And I pinched Hesky's idea for Alex's funeral.
Alex too was played out to Barwick Green.

Strange. I remember Peter's posts, and yet the earliest post from me
(that I can locate) is from three years later.
I must have lurked for rather longer than I thought.

Gosh, I hadn't thought about it but I found umra 21 years (and a couple of
months) ago. I'm pretty sure you were already here, Jenny, or returned
after an absence soon after.

My first post was 29 May. I hadn't "had the intenet" for many weeks
then. Part of the package from Demon, including Turnpike, was some
information about newsgroups. Not sure exactly how I discovered Umra in
particular.

Ooo, I've just found my first post, 14/4/1998. I missed an apostrophe which
led to a wonderfully umratic swerve about M&S selling donor sperm with this
from George Middleton:

"Jean and I have been chuckling over this thrust of wit. Discussing where
the product would be displayed, and how they would claim that their
staff have been specially trained in giving advice to anyone unsure
about using it for the first time. Where would they get it from? I'd go
along with Garrison Kieller on this and get it only from clean
Norwegians. I suppose eventually there would be a cheaper line with the
small-print, "Contains sperm from more than one country."

Then the tv adverts. Happy family, mum, dad, at least two flaxen haired,
blue eyed children, all laughing and loving each other. Mum (Linda
Bellingham? No, too old, Caron Keating?) slides this rounded end phial
containing a pale blue liquid from its M&S packaging and says quietly to
pop (somebody weedy, Philip Franks?), "Is it time for another?" "

alt.usage.english used to be like that. I learned a great deal from some
very well-informed people and have made some wonderful and enduring RL
friendships there. Sadly, many of the most engaging contributors have
given up in the face of some very difficult people who just want to
argue. Umra is far more friendly these days.

That we do seem to be expert at! Though I suspect other friendly ones do
too: certainly, of the ones I take, uk.tech.broadcast and the Windows
ones (98, XP, and 7) do have swerves. And I think APIHNA did before it

I've heard it said - mainly on here, I think - that the Corrie one is
similarly friendly. APIHNA certainly was, UTB is.

tolerance with pedantry and
And that. And some excellence in pedantry - including humorous
clamping-with-glee on mistakes. (APIHNA - as you might expect - was/is
appreciative of pedantry - not just of its nominal, but also other cases
that trigger it, such as PNS syndrome and alarmed barriers.)

Not just tolerance, but appreciation - and I think great skill! (Not

I was a late arrival at the Umratic ball, my first de-lurk being in September 1999, after
which I properly delurked to talk about Marmite at the Genevan Escalade, in November 1999.
The dorter was 4 and singing Savoyard songs. She is now 24 and studying for a Manchester
Master's.

I was even later, delurking about six months after your debut. I had
been lurking for two or three years though and, when I first found umra,
the main topic of conversation was the BBQ (I forget whether it was then
imminent or had just occurred) in 1997, IIRC.

Go to Goggle Gropes and look for messages from you in <insert a likely
period here, for example "01 January 1998 - 31 December 1998>. If
nothing is found, search a later period and if something is found near
the start of the period move back a bit.

That's how I found my first post when looking for it a few years ago. I
then made a diary note!

The first post I've _saved_ is dated 1995-11-5 (from John Bray with a
compulink address on where to get shipping forecast teatowels!). The
sixth is "Welcome to umra 1.0" dated 1996-5-10, and says it is an
informal FAQ. It's rather fun; was then maintained by three people with
ox.ac.uk addresses. The first names I recognise as still current are -
is Chris Harrison of summaries fame still here (1996-10-31)? - if not
then Chris McT, 1997-6-10. (These aren't the first from these - just the
first I've saved.) [The first I've saved from me is 2008-4-20, but of
course I wouldn't normally save my own - Turnpike saves a copy of every
post and email, but I clear those out occasionally. I would have been
posting from soon after I started taking, which I think was within days
of creation.]

Gosh, I hadn't thought about it but I found umra 21 years (and a couple of
months) ago. I'm pretty sure you were already here, Jenny, or returned
after an absence soon after.
I thought I joined in February 1999 but am unsure how to search to find
my first message.
I found my first ever message on Usenet (in alt.usage.english on 2 Nov
1997) via Google Groups.
Searching umra on your name and 1999, this looks like the first thread

You can edit that link to change brritski to whatever handle you were
using when you joined umra, or in the "search for messages" box at the
top of the page, you can click on the little down arrow icon and a whole
panel drops down where you can search for all kinds of stuff. I added
the date that I thought I started before and then put my handle in the
"has the words" box. I tried in "Posted by" but that didn't seem to work.

I failed to find the advanced search which used to be easy to locate.
I just tried the search box at the top with "by:Penny" which didn't work
but "by Penny" did.

