Here's what iPeng users have been waiting for since 7.4 showed up:

I'm are happy to announce the availability on the App Store of iPeng
1.2.

iPeng 1.2 is the third major release of iPeng and like 1.1 it will
bring you major changes that will make iPeng an even better Music
Remote.
Optimized for Squeezebox™ Server 7.4

To begin with, iPeng 1.2 is a complementary release for Squeezebox
Server 7.4 and MySqueezebox.com. It fully supports these server releases
and in many places also uses similar UI concepts.
In short: Here's what's new:

* New Look and Icon
* New User Interface handling ambiguous functionality through
context menus instead of modes.
* New MultiPlayer control page that allows for easier player
management (syncing, moving between sources,...)
* Group control for synced players.
* Player context menu bundling all player features, reachable
through the MultiPlayer control
* Context menus for the current track and tracks in the current
playlist.
* Improved management of current playlist including option to save
it.
* Quick Tutorials explain the operation of iPeng.
* Many, many details.

New User Interface and Look.

The first thing you'll notice is changed colors. But believe me, it's
not about colors.

iPeng now has a stringent UI concept that tries to do away with the
confusion around SqueezePlay menus and different button modes. iPeng's
new interface logic goes as follows:

* Every item that has more than one action attached to it does have
a Context Menu
* You reach the Context Menu through a "hold" gesture (hold an item
for approx. 1s). This will work almost everywhere (as long as there is
something to be displayed): menus, library items, NowPlaying cover,
playlist item, current player, you name it.
* Simply tapping an item will trigger the default action, most of
the time this means: descend to a lower menu.
* Clicking an Album Cover (in a menu) will immediately play that
album (there are one or two exceptions to this in places where it
doesn't make sense to play the album).

There is one exception: When viewing an Album or Playlist (that is:
anything containing only tracks) there is still the old "mode" scheme.
This is to allow you faster access to tracks for playing whole albums or
building playlists; for many users these are the things they usually do
with iPeng:

* There are the tree modes in the navigation bar that determine
what happens when you tap a track
* play plays the whole album from that track
* add adds the track to the end of the playlist
* play-next inserts the track after the current one in the
playlist.
* hold will, as always, bring up a context menu.

New MultiPlayer Control

First of all: Yes, it does scroll :-). Apart from that, the whole thing
has been completely redesigned.

* Synced players are now grouped in sync groups that are
distinguishable by the currently playing track and play state. Below
this there are the individual players and you can set individual volume
and power state of each player.

* The MultiPlayer control has an edit mode in which you can move
players between sync groups and also music sources. This can be done
through drag'n'drop or by selecting several players and clicking a
command button.

Group Control

If you select a player from a sync group, the main volume and power
controls no longer act on the individual player, but on the whole group.
Note: this is different from the "Sync Power" and "Sync Volume" settings
in Squeezebox Server since you still have individual control over each
player:

* The main volume slider will show the average volume of the sync
group. Moving the slider will change the volume on all players
synchronously. You can change the relative volume between players using
the controls on the MultiPlayer control.
* The main power button will switch power on all players. You can
still change the power state of individual players using the MultiPlayer
control.

Player Context Menu

By clicking the accessory button on the current player in the
MultiPlayer control or by holding the player you get to a player context
menu. This menu will bundle all player specific settings and features
such as

* Alarms
* Sleep
* Player name
* some plugins that act on players
* Digital Inputs (Transporter only).

NowPlaying Context Menus

The cover art on NowPlaying and the tracks in the current playlist now
have a TrackInfo context menu that allows you to access features like

* Add to favorites
* Browse by album/artist etc.
* Access similar music through Apps
* Get more Information about the track

Current Playlist

* Deleting tracks from the current playlist has been changed to a
batch delete (just try it, you will understand it).

* Also, the current playlist can now be saved.

Quick Tutorials

In several places in iPeng, features you encounter for the first time
will be explained by a short, animated tutorial.
And many more details...

* Keep Connection now really works (at least for 30min)
* WiFi will no longer be shut down as long as the App is in the
foreground.
* Apps can be included in the main menu.
* there is more...

As usual: Have fun with iPeng :-)

1. Search and then pick an artist. Albums are not sorted as if you pick
an artist without searching. They should be sorted by Year (or Name if
that setting is on).

