And a single cd: Babayan playing Rachmaninov is being released in two days - two tracks already on Spotify. I am looking forward to hearing all of it.

Any comments on Foldes?

So am I! I heard Babayan when he was a contestant in the Casadesus (now Cleveland) International Piano Competition, 1989. He was far and away the most musical, exciting contestant that year, and of course he won first prize. I have heard him in concert many times in Cleveland, although he has gotten into the Argerich-like habit of frequent cancellations.

I cannot believe it took this long for him to get a contract with a major label. His earlier recordings of Scarlatti, Liszt, Vine, Messiaen, and Ravel are worth seeking out.

Even weirder, he new Babayan release was recorded in 2009.

Doesn't appear they remastered anything, so yours are probably the latest masterings in the set.

I’m certainly happy they’re including your versions of those, Mark, but how disappointing that this isn’t an original jacket type set. The rest of the set seems to be merely a combining of the previous solo and concerto sets, which were not even complete for his lp era material.

I received the Kempff edition from Amazon UK Monday. Although I have many Kempff recordings, I bought this set to get the chamber music and mono Beethoven Sonatas set, along with the 78rpm recordings in one convenient package. Today, I stumbled onto something rather startling: there are eight bars missing from coda of the 1951 Beethoven Appassionata: The section where the sequence of galloping presto chords is heard twice in F minor, twice in A-flat major - is missing the repetition of the A-flat gallop!

I'm not familiar with the Kempff mono Beethoven sonatas, so I'm asking Kempffians out there: is this in the original recording?

Hank: I pre-ordered the Kempff box from Amazon UK on Sept. 28. It still hasn't shipped.
I wonder if DG discovered their mistake after the first batch - including yours - had shipped, and put a halt to new shipments.

I can always reorder it in a few months.
I do have a question about the completeness of the Kempff edition.
The old 35 CD box of Kempff Solo Recordings was missing five works that the pianist recorded for Decca in 1953-1955, but never re-recorded for DG:
- Bach: Chromatic Fantasia & Fugue in D minor, BWV 903
- Beethoven: Bagatelle (Presto) in C minor, WoO 52
- Couperin: Le carillon de Cithere
- Handel: Harmonious Blacksmith
- Rameau: Le rappel des oiseaux *
According to the Presto Classics list of contents, the Couperin, Handel and Rameau are included in the new 80 CD Kempff Edition, but NOT the Bach Chromatic Fantasia & Fugue BWV 903 or the Beethoven bagatelle WoO 52.
Can you confirm this?
The Presto listings are not always 100% accurate.

With a little more effort (and very few extra cds) this set COULD have had his complete LP era recordings. Never mind the 78 era, which is the expected hodge-pudge of old transfers that DG did (extremely poorly) for previous reissues, and Mark Obert-Thorn’s very welcome work (although I prefer to have them on APR with their annotations), yet NOT his transfers of the concerti (also for APR)....the inferior DG versions are included. DG admits they don’t even have holdings in their archives for a number of 78 issues. What a shame.

There are a number of omitted mono LP items that have been issued on Eloquence (Liszt’s 2 Legendes & several Brahms works including the Decca 1953 Intermezzi Op. 117 and 1950 Op. 79 Rhapsodies). Are the 2 mono Schubert Sonatas included (also issued by Eloquence)? They are D. 845 & 950. And why no “original jackets” format?? I could have swallowed that if this had been complete for LP material at least. There were also several alternate stereo issues of some of the “named” Beethoven Sonatas that may have been excluded as well.

I wonder what anniversary of Kempff’s will inspire a correctly done complete collection? Probably the 50th anniversary of the death of the last listener to remember who Kempff was, probably issued on a microchip to be implanted in our brains. What a cynical enterprise and missed opportunity this is.

I just compared Decca's Arrau and the mono Kempff from the
old sonatas box. Arrau has one theme repeated and then the
next theme repeated. Kempff repeats the first theme but
does not repeat the second theme. There is also about 10
seconds of silence before the next track.

