Discussion:
RPi to power a model

I have a lego model of a z114 - it is powered by a raspberry pi.
It does run my neck of the woods flavour of op-system (DOS/VS, et al).

In case someone wants to run anything other (I.E. VM or MVS) on the RPi
or want to just control the lights on 360/165 from a RPi-

The Debian (with herc but most components removed) is little under 1G.

give me holler and I send the bare wheezy with just herc, everything set
up to connect to my android (when tethering switched on) and the home
wifi (and of course LAN) and start (and stop) a herc-guest.

Be warned: it is slow and it is only good for the fun of it. I do
everything for the model on the desktop- only the final stuff gets
installed in the "114" (i.e. control the two front lights that indicate
current state from within the herc-guest)

Tuntap has more requirements in Windows than in Linux. You don't mention whether
you installed winpcap and fishpack. You also need to ensure the first adapter
is the adapter you will be using. Hercules must also be RUN AS ADMIN in order to
access WinPcap.

Run TT32TEST (or TT64TEST) to see if you have your setup correct. It's output
is more useful than trying to find the problem in the Hercules log.

Thanks

I am very familiar with the setup requirements for windows

All things you mention have been met.

****************

This same set-up used to work .

But I had to shuffle things around and re-build and re-boot my machine

After the shuffle I now get this error

Very strange ( because I know for certain that the same set-up used to work )

That Is why I posted this request for help ( with the log )

I posted pertinent log messages which describe versions and the errors in question

If there are any additional debugging steps I should take to gather more "diagnostics" please advise

Steve,

Good to hear you have it working again.

Would you mind posting your TCPIP PROFILE and a brief discussion of how
your network is set up?

I have a few questions that I can't seem to tie all the pieces together.

I have never been successful in getting an FTP transfer from the guest back
to the Windows box. I can ftp up but not the other way (using a Filezilla
server in Windows).

I use a Microsoft Loopback adapter not my Windows NIC.

I have a second box running Ubuntu Linux and FTP works in both directions
using the tun adapter.

Thanks,

Wayne

I just discovered, I have the same problem you are currently experiencing. I do not think it is you network set-up. I think we
are having some type of routing problem. Maybe similar to what used to occur on windows xp where you ahd to install the ARP protocol drivers

Fish are you listening ?

I am having this problem on windows 2008 r2 x64

Out-going name resolution and out-going pings work. But incoming
pings are not answered.

Hi:

You must to disable the TCP and UDP checksum offload settings in the
hardware manager properties of your network card. Is a workaround solution
while Fish updates his fishlibs to a newer NDIS driver (Windows 2008 and
Windows 7 have newer than NDIS6.x drivers).

This fixes the routing problem.

Thanks,

Forgive my addled brain for being slightly foggy on my memories.

Yes, in fact I dealt with this before and forgot. After I searched back
thru the archives
I found my previous detailed thread discussion with Fish on this topic.

Steve,
Good to hear you have it working again.
Would you mind posting your TCPIP PROFILE and a brief discussion of
how your network is set up?
I have a few questions that I can't seem to tie all the pieces together.
I have never been successful in getting an FTP transfer from the guest
back
to the Windows box. I can ftp up but not the other way (using a
Filezilla server in Windows).
I use a Microsoft Loopback adapter not my Windows NIC.
I have a second box running Ubuntu Linux and FTP works in both
directions using the tun adapter.
Thanks,
Wayne

Tuntap has more requirements in Windows than in Linux. You don't
mention
whether
you installed winpcap and fishpack. You also need to ensure the
first adapter is the adapter you will be using. Hercules must also
be RUN AS ADMIN in order to access WinPcap.
Run TT32TEST (or TT64TEST) to see if you have your setup correct.
It's output is more useful than trying to find the problem in the
Hercules log.

Does this apply for a virtual/emulated NIC? ie the Microsoft Loopback Adapter.

These questions have been going on for years and I've never had a
successful configuration in any flavour of Windows. Linux, no problem.

So I'll try and ask again. Can someone post a complete configuration
and a howto on any routing that is necessary?

Thanks.