2. Syncing players by dragging is kinda hard sometimes. When dropping
the player "inside" another player is sometimes

3. Syncing players and then unsyncing them by dragging them sometimes
leaves the players synced even though they are displayed in the
interface as unsynced.

4. Rearrange order of players works fine except that you can't drop a
player at top. I don't know if rearranging players is intentional
feature but it would be nice if iPeng remembered the order when you
restart the app.

I just played with it only for a few minutes, but the ability to grab
some items and delete them in the Now Playing screens is the highlight
for me and it's great!!

Any chance that a future update will allow to move many items too?

Pippin,

Does iPeng 1.2 require 7.4? If I upgrade my iPOD touch to iPeng 1.2,
will I be able to use it without also upgrading my SC software? Assuming
it fails, does it fail gracefully with 7.3.4?

Hi pippin,

Just to say 1.2 is great. I really like the UI update, it makes it look
much more professional. I seem that I can find song rating using press
and hold, but is there anyway to change or set these using the UI? It
would also be nice to be able to see them on the now playing screen or
from within playlists. Anyway, fab update, keep up the good work.

Cheers

Err.. you mean like this?
[image:

You need TrackStat installed and the it's on a "single tap" overlay on
NowPlaying. Similar to the iPod App.

Yep, I mean just like that! Fantastic. Is there a what's new section on
your website? I read the overview but I think things like this fall
under the 'and lots of other stuff' heading!

p.s. 1.2 is even better now.

You won't find that in "What's new", it's been around since 1.0 :D

I'm working on an updated manual right now but it will take until the
end of the week until it's completed.

Peng still works with SC 7.3.x And I believe it's a worthwhile update
for 7.3 users, too.
The context menus will not work as well with 7.3 as with 7.4 because
there's a lot of functionality that's not yet there in 7.3 but that's
new 7.4 functionality anyway and I have also spent considerable effort
to get 7.3 as close as possible.
Also, the Music Services will still be under "Radios" and not under
"Apps" obviously and lack the new functionality you can get there
(especially context menus, again). You also only can put them on the
main menu with 7.4.

So if you don't feel like going to 7.4 take your time. 7.4 does have
some teething problems, although I believe it will eventually be
worthwhile and some of these are not as bas with iPeng as without (iPeng
_does_ have TrackInfo on NowPlaying and the current playlist also with
7.4 although some menu entries do not work correctly and it's a bit more
easy to switch between SBS and MySB.

1. good find! Could you file a ticket for this so that I not forget to
fix it?
https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/

2. Yes, well, that's how D'n'D on iPhone is... It's a bit hard to do
with only "touch" as a control...
You can also sync by selecting the players you want to sync and
pressing the "sync" button on the lower toolbar.

3. This is strange and should not be. I also haven't seen that. Are you
sure they are still synced?
Sometimes it can take a short while until server feedback about
sync/mode actions (move means: to another server) comes in ans therefore
there can be a jumping back and forth but it should eventually do as
commanded.

4. rearranging players is not purely accidental but let's say it's not
an advertised feature because there are quite a lot of situations where
it will not work (the sort order will change on it's own, that is).
It's extremely ahrd to get around that because what I see is that the
server sometimes sporadically "forgets" about a player and brings it
back later and you have to react to that because it could well have
been a change through a different interface.
You could also file a ticket on the "rearrange to first place" thing
and I'll investigate but right now I am not sure whether I maybe
intentionally ignored the lack because you can still move the first item
to second place.

Actually that's something where I tried to get my head around recently
(although for players, not tracks). Would a logic to mark several items
and move them together if you move one of them be somehow intuitive?
That would make for a great ticket then :D

Rest;464105 Wrote:

Well, if you ask like _that_ I can't give you an answer.
iPeng still supports it and it works better than in 1.1.2 yet I have
never had any issues with this feature, it works fine with my controller
as well.
So if people are experiencing issues I believe it's either
a) they lost/changed their library settings and don't have a music
library set anymore (but use only iTunes or MusicIP integration)
b) there is some kind of issue with 7.4 and music folder browsing that
I never encountered.

I can't promise anything on b) :D

1. #127

2. What happens is that I pick a player and drops it below another
player header and above the other player name. (Can't provide a
screenshot right now). The interface moves the header and player name
apart but when I make the drop it returns to the previous position.

