Dear RMCR netters:

I am a novice in classical music, especially in orchestral
works (I have been listening to classical piano music for a few
years). Attached below is a list of my small CD collection of
orchestral pieces (excluding concertos). Most of them I
purchased in the last 3 years based on recommendations of friends
and posts of this group.

I have a budget for 8-10 CDs. What do you think I am
particularly lacking, and which recordings would you recommend?

Not too bad a list for starters - but a list of what you're missing
would dwarf your 8-10 disc limit.

The more obvious candidates:

Haydn "London" and "Paris" symphonies. (That's 6-7 discs
right there.
Mozart Symphonies 38-41 (and, later, 25 and 29-36).
Brahms 4 symphonies and overtures.
Schumann 4 sympnonies.
Mendelssohn "Scottish" and "Italian" symphonies, "Midsummer
Night's Dream" music and overtures.
Bruckner Symphonies 7, 9, 8, 4 & 5; you'll want the others later.
Mahler - start with 1, 2, 5 and 9 (although my own turn-on was the 3rd).
R. Strauss - Till Eulenspiegel, Don Juan, Death & Transfiguration,
Ein Heldenleben, Don Quixote, Also Sprach Zarathrustra.
Elgar Symphony 2, Falstaff, Cockaigne and In the South.
Nielsen symphonies 3-5.
Prokofiev symphonies 1, 5 & 6; Peter and the Wolf; Lt. Kije suite,
Scythian Suite.
The remaining Sibelius symphonies.
Vaughan Williams symphonies 2-6.
Britten Sinfonia da Requiem, Peter Grimes interludes.
Shostakovich symphonies 5, 10, 8, 9, 15, 1, 6.

That doesn't even count Wagner excerpts.

What an excellent start you have made! It's obvious that you select
your recordings with care. If I were you my next acquisitions of
orchestral music would be:

Bach Brandenburg Concerti
Handel Water Music, Royal Fireworks Music, Concerti Grossi op. 6
Mozart Symphonies 35-41
Haydn "London" Symphonies
Stravinsky Rite of Spring, Firebird, Petrouchka

Ask here for recommended performances, or chech the archives via
Google Groups.

Presumably you mean Klemperer's EMI recording, though I would prefer one of
the live ones, most likely the Concertgebouw one. And aren't there both a
studio Kubelik on DGG and a live one on Orfeo?

My recommendation would be the terrific 2-CD set of Abbado's 2 and 4; this
4th is my favorite stereo studio recording of the piece.

I think you would enjoy Mahler's first symphony (try Kubelik's version),
Brahms's first symphony (I like Sanderling's very much) and Elgar's
second symphony (I have the Naxos by Edward Downes: though you'll find
more strongly recommended versions, I'm content with the Naxos).

It looks to me like you already have a very good collection. My
recommendation for what you might want to purchase next would be a
disc of Wagner orchestral excerpts (George Szell's Cleveland Orchestra
recording on Sony Essential Classics is about as good as it gets, imo,
and is also very cheap) and, as many people have already suggested,
some Mahler. You seem to like Walter, so you might want to try his
recordings of the first and second Mahler symphonies on a relatively
cheap Sony two-fer.

A good collection overall, much different from what most "beginners" would
have!

I notice a lack of several "major" orchestral composers:
Brahms: 4 symphonies (for 1 and the Academic Festival Overture, I like
Klemperer/Philharmonia/EMI; for 2-4, Tragic Overture and Haydn Variations, I
like Bernstein/Vienna/DG or maybe Haitink/BSO, but others have different
tastes)
Schumann: 4 symphonies (several good choices recently discussed, such as
Szell, Kubelik, Sawallish, Barenboim)

I would also recommend you add:
Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra (since you have the MfSPaC, you could try
Blomstedt/SFS, coupled with Kossuth)
Dvorak: 7 (Neumann/Czech Phil)
Schubert: 9 (I like Blomstedt/SFS, but it's probably out of print, and there
are other good ones, maybe Harnoncourt/Concertgebouw or Abaddo/CO of Europe)
Stravinsky: Firebird (Boulez/CSO/DG)

Also:
Mahler
Bruckner
Nielsen
Mendelssohn
Elgar
(and on and on...)

It kind of depends on which of the pieces you already have you like the
best.
