The U.S. Border Patrol is kicking off a hiring spree open to women
recruits only, aimed at rebalancing the gender ratio of its ranks.
We want to diversify, agent Tim Hamill, a spokesman for the Border
Patrol in San Diego, said at a press event Monday.
This recruitment phase does not have a target number of women hires,
Hamill said.
The first cohort of female agents joined in 1975, Hamill said. Since
then, women have remained a small minority. Currently, about five
percent nationwide, or 1,039 agents this fiscal year, are women. At
most other law enforcement agencies, the average is 16 percent women,
Hamill said.