3. The interface show them as two separate players. If I select one of
them and hit pause or next track, etc both reacts. I'll try to describe
it step by step later.

4. I see that the "lost" player screws up the order. Can't iPeng keep
the previous order until it's rearranged again? When the player returns
it gets it's previous position back. If a previously unknown players
turns up add it to the bottom of the list. In other words let iPeng
determine the order all the time and don't care about the order from
SqueezeCenter.

1. Thanks!
2. And it doesn't move back into the group after a few moments? What
kind of player is this?
3. Can you reproduce this? Or did it only happen once? Do they still
show up separately when you restart iPeng?
4. No, it's not that easy. iPeng gets the necessary data from the
server through two different channels:
- serverstatus. This gives you the number ans IDs of the players
- player status. This contains the sync state.
The problem is that it can take several seconds until the new player
status comes in. So iPeng first assumes that whatever action you did was
successful and changes that proposition when a new player status with a
different sync state comes in. Maybe that's where something went wrong.
First separating them again is a bad idea because it confuses users
(they will think the sync failed; this still can happen when a regular
player status comes in at the wrong time) and try to sync again.
The position problem is that server status sometimes seems to "lose" a
player, iPeng then removes it and brings it back when the next player
status comes in showing that the player is still there.

Sync management is still not perfect in SBS and iPeng has to work
around that a bit.

2. I'll try to reproduce this.

3. I'll try to reproduce this.

4. I don't know if we're talking about the same thing. I'm talking
about individual player rearrangement and not when syncing players. i.e.
what order the players appear in the list. If we bring syncing into it I
guess unsyncing either could bring the player back to where in the list
is was before or put it at the bottom like when a new player appear.

start -> sort -> sync -> new -> unsync ->
A B C -> A C B -> C BA -> C BA D -> A C B D ->

As long as you use the same iTunes account that you purchased iPeng
with, it's also safe to "purchase" it again. As soon as you have
confirmed this it will tell you that you have bought the App before and
you can now download it for free.

Hi Pippin, i must say it's great to see such interaction between
developer and customers, i'm a recent convert to squeezebox, and a big
part of my decision was driven by ipeng, and the positive reviews and
constant conversation you engage users in.

The update looks great, the icon in particular (good design always
helps!) nice work, can't wait to get home and fire up the squeezebox.

andy

PS. it's available now in the NZ store.

Wow...great upgrade! One question, on the players page and the right
arrow that takes yo to another context that has Alarm Clock, Sleep,
Audio, etc can you add additional selection for example I would like to
add "Favorites" to the list?

Interesting idea.
That menu is meant to be a player context menu but having a list of
shortcut menus that show up like that on NowPlaying could be fun.

Could you file a ticket for this?

Do you see your player in the server's web interface?
Are you actually connected to your server? Or does it show up under
"Music Sources" which means you have to select it.
If it's the latter and you are seeing this more often, please try
enabling "Settings->iPeng Settings->Forget Last Server".

Could you follow up here?

Rule #1.

If you are going to charge money for a product that involves having
written copy, you might consider paying a professional proofreader.

There are spelling and grammatical errors all over this application,
starting in the "Welcome to iPeng 1.2" screen.

I am sure Pippin could have done it better in German.. I just use iPeng

Have you ever read a technical documentation of any Industrial

Pippin, this is a really good release. Thanks for the time and effort, a
vast improvement over 1.1.2.

One thing though that I was really hoping for was the default screen
when viewing the main menus. When you click the left arrow from the Now
Playing screen, it always takes you to the settings page. In all
likelihood I'm going looking for more music to play, not change my
settings. I tend to browse by Artist or, possibly, by Album, so I have
these dragged down to the shortcut bar at the bottom.

Could it remember the page you were last on (between sessions too), or
failing that default to the first of the 4 shortcuts?

Hope this makes sense...

It does. You fell into a bug that will be partly fixed in 1.2.1
The problem here is, that you probably changed the Tab Bar (on the
lower end of the screen) while being connected to MySqueezebox.com so
the first item now defaults to "i".
You probably can't remove it while being connected to SBS so please go
to MySB, exchange the "i" for something else and then switch back to
SBS. In 1.2.1 you will be able to remove the item also from SBS and long
term the way it should be is this:

Sorry, but if I've understood you correctly then this isn't it. I've
gone into MySB and the first item on the bottom toolbar is Favourites.
Interestingly though the MySB main menu also defaults to More, whereas
if I've understood correctly it should be Favourites as that's first in
the shortcuts along the bottom.