Now that is interesting. In all the recordings I have of this piece (which must be at least 40) I've never heard of any pianist skipping that repeat before. Thanks for the info.

I just played that bit of the Appassionata from my late 70s LP reissue and that repeated 8 bars IS THERE! Wow, so this derives from the 1995 CD issue then? There’s no audible splice on the LP (aside from the one at the start of the Presto. Speaking of Arrau, there’s an editing mistake introduced only in the 80cd edition. It’s on CD 59, track 4 going into 5. The continuous segue has been chopped up with a pause before tr 5....this was not the case in the previous cd issues. I guess they never fixed it. In any case my question about it fell upon deaf ears. I wonder if this Kempff kerfuffle can be fixed? Maybe for the next anniversary edition in 25 or 50 years.....

This is the first Deutsche Grammophon CD release of the mono Beethoven Sonatas played by Kempff:
https://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Complete-Piano-Sonatas-L-V/dp/B0000012XC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1M6KD9O8FXVGW&dchild=1&keywords=kempff+beethoven+sonatas&qid=1604108999&s=music&sprefix=kempff+%2Caps%2C168&sr=1-1
There is no copyright date on the back, but since it was issued to commemorate Kempff's 100th birthday, I assume it was released in 1995.
Appassionata third movement in DG's first mono CD remastering from 1995:

The 8 bar phrase in the coda is played three times @ 4:49
Apparently all mono LP versions had it played four times, so the fault can be traced to the first CD remastering in 1995.
25 years passed and no one noticed it until Hank Drake. Congratulations!

Are there any additional solo recordings in the Wilhelm Kempff Edition box if I have The Solo Repertoire box, all the APR volumes, 1990s box set of DG mono Beethoven Piano Sonatas and Eloquence stand alone CD?

I believe I have all the Decca recordings he made from the "Decca Sound Piano Edition". Thank you.

Thar article is a total waste of time.
Mr. Mermelstein forgives DG for forgetting to include some recordings.
(I'm talking about LP recordings, not old Nazi 78s).
If he bought a new car, would Mr. Mermelstein forgive General Motors for forgetting to include some parts?

Even better than thet old 3CD DG box, you can find Kempff's 1950s mono Brahms, Schumann and Liszt on Australian Eloquence:

Incredibly helpful, thanks. Somehow those Eloquence volumes slipped by me.

So I'm wondering if you have all of the above and the
5 CD 1950's mono original masters Schumann/Brahms/etc.,
and the complete concerto set, what other Eloquence issues
are also needed to fill in the gaps?

One thing missing from the above is the mono version of the
Liszt Deux Legendes that is on a 2 CD Eloquence issue
along with a lot of duplicates:

Hank
I would not recommend the mono Beethoven sonatas...... he plays on some awful pianos (for me intolerable), I like the pre-war LvB...

The piano is problematic on the 1951 Appassionata - tinny, unevenly voiced, with very little power.

Interestingly the author of the liner notes, Gregor Wilmes, mentions that Kempff played Bechsteins exclusively until the Bechstein factory was destroyed during World War II, essentially switching to Steinway out of necessity. I'm not slavishly devoted to Steinway myself, but the absence of quality pianos in the post-war recordings until the mid-1950s is glaring.

Bechstein is often given credit on Polydor’s labels at this time, as on this https://www.discogs.com/es/Wilhelm-Kempff-Sonate-Op-13-C-Moll-Pathétique/release/13678899

DG is in no hurry to provide a complete list of contents of the Kempff Edition.
Europadisc has a more complete list than Presto Classical, but it still does not include recording dates or identify his colleagues:
https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/149035/Wilhelm_Kempff_Edition.htm
Also, it does not include the Bagatelle (Presto) in C minor, WoO 52 that apparently is included in the new Kempff Edition.

