AWSSL v1.9j is now available in the files area.

AWSSL is an MVS (OS/390, zOS, etc) utility which moves datasets
directly to/from AWS and HET virtual tape files. It is intended
to facilitate transport of datasets via virtual tape files between
MVS running in non-emulated environments (real hardware) and systems
which find AWS virtual tape structures to be useful (such as Hercules).

Staging of datasets to an intermediate physical tape volume is not
required. PDS (and PDS/E) support is present. Standard labels (taking
appropriate defaults where appropriate) are supported. The distribution
is in TSO XMIT format.

AWSSL strives to maintain compatibility with other AWS/HET utilities
including AWSUTIL, VTT2DISK|TAPE, HETUTL as well as the Hercules machine
emulator.

This is a maintenance release which corrects problems extracting
datasets from AWS text files when multiple AWSGET requests are
made in a single execution pass, and incorrect positioning to the
HDR1 label when processing other than the first logical dataset
within the AWS text. Thanks to James R. Tate.

AWSSL is also available via the CBTTAPE archives.

Enjoy,

AWSSL was written to process an AWS or HET tape image as a disk file not a
tape file.

The tape image that you created and downloaded from OS/390 can be uploaded
to your MVS system as a sequential disk file and then used as input.
Otherwise just use IEBCOPY or other utility to process as a standard tape
file. I have used it to create tape images from OS/390 and have also used
it to restore files from these images. It is definitely easier to use than
writing JCL to execute utilities for each file.

Reed did a great job in writing the utility. I have found it very easy to
use and it has saved me hours of time in moving large volumes of files.

Hi Cormer,

Is SF03224.DDR.REXX (first file to be unloaded to your AWS text file)
perhaps a PDS? If so, append ",UNLOAD=IEBCOPY" to your AWSPUT statement.

Otherwise, email me privately with the output of your AWSSL execution.

Regards,

Reed,

Hi Cormer,
Is SF03224.DDR.REXX (first file to be unloaded to your AWS text file)
perhaps a PDS? If so, append ",UNLOAD=IEBCOPY" to your AWSPUT statement.
Otherwise, email me privately with the output of your AWSSL execution.

Hi Cormer,

IEBCOPY must run authorized. If it is called by AWSSL then AWSSL
must be authorized also. Your alternative is to IEBCOPY unload
the PDS into a dataset in a seperate step and then ask AWSSL to
put that into the AWS structure (which is what AWSSL would do
internally).

Back to your original symptom, if one asks QSAM or BSAM to read
a pds without specifying a member name, the directory blocks
are read and then end of file is raised. Thus you end up with
a sequential dataset of directory blocks and no member data (which
can be handy in other situations but not this one).

AWSSL reads datasets with QSAM unless some other type of unload
method is specified (i.e. UNLOAD= keyword). Hope this helps.

Use PGM=IEBCOPY to copy the PDS to a sequential
disk data set and then copy the sequential disk data
set to the tape image.

You should also reply to the allocation recovery
and get a request to mount the tape before you enter
the devinit.

Specifying a tiny chunk size and other output
parameters for an input tape makes no sense.
Specifying a chunk size for het makes no sense.
Chunk size was used for aws at one time. Blocks have
to be split in chunks if your blocks are over 64K-1.
Some old system might not be able to read an aws tape
with chunks over 4K, but I don't know which one.

P.S. APF is not RACF