No, if you initially start iPeng, the main menu defaults to "More",
that's the expected behavior since that's really the full main menu.
I'm not sure whether "i" needs to be the first item, but iPeng always
seems to open that one if it's present with a SBS, maybe because it's an
item that is not in the list of editable items....

Fair enough. I guess then that's what I'm saying - I don't think it
makes sense for More to be the default, because you're most likely to
want to use one of the items on the shortcut bar. You've put them there
because they're the ones used most often...

Greetings Pippin!

Fantastic update; love it with 7.4 (despite 7.4's "teething problems").
;-) That said, I found a couple of graphical glitches on mine when the
tutorials kick in. Not a deal breaker for me but thought I'd mention
it.

See the image below. This happened when I hit the "reverse" button at
the bottom of the tutorial when it was playing to see an animation play
over (by the way, you might want to add an iPeng setting to disable
animations and to slow playback down).

I'm on an iPhone 3GS (3.1) and Squeezebox Server 7.4 on Vista 32 bit
SP2. Did a clean install of SB Server and updated my previous version
of iPeng while sync'd to iTunes.

Cheers!

The progress indicator has nothing to do with the cover art (other than
that cover art only starts loading after all albums have been cached).
Instead, it shows how much of the _page_ you are looking at is already
cached.
And it only shows up for pages that do actually become cached. These
are Albums, Artists and Genres. NewMusic is not being cached since it
typically only contains 200 albums which is not _that_ much for iPeng.

If you tap on the active tab bar icon again, iPeng will return to the
top level menu for that tab.

You select the edit mode (button at the top right).
Then you can either drag a player out of the group or you can select
the player (tap it and it will get a check mark) and then tap the
"unsync" button on the lower tool bar (broken chain symbol).

That was probably because my hosting provider had a server maintenance

I'm using iPeng since it's available on iTunes store. It has changed
completely my usage of SqueezeBoxes... I've always found the Squeezebox
interface very limited -- such as browsing through a list of artists or
album on a single line display. And did not want to carry my PC in the
living room.

And then there was iPeng. It is all at once: convenient, easy, stable
enough, good looking, it shows the artwork, etc.... And now, my iPod
Touch can be put in good use even when I stay home.

Thanks for the good job!

Hi there,

Long time, no posting from my side. It does not mean I do not enjoy my
Squeezebox & iPeng. In fact I am actually using this daily (iPeng was my
main motivation for buying my original iPod Touch). It looks fantastic
(finally the home-screen-icon & app. graphics that you've been longing
for :-). And I surely can control many more aspects easily and quickly.
Nice!

I have a few questions / comments, and do realise that I as usual risk
just having overlooked this...but here we go (using SqueezeCenter
7.3.2):

- Tapping on the left/right side of the "dots" on the now playing
screens does no longer seem to have any effect - choice or bug?

- I suffer from "slow" reaction when browsing artists or genres. Every
time I choose e.g. a genre, it is loading for a loooong time before
showing something, then I choose an artist and the same happens. This
makes it slow and frustrating. Anything I can do? Would a bigger cache
improve on things? For my sake you can cache *everything* (iPeng is my
most important app, after all).

- I cannot find the MusicIP integration - is it gone?

- I experience, when browsing certain genres, that when I click "all
albums", then I literally see all albums in my library - not the ones
belonging to the chosen genre. Anyone else experiencing this? Could be a
Server issue, although it works fine on the Squeezebox itself.

Cheers from Denmark - looking forward to being pointed in the right
directions :-)

Choice. It was always buggy and you were at risk of disconnecting the
"dot control" from the actual page.
Did you actually use this?

Could you file a ticket? I want to do a big cache-makeover after 1.3
to also cache several servers and improve some other things.
https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/

Generally, I'm not aware that anything has changed on the
artists/genres query code so I'm surprised that it behaves different.
Genres have always been slow.
>
> - I cannot find the MusicIP integration - is it gone?

