Hello

I was wondering if anyone has tried to mod their model 100/102 with a backlit LCD and if they had any tips. I'm thinking about moding one of mine (Would be cool :'))
but want to gather as much about it as I can.

thanks

It would be very cool to do that but why wreck a perfectly good computer.
Get a head lamp, Its cheaper to get, its already made & engineered, and you
won't experience any downtime modifying your laptop.

Best of luck, and wishes

This is something that I thought about years ago. I
have the address for a company somewhere that makes
electroluminesent things for such an idea. The only
thing I don't want to bother with is taking off the
plastic thing that is stuck on the the back of the LCD
screen and thus maybe ruining the LCD. One could then
place an electroluminesent thingy on the back. The
LCD would then light up, the light would then reflect
off of the plastic covering on the computer hitting
the LCD and you would be able to view your screen with
no problem. I thought about this years ago but never
got around to doing it.

Try putting your strip across the top of the display at right angles
and on the outside. If you can get a strip that's 1/4" wide, that may
be enough, and you won't have to open the case.

IMO, there's no way to remove the back of the LCD without destroying
it. You could buy some extras from Club 100 and try doing it to them,
but I suspect your success rate will be very small.

Oh, there's a way to remove the back of the LCD. It's
just I'm in no hurry to do it. I know it can be done
because I used to do it to digital watches all the
time. The LCD on the 100 is much bigger thus more
(fragile) work which is why I'm taking my time getting
around to doing it myself.

Gentlepeople-

I am trying to debug why TSdos and desklink dont work very well for me. I
get somewhat random directories, the odd 'communication error' and
sometimes, it hangs.

Does desklink work well on windows2k for others? also, does it care if the
data is on a raid, or NTFS, or FAT?

I have tried it with 3 different machines, all the same results.

so, it's either
- cable
- software corrupted (desklink or dos200.co)
- compatibility?
- hardware problem on server

Any suggestions?

I have read the docs-- no mention of issues to look out for.

thanks, steve

Sounds like cable trouble to me. There's no issue with Windoze 2000. An
IRQ conflict is another possibility, in which case 'random' really isn't
random.

I assume you didn't inload a BASIC program file under a .DO file name
extension. Likewise I assume you didn't inload the textual equivalent of a
BASIC program under a .BA file name extension. If you did either of this,
it sets the stage for disaster.

Ron, yep agreed.

I tried an experiment- always the same hardware

config win2kserver+desklink on HDD 6.22dos+desklink on
FDD win2kserver+desklink on FDD

results pseudo working works
perfectly doesn't work at all

so, I think that win2k server must have some wrinkle that makes it not-work.

I'll probably use up some old hardware, and put together a 386/dos machine
with ethernet just to tie the tandy to the server.

thoughts?

thanks, Steve

Desklink does work on Win2k because that is what my
sister uses. I first tried out desklink on a friends
computer which has Win98 with a null modem cable
hooked up to it. We tried it out on his laptop first
then the PC. We found that we had to change the COM
port and you DON'T use Teeny.co to transfer files. If
you want to transfer files then use TS-DOS or
DSKMGR.CO. I found that when transfering files a
Model 100 will only show about 2 or 3 screens of files
the the ROOT directory on the PC. To solve this litte
problem I simply copied everything over to a directory
I call DISK100 and delete everything in the ROOT
directory. If I want to download something to the
Model 100 I simply copy what I need from the DISK100
directoy to the ROOT directory and access DESKLINK.
Also, I forgot to mention, I don't have my Model 100
hook up to my sister's PC because she doesn't have a
RS232 port on her computer. (Bummer) A friend of mine
came over and used the USB port to transfer files.
I'm using an older Tandy 1400HD to store all my Model
100 programs and files. :)

Gents-

I would assume that serial access via the memory locations and IRQs for COM1

Although I did not write the code,...so I could be wrong here.

On my relatively modern computer a usp-to-serial device insists on
configuring itself as com3. This is of no use with WP2DOS, which only
recognizes com 1 and com 2. I think that on modern computers that only have
a com1, the address space for com2 is occupied by the ps2 connector for the
mouse.