It would be great if a member of the Hercules groups could snap this one up. I wonder how much floor space would be needed???

I'm a complete newbie at hercules, and mainframe hardware... but I checked
the auction for this and it's not what I'd call "terribly expensive". But
- wouldn't the "harder part" be all the software that would need to be
gathered to run on this?

Thanks for putting up with the dumb question...

It makes me wish I'd hit a Powerball jackpot, George!
It would be great if a member of the Hercules groups could snap this one
up. I wonder how much floor space would be needed???

Well... First of all there were two bids when I looked just now, and
it ain't over til it's over. But that said, I don't think this pile is
worth a great deal today. Probably the tape drives are the most
valuable part in the commercial market, and maybe the 3174s for
hobbyists.

You are quite right about software; this hardware won't run anything
affordable except Linux. In particular, it won't run older free OSs
like MVS 3.8.

But in my view the biggest problem for most hobbyists will be
transporting it all. Unless you happen to live in Raleigh, it will
cost a bunch. And maybe even if you do live there, since these places
tend not to allow you to just rent a truck and drive it up; they often
want to see insurance and real movers and safety gear and such.

Hi:

Another issue here is that the auction comes with no DASD at all, so you
couldn't install any operating system on it, unless you use the system with
standalone programs, IPLing them from tape.

In my honest opinion, 2.500 $USD is a bit expensive for such a old system
(z800 has now 12 years old) and incomplete thing, but, then, if anyone is
interested, go ahead.

Everyone is correct in the ability to run anything really useful on this
configuration. I was thinking about taking some of the pieces such as
the tape drives, 3174's and the 2074 controller and using them apart
from the mainframe itself.

There was also another posting on that same site that had a somewhat
recent DS8000 DASD array with 20TB.

Just making information available in case others haven't seen it.

Bob, et alia:

If indeed it is your intention to run what might otherwise be considered a reasonably responsive instantiation of say, MVS 3.8 using Hercules on a computer platform that is palm sized, you may find yourself being quite well served by considering devices such as DreamPlugs and the like.

Hello!
I'm already running VM/370rel6 on my Raspberry Pi. As it happens the
only telling point was that of watching the activity traces on
something I have running on mine.

As it happens I've not had a chance to try out either DOS/VS or MVS
under VM whilst making use of Hercules (what else?) on a Raspberry Pi.
Only because I've not seen appropriate instructions for setting up a
guest via VM that way.

Hello!
Performance is on a par with my Intel rig.Or when running Hercules
here on this laptop. My only problem is with the Debian method of
installing things.

Indeed the routines for setting up a guest are rather difficult. In
fact there exists a prebuilt arrangement which contains the features
to support a guest.

What are the "routines for setting up a guest" ?

I don't have a PI, but shouldn't setting up a guest should be the same
regardless of the
platform ?

============== platform independent ?? ===========
1) Move / copy host "herc-dasd-cckd" files to appropriate directory

2) Modify hercules.cnf

3) Modify VM directory file
====================================

4) Run Hercules on PI

5) ??? Connect via tn3270 to PI over network ?? ... or does the PI
run X windows, and can the tn3270 emulator be run from it ?

It can run X-Windows or I guess you could run multiple ANSI type
consoles using LINUX virtual consoles. It even has a serial port so you
can have a real terminal running normal TN3270...

I have one (in fact i originated this thread) and I can tell: it is no
different at all....all I do is install herc; copy config files; copy
guest disks; run it.

I did not attempt to use the TUN or any other interface aside of the
tn3270

it is a model (this is just a reminder)

So the performance isn't bad?
I installed Hercules on various ARM based NAS - ranging from 0.5 to 1.2 Mhz.

According to various benchmarks I ran on them I can foresee a MIPS rate of 1.5-2.0 for the RPi.

As soon as I'll put my handa on one of them I'll publish all the benchmark results :).

Paolo,

when I start hercules from a console and use the esc key it shows
something between 0.7 and 0.9 MIPS when running 100% and it runs a lot
at 100% when starting debian (weezy) then z/VSE then CICS/TS

But it is only a model and it is just for fun.