Err... no? Problem is I can't test this right now since I don't have
MusicIP on my 7.3 server. It should be in the Album Context menu that
you get when "holding" an album. And in the TrackInfo menu you get when
"hold"ing a track within an album or on the current playlist or the
NowPlaying cover art.
Is it not there? What do you see?

Hm. I'm not seeing this. Have you played around with the "show only
albums/tracks with the chosen Genre" setting on the server side?

"loading", load on server is pretty low (approx. 83% idle, 1.33 GHz
G4).

What I do: "Genres -> All Albums"...and the result in 1.2 is literally
*ALL Albums*. Not good, because what I ultimately wish to do is to
shuffle all songs to listen to random stuff from a specific genre.

The good news is the "contextual menu", which seems to work. Holding
down on a chosen Genre brings up a "Play" option. So this works for now.

seems to be that mixing is very slow (albeit, no load for MusicIP on the
server while mixing !?). But it works if you have a bit of patience. And
that is nice :-)

I'll btw. give 7.4.1 a shot...

No, as stated somewhere in another forum there obviously is not and
Andy said this was due to a request from facebook.

On the phones, what do you want to do differently? The settings within
iPeng should be local to that device.
If you want different server configurations I'm afraid you will need
separate servers.

Hi Pippin,

Ok, thanks for the ultraquick support :-) I will look where described.
I tried checking the help on the website, but did not manage to find
anything related to MusicIP, but guess I should have searched for
"mixers" in general. My bad. I will try tomorrow.

As for the Cache thing, sure. I do only have 7.000 tracks (all in AAC
format) so it is not a huge collection - hence, it should be possible to
cache everything. The music server itself is a bit old though (G4 Mac
Mini running 10.5), so it could be a server performance issue, I
guess...

Good night for now,

Sune

Sune, neither the G4 nor your library size should cause issues.
The AAC on the other hand...
Is the browsing slower if you play something? AAC is being transcoded
on your server so THAT will consume quite a bit of CPU.

*grin* - and I just spent an eternity on converting everything to one
common format. Should have checked twice on this, I guess.

As for the browsing speed, I will check if it is connected to the AAC.

What *would* have been a good format, looking to preserve sound quality
while not filling up the harddrive too fast?

For a combination of small file size and compatibility MP3 would have
been the best option.

For small file size, with a format that can be played natively by the
Squeezeboxes WMA was probably the best bet. But then you sacrifice
compatibility.

The "proper" answer though would have been to buy a new hard drive,
encode to FLAC and worry about encoding to lossy files only when you
really need the small file size.

If you were converting to lossless format, mp3 is the logical choice.
It's supported by just about everything out there.

However, as another poster suggested something lossless like FLAC would
be the way to go if you are ripping your collection. With the size of
HDDs these days it's not really an issue that it takes more space to
store and you can always batch convert later if you want to put it into
any given lossy format.

Very nice; the devices page is great and the help pages are a nice

Much better for those of us that don't read the complete manual!

cheers

btw did you rule out streaming to iPeng, by making it a device? or is
that possible?

Thanks

For that very screen: Probably not. That was done _very_ late in the
night one day after the really, really, final due date and 8 days after
the one it really should have been for App Store submission when I did
not yet know that the old iPeng release did actually work with 7.4...

This was a critical update that _had_ to come out with the MySB change
because you could no longer register with MySB with the old one and I am
actually very, very thankful to Apple that they put me on the fast lane
to get it available soon after Logitech's release.

Congratulaitons on the new update!

We're the CLI commands to play songs changed? I am using squeezeslave
0.9 for win32 and now after upgrading to 7.4 and ipeng 1.2 when i click
on an album cover or song it will just load an empty playlist and
nothing happens.

I can use the web based controls just fine, but not ipeng.

Is this the local library or a remote service?

I just performed an ubuntu 9.04 apt-get remove --purge and apt-get
install of squeezeboxserver and let it run its initial scan of the
library over (local music). Everything seems to be working fine now!

I guess what I may have done wrong last time was to install extensions
and restart the server, interrupting the initial scan which messed up
the database entries?

Anywho, thanks for the update pippin!

Works great with 7.3.1 - I am slow sometimes when things just work. Best
UI there is for the SB and the sole reason why I bought a iPod Touch in
the first place.

One minor thing that also was present in the prev. version. On program
startup, the status message area on the bottom of the screen says in a
quick sequence

1 "No player connected"
2 "Your player was not found"
3 and finally the <player name>

Would it not been better to just say "Initializing" or something
similar and then go straight to the <player name>?