Well, I'm nuggered if I can get it to work. I think I joined umra
around 1997, but I can't remember and my earliest posts are saved on an
old, defunct machine. I've tried every combination I can think of in
Google Groups but it either seems to show all my posts or no results.
Is there any way of sorting them by date but with earliest first?

I'm sure Google Boodeley Groups is deliberately obfuscating searches in

In 2014 Giganews was boasting that it had now broken through to more
than 2000 days of
retention.https://www.giganews.com/2000-days-retention/ and from the
upbeat tone of the article I imagine that figure is higher now.

Same with me. I started as ***@yell.almac.co.uk.time (sig: take time
out to reply) and I'm sure it was sometime in the second half of 1997
which was the Year I Became Connected. I was working with the Glasgow
International Early Music Festival at the time, and we signed up to a
jolly Scots ISP which asked you to choose a Scottish island to be
e-domiciled on. Hence 'Yell'. I seem to remember this being remarked
upon at the time but can't find anything of mine earlier than 1998. If
you just search u.m.r.a there seem to be posts going back into 1997, but
nothing of mine.

Well, there is another thread from a little later the same day (related to
the last night of the Proms and the funeral of Princess Diana) in which
TNMF queries your Yell email address which he says he hasn't noticed
before.

In the same thread I found Niles using his full given name and signing off
as AJF, so guess it was his early days here too.

in date order with latest first. I had to scroll back and it would go

Earliest I can find for you, Vicky, is

Is Daniel played by a child actor? Or a grownup trying to sound like
a child? I don't know any kids who sound so sickening."

on Christmas Day, 1998.

I think this, from 04 Feb 1996:

Thank you very much Robin, and I'm sorry I upset you Ian, perhaps I may
appease your feelings just a little:
Whilst 'surfing' on CADVision's Living City for our young daughter, I
came across a 'find the duck' game; there are various pictures in this
game with a duck hiding in each. You may wonder whey I raise this in
umra... well.
just try: http://aurora.york.ac.uk/cgi-bin/ducks.sh?2 and also the same
ending in ?5. Perhaps the more avid readers will be able to tell me the
names behind the faces please.

Following your sig, with e-mail and snail-mail addresses, was "If
Computers are such clever things... how come mine can't speel
(or format)? S-O-R-R-Y!!!"

And Vicky, sorry, I've now got you back a bit further, to 12 Sep 1998:

"Isn't Greg going to fall for Debbie? And Brian and Jenefer will be
cross because he is an employee and not good enough?

And don't call Caroline a bike! You didn't call Brian one. Sexist
pigs!

This is my delurk by the way :)

I love the suggestions for Shula being killed. I just read the group
for the first time today.

Niles has been saying look at it and also on other groups where the
Archers keep creeping in people who read this suggest the discussion
moves over.

What about Alastair and Usha? That would serve Shula right..or usha
decides to help Roy bring Baby up and they get custody?"

You will notice that this was DEFINITELY your first post!

Oh yes. Thank you :). I see I read for the first time and posted at
once. Not someone to observe quietly first! But I'd been chatting
online, on IRC and news places, since beginning on Prestel when we got
the first modem in 1987. The news places were on bulletin boards that
exchanged groups with each other,. And some ran on-going games too.

I found it difficult but did a search* on “Goggle Groups
uk.media.radio.archers”. From the results I chose one site but it only went
back sixteen years. Then I found the proper GG one and did a search on my
name. The earliest post I could find was 9.6.96 but I don’t think it was my
first. The date order is very muddled, so it took nearly an hour to find
that one.

*Not on Goggle, which I don’t use.

We moved away from the house with an Aga when I was 12 so I'd only cooked
eggs, toast and drop scones on that (and boiled the enormous kettle).

There was a similar (but oil-fired) stove - I forget the make - in the
house we rented for a year when we first moved to Wales. I loved cooking
on/in that and, unlike the solid fuelled Aga I grew up with, it was very
controllable and through the summer it was no trouble to just light it up
when you wanted to cook. This was just as well because it cost a fortune to
run through the winter when it was supposedly also heating the house. Or
maybe it just felt that way because the oil bill had to be paid in a big
lump when the tank was filled.

When my daughter was born we were living in a bedsitter with
kitchenette. In the main room we had an Esse. Was that the
poverty-stricken (wo)man's Aga?!

(Unfortunately we had to stop using it because it was quite expensive to
run and the flat upstairs could and did access our hot water but weren't
prepared to pay for doing so.)

Birthday News for today, 4 June: Peter Hesketh RIP (last post 08/00)

Peter was the first person I met at the Umra Sunday in 1999 - a year
after John went tractor rolling. Others present included Min, Rosie,
Gid and Suzie. I don't recall who else was there.

That was just a few months before I changed jobs. It's was 20 years
at Spring Bank Holiday since I started work in Dav.
