Following a year’s strenuous labor of assembling more than 60 tiny
segments, written in a secret code, Dr. Eshbal Ratson and Prof. Jonathan
Ben Dov of the Department of Bible Studies at the University of Haifa
succeeded in reconstructing and deciphering one of the last two out of
about 900 Qumran scrolls. Their reward was another encounter with the
unique 364-day calendar of the Judaean Desert sect, as well as the
identification—for the first time—of the name given by the cult members
to the special transitional days between the four seasons.
Most of the Qumran Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in the 1940s and 1950s
have already been restored and published. Among the small “mosaic”
pieces, some of them smaller than a square centimetre, which remained
without a qualified reading, there were about 60 pieces of parchment
written in a coded script.
An earlier researcher who studied the passages claimed that they
belonged to a number of different scrolls. Now, with the interpretation
of Dr. Ratson and Prof. Ben Dov, in a study funded by the National
Science Foundation (ISF) and published in the Journal of Biblical
Literature (A Newly Reconstructed Calendrical Scroll from Qumran in
Cryptic Script), it turns out that they are all parts of a single scroll.
Now there remains only one scroll that has not been restored and
published, and the two researchers are working on it, too.
The Qumran sect were an extremist Jewish group that left Jerusalem and
suffered persecution by the ruling establishment between 200 BCE and 100
CE. They wrote many manuscripts on leather, papyrus, and copper, the
best-preserved and most famous of which include an Isaiah Scroll; the
Rule of the Community (also called the Manual of Discipline); The War of
the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness, or War Scroll; a scroll
of thanksgiving hymns; and a commentary on Habakkuk.
The fragmented scroll that’s just been deciphered deals with the sect’s
unique 364-day calendar, which represents a major dispute with the
rabbinic tradition: the Jewish calendar is based on the cycles of the
moon, which the rabbis adjusted to fit the solar calendar – to meet
Torah requirements such as Passover falling in the Spring and Sukkot
during the autumnal harvest season. To that end, the rabbinic calendar
introduced a 19-year cycle that includes leap years with an extra lunar
month, to synchronize the lunar and solar cycles.
The Qumran calendar used a 364-day system, perfectly divided into 4 and
7, with each holiday falling on the same day of the week each year. The
Haifa U. researchers speculate that this reflected the sect’s notion of
perfection.
The fragmented scroll lists the main dates according to the sectoral
calendar, with two unique festivals that were not mentioned in the Torah
but are cited in the Qumran “Temple Scroll” as the Wine Harvest and Oil
Harvest festival. They were an extension of the Shavuot festival, which
celebrates the wheat harvest. According to this calendar, the wheat
festival took place 50 days after the Shabbat that followed Passover,
then, 50 days later, came the wine harvest festival, and another 50 days
later the oil harvest festival.
The Qumran calendar also includes celebrations of the changes of the
seasons, a special day for each of the four seasons, which the calendar
calls Tkuffah (period), a term being used in later rabbinical literature.
The newly deciphered scroll also sheds light on the customs of the
scroll writers. It turns out that whoever wrote the scroll—probably one
of the leaders of the sect who knew the secret code—forgot to mention
some of the communal dates, and another writer had to correct his
mistakes, adding the dates to the spaces between columns.
The scroll also mentions a number of words and expressions which later
appear in the Talmud, a testimony to the fact that the sages were using
an ancient vocabulary that developed in the Second Temple period."

been human beings, in the baboon category, for at least three hundred
thousand years. There is less distance between the man-ape and the

ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA: Julian (Latin: Flavius Claudius Iulianus
Augustus[a]; Greek: Φλάβιος Κλαύδιος Ἰουλιανὸς Αὔγουστος; 331/332 – 26
June 363), also known as Julian the Apostate, was Roman Emperor from 361
to 363, as well as a notable philosopher and author in Greek.
A member of the Constantinian dynasty, Julian became Caesar over the
western provinces by order of Constantius II in 355, and in this role he
campaigned successfully against the Alamanni and Franks. Most notable
was his crushing victory over the Alamanni at the Battle of Argentoratum
(Strasbourg) in 357, leading his 13,000 men against a Germanic army
three times larger.
In 360 Julian was proclaimed Augustus by his soldiers at Lutetia
(Paris), sparking a civil war with Constantius. However, Constantius
died before the two could face each other in battle, and named Julian as
his successor.
In 363, Julian embarked on an ambitious campaign against the Sassanid
Empire. The campaign was initially successful, securing a victory
outside Ctesiphon, but during a skirmish Julian was mortally wounded,
leaving his army trapped in Persian territory. Following his death, the
Roman forces were obliged to cede territory in order to escape,
including the fortress city of Nisibis.
Julian was a man of unusually complex character: he was "the military
commander, the theosophist, the social reformer, and the man of