If I'm not mistaken, the " new" 8gb ipod touch is not really a 3rd gen
Ipod Touch, it is a 2nd gen ipod touch. The 3rd gen Ipod Touch only
comes in 32gb and 64gb versions.

But if you are buying the 8gb you should have no problems, since I
myself have a 2nd gen Ipod touch running Ipeng.

Yep. It's exactly like that.
The touch 8GB works fine although the 3G models are indeed a bit
faster.
If you want to go cheap search for refurbished iPods on Apple's Web
site.

That's actually a bug:

These are only supposed to show up when you use IRBlaster. Will be

Great update pippin! Love the improved UI and the all the context menus
on the playlist.

One request -- could you add an option to display album artwork on the
playlist. I play mostly dynamic playlist mixes and that is the only
thing I like on the controller that I can't see on iPeng. Otherwise
iPeng is definitely my clear preferred choice with this latest update.

Keep up the great work.

It is well worth the investment if anyone is still wavering on that
choice.

This doesn't work from the NowPlaying context menu.
I know it but it's a complete mystery to me, currently investigating.
All other menus seem to work, I suspect it's something to do with some
context on the plugin side not being set correctly or whatever.

It works from browsing your App.

Hi Pippin,

First time I've been able to use it for a while as I had to upgrade to
7.4 a couple of months back after the Slim team fixed a problem for me.

It all works fine except occasionally I find that I'm stuck in Now
playing mode (the three screen swipe) with no way to get out. The icon
at the top of the screen is missing and hence there is no way to break
out.

Just wondering if you've come across that before. I'm going to try and
reproduce to see if I can consistently make this happen as I'm not sure
what is causing this at the moment.

I've attached screen shots of the Now playing screens.

regards
Russ

Ooops. That's bad.
I believe this means that the menu from which you came when you entered
NowPlaying is no longer there, but this should not happen because you
can't switch players from anywhere other than NowPlaying. Weird.
Or did maybe your player disconnect while you were browsing... but that
should not be an issue.
Please file a ticket as soon as you find a way to reproduce this.
I see you have more than one player, I believe you might be able to
recover by switching to a different player.

took me some fussing (mainly with squeezebox server) to get it running,
but i like the new version -- takes care of many of the nits i had about
1.1.

Question- for some reason albums are showing multiple times, even if
they have the same artist. The controlling factor appears to be the
composer -- for example in the screen shot attached, Abbey Road shows up
5 times because there are 5 different combinations of composers for
different songs (lennon-macarteny;lennon-macarteny-harrison, etc).
its a real hassle, and i dont see how to fix it. When I want to view
my albums, I want to see each album once. Any ideas -- is this your
setting or something in squeezebox server?

thanks

Good find!
Is animation playback too fast?
I had a lot of experimenting around this because I didn't want it to be
too slow (I don't want people to skip the animation, but of course it
should not be too slow.
My compromise is that the automatic progressing is disabled whenever
you manually go "back" or "next" so that you can decide on your own
speed.

I assume it shows up the same way in the Web Interface/Controller?
Judging from the number of threads on the issue this seems to be a
general 7.4 problem. I also have a few of these, yet then I always did.
Have you tried experimenting with the
"Settings-My Music->Compilations"
and
"Settings->My Music->Group Discs"
Settings in SBS?

I'm running 7.3.4 and apart from my problems described above everything
is smooth.

Hello Pippin,

very much liking the update - thank you.

There's only a couple of things I'd like to see: the buttons to take
you between the now playing screen and the music library screen could be
a little bit larger - as i spend most of the time flicking back and
forth between the 2. Also could all the album art be chached on the
iphone - so that it's there instantly?

thanks

I invested in a 64 gig iPod touch last weekend, charged it up having
first installed iTunes 9 on my desktop, did a minimal bit of reading of
the iPod manual, and fired up the touch.

Next up was to download and install iPeng 1.2 and to figure out how to
use the touch and iPeng. Brilliant...there's a bit of learning for a guy
brought up on Windows (not to mind PCDOS) but once the touch interface
begins to make sense, iPeng turns out to be a treat. Well done pippin!

iPeng beats the living daylights out of the Duet, and makes the
possibility of buying the Squeezebox Touch much more likely.

