Gary U.S. Bonds – “Quarter To Three”
HIT #1: June 26, 1961
STAYED AT #1: 2 weeks

“Quarter To Three” sounds like chaos. The song opens with muffled crowd noise and a bandleader counting off the beginning of a song. It’s not a live recording, but it sounds like one — and not even like a good one. It sounds like an amazing party happening down the street — wild, frenzied, mysterious, its sound obscured by what might as well be a couple of sets of walls. In any era, it’s crazy that a record this lo-fi managed to hit #1. In the pre-Beatles era where labels were pushing cleaned-up teenage dreamboats, it seems especially strange.

“Quarter To Three” is both for dancing and about dancing. Gary U.S. Bonds, the Florida-born and Virginia-based singer behind the song, roars out, “Don’t you know I danced, I danced till a quarter to three / With the help that night of Daddy G.” Daddy G is Gene Barge, the saxophone player who co-wrote the song and who honked frantically all through it. (It’s not the guy from Massive Attack.) So “Quarter To Three” is self-promotion, too: Come see this band! They will keep you dancing until late at night!

There’s a story, probably apocryphal, that the band didn’t even know they were recording the take of “Quarter To Three” that ended up at #1, that someone had hit record by mistake. The song is so rough and murky that it’s almost believable. But its rough murkiness is part of the appeal. So is the riotous energy. The one thing that comes through more clearly than everything else is Bonds’ voice, a joyous zero-subtlety bray. It’s not a graceful song, but it’s a hard and immediate one.

I saw Gary U.S. Bonds live, I guess it was in the 90s or 2000s, might
even have been at UGHA????? Anyhow he wasn't, at that point, very fond
of Springsteen, who, I think he believed, had gypped him. He made a
brief disparaging comment on stage.

Google tells me that the "new" Daddy G is named Grantley Marshall and
was a founding member of this British group Massive Attack, but I
couldn't determine whether he too plays the saxophone. There was a
picture of him singing. He's cute.

I may have written this before here, if so, apologies. I interviewed Bonds in 1980, a few weeks before the “Dedication” album was released. He was high on Bruce. After we finished and shook hands I added, “BTW, what exactly do you say in the background, during the intro to “Quarter to Three?”
He just smiled and walked away!

It was Little Steven that really liked Bonds, but whatever ...

I'm surprised he didn't mention how Dion ripped off the song for "Runaround Sue". Maybe that's something everybody already knows, but not mentioning it is like ignoring the elephant in the room.

how did Dion rip it off, other than using a chord pattern used by thousands of other songs?

I think he means that the Dion chorus sounds like the Bonds intro.

Unless there's another version of it, yes. All that happens is that the guy feels up the woman through her clothes at times. It certainly would not cause any furor here and would be shown with no problem on MTV and channels like that.

First of all for most of its chart run the record was credited simply
to "U.S Bonds" as his previous records ("New Orleans" and "Not Me")
had been. Later pressings added the "Gary" but it wasn't till his next
record ("School Is Out") that the "Gary (U.S) Bonds" credit became
standard.

The wonderfully raucous "Quarter To Three" was simply a revamp---with
lyrics added ----of Daddy G (Gene Barge)'s "A Night With Daddy G" as
by the Church Street Five also on Legrand from a few months earlier.
All of which names are credited in the song of course.

I totally fell in love with the record and completely wore out the
first copy I ever had. It appeared on Top Rank label here and got a
lot of airplay---mostly on Luxembourg since the BBC played it as
little as possible---and then only through gritted teeth. Definitely
not our kind of record, old chap sorry. But it sold pretty well here
regardless, rising to #7 on the NME chart

And it totally DOMINATED the 1961 Singles Battle as witness :-

Was channel-surfing earlier this evening and came in part way through
the dire 1962 British musical "It's Trad Dad" (which was being shown
as "Ring-A-Ding Rhythm" it's US title)

As well as a host of boring UK trad jazz acts of the time (Acker
Bilk,Kenny Ball etc) the movie contains footage from some US acts
including Chubby Checker,Del Shannon,Gene Vincent and the man who is
the reason I'm posting this in this thread.

Yes,one of the few highspots in a dismal movie is the then-visitng

“Quarter To Three” sounds like chaos. The song opens with muffled crowd noise and a bandleader counting off the beginning of a song. It’s not a live recording, but it sounds like one — and not even like a good one. Very informative. I'd heard of Bonds and "Quarter to Three," but I never heard the song until this year when I bought a compilation CD containing it. I thought I got cheated: that they'd slipped on some bad live version instead of the original single. But from the above, it looks like that was the original single.