on fate and virtue that appear throughout the later works, especially
the Mystery. Yang Hsiang clearly demanded that the reader attempt this
reconstruction, rather than rest content with fragmentary
pronouncements. What are we to make of Yang's Hsiung's initial
statement that 'preservation and loss, life and death' are exempt from
MING (ie. the decree of HEAVEN as conveyed by the nine planes of the
Grapple HOMOIOTIC noumenon), especially when we recall that these same
four areas are specifically associated with MING in the canonical
Analects attributed to Confucius. it seems that Yang Hsiang wished to
challenge his reader, as if he knew that the text can only really teach
when it fails to say what we expect it to say; partial truths in obvious
conflict are then reexamined, so that a new unitary truth can be
established.

Turning to specifics, the Mystery depicts four major factors affecting
the COURSE-trochos and quality (as NATURE-genesis which is also conveyed
by the biblical notion [James 3:6]) of a person's life, though it never
groups all four together in a single passage. The four factors to be
treated are:

The first notable thing about this list is that Yang reserves *MING* for
Time alone, although some early Chinese thinkers loosely viewed all four
factors as aspects of *MING* insofar as *MING* may simply refer to the
quality of human life. Once we understand the significance of Yang's four
factors, this will assume considerable importance.
Elaborating somewhat upon these terms, Virtue refers mainly to the
roster of traditional Confucian virtues (among them, filial piety,
honesty, loyalty, and modesty). Yang also follows Confucian tradition in
making the ritual act virtually synonymous with Goodness since ritual
provides the form in which Goodness can be actualized. (For more on
ritual, see Key Terms.) For Confucians, ritual is the single mode of
behaviour capable of fostering necessary social order while satisfying
our most basic human needs for beauty and communication. In Yang's
writing, however, we also meet newer terms like "cautious watchfulness"
and "timely action," associated most often with earlier writings of
those very Taoists and Legalists he loved to refute. Such catchwords can
be justified in Confucian terms since even the best ritual requires
proper timing to promote the common good. Finally, as a committed
Confucian, Yang Hsiung believes that Virtue lies within the grasp of
each and every human being, though lamentably few may choose to pursue
its course.

Take Göbbels, for example. He married a Protestant. At once he was put
under the Church's ban. Very naturally, he declared that he would stop
paying the ecclesiastical tax. But the Church doesn't see things that
way. Exclusion is a punishment, which does not remove the obligation to
pay the tax!
For my part, the Church held it against me that I was a witness to this
marriage. They would certainly have put me under the ban, too, if they
had not calculated that it might have won me new sympathies.
Every marriage concluded as the result of a divorce is regarded by the
Church as living-in-sin. The result is that, in Austria, for example,
nobody cares about the commandments of the Church. From this point of
view, Austria was in advance of Germany.
The most extraordinary divorce story I know is that of Starhemberg. The
Church allowed him to obtain a divorce for a payment of two hundred and
fifty thousand schillings. The reason advanced, by agreement between the
parties, was that the marriage was null and void since the contracting
parties had come together with the firm intention of not performing
their marital duties.
Since Starhemberg had no money, the sum was paid by the Heimwehr. What
hasn't the Church discovered as a source of revenue, in the course of

unfrocked can build a new career for himself. What gave the power of the
Church such a handle was the fact that the civil power didn't want to
interfere in these matters at any price. Things have changed a great
deal since then. Nowadays great numbers of priests are forsaking the
Church. Obviously, there's a hard core, and I shall never get them all.
You don't imagine I can convert the Holy Father. One does not persuade a
man who's at the head of such a gigantic concern to give it up. It's his
livelihood I grant, moreover, that, having grown up in it, he can't
conceive of the possibility of anything else.
As for the nuns, I'm opposed to the use of force. They'd be incapable of
leading any other life. They'd be without support, literally ruined.
*IN* *THIS* *RESPECT*, *THE* *CATHOLIC* *CHURCH* *HAS* *TAKEN* *OVER*
*THE* *INSTITUTION* *OF* *THE* *VESTAL* *VIRGINS*. As soon as a girl