All album art is being cached on the iPhone after you read it once.
It's not all residing in memory but as much as I believe iPhone can
handle.

First off, thank you for a great program!

I have encountered a sync error. Background:

Snow Leopard 10.6.1, iPod Touch 3.1.1. iPeng 1.2, SqueezeCenter 7.4

4 Slim Devices - 1 Transporter and 3 SqueezeBox Classics. 3 of these
are always in sync and have been for the past 6 months: Master Bedroom
SqueezeBox, Living Room Transporter, Kitchen SqueezeBox.

While experimenting with your program, I took the Master Bedroom off
sync. Using your program, I then put the Master Bedroom back in sync by
tapping Kitchen. Your program then showed all three units back in sync
and there actually were in sync.

I then began to notice, for the first time ever, that periodically I
would lose the audio from my Master Bedroom. The info of the song would
continue to scroll but nothing came out of the analog outputs. I
discovered that every time I would turn off the Kitchen (all three still
in sync), within a few minutes, the Master bedroom lost its sound.
Repeatable.

I then went to my Intel iMac in Local 9000 and took the three units off
sync. Then using Local 9000 again, I first put the Master Bedroom in
sync with the Living Room and then put the Kitchen in sync with the
combined Master Bedroom and Kitchen.

Problem solved. I no longer lose the sound in the Master Bedroom when I
turn off the Kitchen.

Thought you would like to know and experiment with this.

Regards

I'll check.
Yet I don't believe this is an iPeng command. iPeng doesn't really DO
the syncing, it just tells SBS to do that, so it also can't really do a
lot wrong. This is very straightforwrd, it's "sync player a to player b"
period.

I'm seeing quite a few issues with syncing on SBS 7.4, too. Which kinds
of players do you use? Can you _reproduce_ the issue and what is the
sequence of things you are doing?
What kind of files are you playing?

Thanks for your reply. I am playing AIFF files.

In my previous post, I have already listed all the players, the exact
sequence of events, and how I solved the problem.

I spent a lot of time in figuring out the problem and correcting it. I
will not start over again to re-create the problem.

No permanent errors and no real big deal. I just wanted to let you know
of my experience.

Again, thanks for a great program.

I do not have a Genres=>All Albums option; the first screen when
tapping Genres, the screen that lists all the genres, does not have an
All Albums option. And if I choose Genres=><a genre>, Acid Jazz, for
example, and then All Albums I get a list of _all_ albums by _all_
artists, sorted by artist, not just albums with songs that have the
genre Acid Jazz set and not just albums for the two artists in my
collection that have performed songs with the genre Acid Jazz set.

In SBS, I have set the option Filter genre on album and song level to
Show all albums and songs for an artist (my own English translation of
the option).

Since I do not care much for applying genres to my music or browse by
genres, it is not a big issue for me, but, just like Sune and in
accordance with your reply, I doubt that this is the intended behaviour.
Am I doing something wrong?

Could it be that you had a different Master set in between the
experiments?
In iPeng, you see which device is the master from the order: the master
is the one at the top.

Now when I look at my device screen on iPeng, I see Master Bedroom on
top, then Living Room and finally Kitchen on the bottom of the list.

I do not recall the order when I first used 1.2 but it was probably the
same as now. I do remember that first I took Master Bedroom off sync
using iPeng and then was surprised that I did not have the option to put
it back in sync with combined 'Living Room, Kitchen'. Instead I just
tapped Kitchen and all 3 devices were then in sync. These were my only
sync changes using iPeng. This is when my problem of losing the sound of
my Master Bedroom SqueezeBox Classic (after turning off Kitchen
SqueezeBox Classic) first appeared.

I think that just choosing only 'Kitchen' in order to sync everything
again eventually caused the sound problem. The strangeness of not being
offered the combination of my other two units made me decide to solve my
problem by using Local 9000 on my computer instead of iPeng.

I am aware of several weird problems which depend on the sequence of
turning on and off synced devices on 7.3.X. This is probably one more
bug that shows in 7.4.

Again, this was just to bring this problem to your attention and
perhaps it would help another user in case he unexpectedly loses the
sound on a device.