Most of the newer computers allocate the com port IRQs for
things like IR or internal modems.. The USB/Serial normally
takes the next available IRQ that is seen on the machine..
Therefore you may have to go into your BIOS and disable
things like the IR (InfraRed) or even the internal modem
if so equipped.

Good Luck

For those of you interested, I have worked out a simple solution to my
problem where Desklink wont run reliably on W2k server. This will probably
seem like overkill to most, but it works for me.

Goal: get the tandy 200 to be able to access storage, and have that storage
visible on the network.

Solution:
- use an old 386, configured with a single floppy, video card, 10bT NIC, no
keyboard, no monitor
- create a boot disk floppy that includes MS lanmanager software
- set up the 386 such that it boots with no keyboard and no monitor
- on boot up, activate the network, login, and mount a network folder
- in that folder, all the tandy related stuff is present (desklink, files
etc)
- start desklink from the mounted folder

This works very well so far, never malfunctioned in any way. So, by using
really old relatively useless stuff, I have solved my problem.

This seems easier than trying to debug my win2kserver!!

Just an FYI,

[ Desklink does work on Win2k ]
Yes it does. It works on all flavors of Windoze and it works on all flavors
of DOS.

[ we had to change the COM port ]
As long as the PC has a serial port configured as COM1: or as COM2: you're
in business with Desklink. Invocation for COM2: requires use of the /2
switch to steer for the COM2: port.

[ you DON'T use Teeny.co to transfer files ]
There's no technical reason why not. If you prefer to use TS-DOS,
DSKMGR.CO, FLOPPY.CO or other 'master' ware, that's fine. TEENY.CO is
'master' ware that works with DeskLink 'slave' ware just as well as any
other 'master' ware.

[ a Model 100 will only show about 2 or 3 screens of files the the ROOT
directory on the PC ]
This has nothing to do with DeskLink 'slave' ware. What you've noticed is a
limitation imposed by whatever 'master' ware you're using in the Tandy. At
one extreme is TS-DOS, for example, which imposes a 40 file name limit on
its files list. The D service of an O___ system is another extreme which
has no limit at all on its files list -- the Tandy screen scrolls onward as
needed, so hundreds of file names can be seen.

[ To solve this litte problem... I simply copy what I need from the DISK100
directoy to the ROOT directory and access DESKLINK ]
You're doing a lot on unneeded work and making life more difficult than it
must be. Instead, supply a 'dir' argument when you invoke DeskLink. That
way you need not copy or move any laptop files at all. You know which
laptop file repository you intend to refer to, \DISK100, \ROOT, or
\WHATEVER. So invoke DeskLink using the appropriate 'dir' argument via
DESKLINK DISK100 or DESKLINK ROOT or DESKLINK WHATEVER.

WP2DOS for the WP-2 is fat sensitive, so maybe desklink is too. Try running
it from a floppy disk under a directory named "root.". Floppy disks format
as fat 16.

I have not tested WP2DOS on Windows XP. I suspect it should work, sincw XP

Mr. Salty Bear,

Do you have some experience with the USB port? I am in process of
switching to a pc running w98 with a USB so I can use it for a digital
camera. I have been using the serial port via HYPERTERM on my older pc
running W95 to communicate with my M100. No software is needed on either
machine to do reliable transfers.

Can we do the same (or similar) using the USB port? (if it can be made to
be a serial port, why not?) I could then make a mini USB - RS232 plug
adaptor to poke into the back of the m100 and use the cable already
hanging out there from the pc USB port to connect with it. As it is, I
now use the cable from the external MODEM on the pc to hook via an
adaptor to the rs 232 port on the m100.

Anyway, the USB port seems to be a made for the job solution. If you have
specific information and/or experience, I'd like to hear of it.
thanks, rjs

Richard,

I don't know if you will be able to make a converter. You can buy them, I
did for another connection. I purchased my USB->RS232 connection at Radio
Shack, but I am certain they are available elsewhere. Another poster to the
group has reported that he cannot get his adapter to work because of
configuration problems. I did not experience any problems, and while
checking his statement out I learned that my internal modem is configured
for com3, IRQ18. I don't remember doing this so I expect that XP, the os I
am using did the reconfiguration for me. As an alternative purchase, if your
PC does not have a spare com port you might investigate buying a card with
RS232ports to add to the machine. You can use the same port designation as
your modem since it is unlikely that you will be transferring files from the
M100 and surfing the internet at the same time.