Hank
I forget where I read this, but apparently Kempff's goal was to play a smaller scaled Beethoven, so I wonder if he chose his pianos to accomplish this goal.

the problem is not 'smaller scaled pianos' but a badly tuned instrument.
BTW- he made a post-war live radio recording and the piano is gorgeous..

So am I! I heard Babayan when he was a contestant in the Casadesus
(now Cleveland) International Piano Competition, 1989. He was far and
away the most musical, exciting contestant that year, and of course he
won first prize. I have heard him in concert many times in Cleveland,
although he has gotten into the Argerich-like habit of frequent cancellations.
I cannot believe it took this long for him to get a contract with a major
label. His earlier recordings of Scarlatti, Liszt, Vine, Messiaen, and Ravel
are worth seeking out.
He does not look like a fashion model and his hair is to short.

Any comments on Foldes?
Soeren
For me, the Foldes box is too much of a muchness. He's almost always worth hearing in 20th-century repertoire, much less so in the "classics," imo. Technically reliable, ranging from solid to stolid. A good sampler is this previous DG issue: https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/8049188--wizard-of-the-keyboard. My favorite performances there are of the Kodaly pieces. YMMV, so if you like the Bach and Beethoven there you should consider the big box seriously.

Foldes/Gielen Bartok PC2 is by far the best version of the piece. In general, I prefer his Bartok to Kocsis's.

Are you perhaps thinking of Gielen/Sandor or Bigot/Foldes?

I have the former, not the latter.

There are many good recordings:

Sandor / Gielen
Fanradi / Scherchen
Anda / Fricsay
Kocsis / Fischer
Richter / Svetlanov

I don't know about "best."

Are you perhaps thinking of Gielen/Sandor or Bigot/Foldes?
<g> I was thinking Foldes and wasn't quite sure about the rest. Thanks for correcting the name of the conductor: Bigot instead of Biget.

I don't know about "best."
Yes, there are many good recordings, in particular Anda and Sandor. I like Foldes best. He has a great sense of rhythm and has a 'clean' or 'natural' piano sound.

Any comments on Foldes?
Foldes/Gielen Bartok PC2 is by far the best version of the piece. In general, I prefer his Bartok to Kocsis's.
Henk
Foldes/Gielen? I know Foldes/Bigot and Sandor/Gielen, but not Foldes/Gielen. Reference please. Foldes/Bigot is precise but plodding to my ears. The first movement should take off like a rocket! You probably know this over the top but insanely exciting version:
In the solo works, I appreciate Foldes' calm and steady approach more, but in the same vein I prefer Sandor (either set) to Foldes. You?

Many thanks for the link. Ranki is great, as always. I'm not quite sure if I like his Bartok. Somehow I associate this composer with strict tempi and dynamics, with complete control.
In general, I like Sandor better than Foldes, but not in Bartok.
Henk
"Rank is great, as always," but your not sure if you like
his Bartok. Can you see that statement needs clarification?
You're on a roll.

Someone's greatness is independent of my likes and dislikes. Wagner was a great composer, but I don't like his music. The performance of Bartok 2 to which Alan linked us is a great achievement (as can be expected from Ranki), but not to my taste. There is another version of the concerto on YT, also with Ranki/Kocsis, which I like more.

That's an interesting point, consistent with the "Philosophy
of the Arts" class I took 52 years ago. After hammering
away or a semester, our conclusion was that (we focused on
painting, but it applies to all art) "A good painting
satisfies certain, not necessarily specified, criteria about
what constitutes good painting." Like use of color,
balance, perspective.... What are the criteria for "great"
pianism?

What are the criteria for "great" pianism?
<g> Great pianists have attained a level of piano playing that is generally deemed to be higher than that of most others. On Pianostreet one would call it level 10 (tongue in cheek):

A start of answer to my question appears in one of the
comments: color, dynamics, not hitting wrong notes (is that
the same as technique?). Of course apropos another thread,
the State might include political correctness as a criterion.

I agree with AC. Foldes is terrific in 20th century music. His Stravinsky sonata is my favorite recording of this beautiful and, at times, very funny piece.
