the very fact that it allows you to use OS X
(which in itself isn't such a gigantic privilege) and gives you
access to the Apple ecosystem is worth that additional dollar.
Knowing that pretty much any hardware you use will work
out-of-the-box is great. Knowing that learning the operating system
is incredibly easy is as well. As it comes directly from Apple, you
know that it will sleep and shut down properly, that no ridiculous
obscure settings will be required to get things to work correctly

This shows your lack of knowledge. It does not take psychic powers to know
that for OS X, Windows, and Linux that common freezes are generally due to
hardware issues... or corrupt system files. There are other possibilities,
of course, but those are the most common things.

Well, if your user interface freezes... I've had X freeze up on me on
occasion (on Debian unstable, with VirtualBox running). So that even the
magic SysReq keys would not work.

Of course, usually you can still SSH in and fix/restart things.

on. I've yet to see any os that froze up, except dos.
Multitasking oses can have problems, but freezing up isn't one of them.
Well, if your user interface freezes... I've had X freeze up on me on
occasion (on Debian unstable, with VirtualBox running). So that even the
magic SysReq keys would not work.
I'd use the alt-F4 to see what was going on then.
The display is one area where if it stops responding you can't see what is
really going on. If it happens often enough, I'd be suspecting the graphics
card then. I've never had a bad graphics card tho, so never had that happen
to me.

Of course, usually you can still SSH in and fix/restart things.
That's true.

No, I know of the problem like that from experience.
You're only guessing his problem has the same cause as yours did.
What part of experience do you not understand?
The part where you think your experience gives you psychic power to know
a system freeze is due to hardware and not software.
This shows your lack of knowledge. It does not take psychic powers to know
that for OS X, Windows, and Linux that common freezes are generally due to
hardware issues... or corrupt system files. There are other possibilities,
of course, but those are the most common things.
...

I have - included OS X, Windows (XP and Vista and 7... not 8 so far), and
Linux. But it is very rare.

I've never even seen win3.1 or 95 ever freeze up. Of course back then I had
ECC ram on a mobo that supported that.

FUD. I have huge problems on iMac because of bugs in OS....
Computer freezed completely...
Sounds like either bad ram or a motherboard logic problem.
Is that what you heard when you held a seashell to your ear?

Guffaw!!! It isn't pyschic stuff, but a few decades of computer hardware
experience... something that you obviously lack.

Any UNIX system that has bad ram will give you a kernel panic.
Also, if the ram logic is bad the results will be the same.
Did he say he had a kernel panic? If you read his other posts, you
ought to know he said he solved it by killing a process.
Then it isn't a freeze up now is it.

I've had that same kind of problem on OS X by mistakenly setting the vi
history level to unlimited. After a couple of days the file that holds the
history starts to eat up the hard drive space and things start to get
slow... but at least OS X back then let you know that you are running out of
hard drive space.

A real freeze up means that the os couldn't run due to a hardware logic
problem or bad ram... and even then OS X will give some kind of warning.

But the OP said it froze up completely... which is a bogus claim considering
what will take place before that... a lot of messages giving him warnings.

Most likely. If you are getting OS X, Windows, or Linux to freeze a lot it
is almost surely a hardware issue.

I never said I liked OS X or thought it was perfect. However, I can
guarantee you that whatever caused the freezing was very well identified
by Apple and fixed quickly thereafter if the operating system was to blame.

This is almost always the case with Apple. They have excellent support. Does
not mean, of course, that they are perfect (far from it, really).