My PC has two serial ports available and I use one of them for the M100 to
PC connection, using an identical set up to the one you are currently using.
I have used a com port and Hyper terminal, or another terminal program, on
DOS, OS/2, Win 3.1, 95,98, and XP. Works great for me.

Thanks for asking for the help, hope I haven't confused you to much.

There was a company at one time that provided modified LCD displays
for the model 100 that were backlit. I remember seeing their ad
in one of the old magazines. I am 100% sure that they existed.
I also remember that they were expensive. I think the cost to get
the retrofit was something like $800.

On my sister's 100 we tried DSKMGR.CO and
it works beautifully!
That's odd. My system regularly crashes when using DSKMGR, resulting in
complete data-loss. I tought it was because DSKMGR was written for the
TPDD(1) and DESKLINK emulates a TPDD2. Could that be ? Anyway, good that
you're happy with it. I won't use DSKMGR any more, I go for the size and
stability of TEENY, even though its bare interface sometimes drives me
crazy.

Yes it does. It works on all flavors of Windoze and
it works on all flavors
of DOS.
I have dedicated an old 486, equipped with a 40 MB HD with DOS, and starting
DESKLINK by default. Without a keyboard or screen (tweak the BIOS) I have an

[ you DON'T use Teeny.co to transfer files ]
There's no technical reason why not. If you prefer
to use TS-DOS, DSKMGR.CO, FLOPPY.CO or other
'master' ware, that's fine. TEENY.CO is
'master' ware that works with DeskLink 'slave' ware
just as well as any other 'master' ware.
RIGHT!

No, DeskLink emulates a TPDD(1).

DSKMGR may have the trait of displacing the current "NoName" BASIC program
whenever you load a BASIC program file. Under certain operating conditions
this trait can cause havoc. Some 'master' ware has this trait: TEENY.CO
does not, perhaps DSKMGR does and it caused problems for you.

I use TEENY because it's so small and stable. I tend to keep a lot
of files in my 102, so the DOS should be tiny.
#1. Depending on the capacity of RAM which is equipped in the laptop, the
maximum Free quantity is: 13521 for 16K capacity, 21713 for 24K capacity, or
29905 for 32K capacity. That's right, a maximum of 29905 bytes Free in a
32K Model 10x laptop -- not 29638. See [
http://www.club100.org/library/doc/ramabout.html ] for detail.

#2. Minimum consumption of RAM using Teeny is 754 bytes: 747 bytes of
latent image in the HIMEM region, 7 bytes for a Trigger file in the named .C
type files region. See "Trigger File Creation" section of TEENY.CO manual
for detail.

By use of BASIC statement MAXFILES=0 to eliminate all outer File buffers
(#1) and keeping a Trigger file for invocation of the latent image of Teeny
(#2), the available Free quantity is 29151 (29905-754). Within a capacity
of 29151 you can keep a lot of files in RAM. Or, you can keep one extremely
large file in RAM that no 'master' ware other than Teeny can handle.

Mr Salty Bear,

BTW the adaptor I made for the pc to M100 is neat enough to share the
details. I took a D25 socket and JB Welded a single telephone socket to
the back of it with pin 1,2,3,7 and then jumpering 6 to 8. I took another
two outlet telephone socket and JB Welded it to the back of a D25 plug
hooking up 1327 on one telephone socket and 1237 on the other. That way,
if I got the wires crossed, all I had to do was change sockets. Now to
connect the pc to the m100 all I do is unplug my external MODEM and plug
the cable to my adaptor - then plug the other adaptor into the m100 -
hook a four wire standard telephone hook up cable of any convenient
length between the two and we are off. I had a friend help put a shortcut
to Hyperterm on my desktop and I can load files anyplace I want 'em in a
single pass.

thanks for your comments, I may try that USB thing. Oh, that Radio Shack

Your adapter sounds great. I just use a null modem adapter on a one end of
a RS232 cable here. Have not used external modem since my Apple II days.
Have a bunch of PC's laying around here, and any of them that were actively
used by me have an internal modem in them.

It is full size USB Male on on end and DB9 Male on the other. There is a
sealed box in the middle that I assume contains a UART of some sort.