I know you are working on a manual (hurry, hurry) which would make
things easier. For instance, what is the function of the large up/down
arrow buttons which show on each device on the device list? I tap them,
I tap and hold, but nothing happens. They appear on those devices that
have set volume. My only device that has adjustable volume is the Master
Bedroom and a volume control appears on that device instead of the
up/down large arrows.

Thanks again

Regards

Well, let's say: something's wrong. This is not the intended behavior
and it's not what I see. I will have to experiment with this. Could you
check whether flushing the cache solves it?

I don't understand this one. Did you maybe use a plugin like The
Synchronizer or something to sync the devices? Or did you move them
between MySqueezebox.com and your server (there's an SC bug that
sometimes syncs devices if you do that)?

In iPeng you usually sync devices through Drag'n'Drop (by dragging one
on the other or a group) or by selecting the device and selecting the
"sync" button. Both in the "Edit" mode on the players screen (activated
on that screen through the button in the top right).

If your players are off and you torn on a single one of these, the
selected one will become master. That's the only behavior I am aware
of.

Definitely. Have to return from Scotland, first.

That's a bug and will be fixed in 1.2.1. The up/down buttons should
only appear on devices using IRBlaster and there they do volume.

Thank you for the reply.

I have only used my computer and SqueezeCenter Local 9000 to sync
except of course for the one time using iPeng to sync which caused the
sound problem. As stated above, once I re-synced using Local 9000 I do
not have any sound problems

The weird problems due to the sequence of turning on and off synced
players show up in the device display being one song behind (easily
fixed) and also show up in trying to alter player menus (it would be too
long to describe here but it is a problem being worked on by the fine
folks at SqueezeCenter).

Thanks for letting me know about those large up/down buttons.

So OK - enough with Scotland and PLEASE come on home and work on the
manual.

Regards

OK...background:

Snow Leopard 10.6.1, iPod Touch 3.1.1, iPeng 1.2, SqueezeCenter 7.4

4 Slim Devices - 1 Transporter and 3 SqueezeBox Classics. 3 of these
are always in sync and have been for the past 6 months: Master Bedroom
SqueezeBox, Living Room Transporter, Kitchen SqueezeBox. These three
devices were put in sync by using Local 9000 on my iMac. All three
devices were 'on'.

On iPeng, I went to device list and pushed the edit button top right
corner. I then selected 'Master Bedroom', a red circle with checkmark
appeared, and then I pushed the 'un-sync' button on the bottom of the
screen.

(what follows is by memory as I do not wish to cause the sound problem
again) Master Bedroom was no longer synced. Living Room and Kitchen were
still in sync.

I then selected Master Bedroom and then selected Kitchen. I then pushed
the 'sync' button on the bottom of the screen and now all three devices
were again in sync.

Later I turned the Kitchen SqueezeBox off using my Squeeze remote in
the kitchen. That caused the sound in the Master bedroom to go off in
about 5 minutes but the Master Bedroom was still showing the song that
was playing.

I then turned the Master Bedroom off using the Squeeze remote. I pushed
the Play button on the Squeeze remote and I had sound again. I did the
experiment of turning off the Kitchen 3 times and 3 times I lost the
sound in theMaster Bedroom.

I went to Local 9000 and un-synced everything and then synced the
Master Bedroom to the Living Room. Then I synced the Kitchen to the
combination 'Master Bedroom, Living Room'. Now when I turn off Kitchen,
I do not lose the sound of the Master bedroom.

I think the problem is caused by NOT giving me the option to sync my
Master Bedroom with the combination 'Living Room, Kitchen' which are
already in sync - I have to choose EITHER the Living Room OR the Kitchen
because that is what your program offers. This probably interacts badly
with the SqueezeCenter software.

As I stated before, this is just to let you know of the problem or to
give a heads-up to any user with multiple synced devices who
mysteriously loses sound. As I leave these three devices always synced,
I can always use my computer to change this.

I hope this makes sense as I cannot write anymore!

Regards

OK, now I understand what you did :-)
just selecting single players out of a sync group to sync doesn't make
a difference, you always sync with the master.

Just to be sure: Did you probably use the main (big) power button to
turn the power off? That would turn off _all_ devices unless you disable
group control in iPeng's settings?
Or do you have set a "synced power" in SqueezeCenter's settings for
some of your devices?

Ok, this looks very, very wrong indeed. I'll investigate when I'm home.
