I have Google Photos on my 'phone and when I take a photo with my 'phone
I can open GP and view the photo almost immediately. EVENTUALLLY, I can
view the photo (and all the others stored on my 'phone) by opening GP in
Chrome on my desky. But I don't know how long it takes for the pics to
"get to" the desky app and can't see any way to refresh it or tell it to
find the latest photos. How do I do that? It is currently showing me
photos I took on 27 June but not the ones I took on 06 and 08 July and
to-day.

On the taskbar to the right there is a little icon of a cloud with an up
arrow in it. Click on this to see the status of your backup/sync as far
as the laptop is concerned and your preferences in the settings (3 dots
at top right).

On the phone, click on the menu (3 bars) top left and see the settings
there.

It's all a bit arcane. I have a pretty good broadband connection here
(usually above 40 Mbps) and it took ages to sync eventually and now
seems to sync pretty quickly (a selfie I took by mistake 30 minutes ago
is already up there).

I still don't understand why lots of items won't sync, how can they be
"TOO SMALL" FFS ?

Google's image processing needs high quality images to ensure full
invasion of your privacy?

Thank you muchly! There was a setting in there which must have somehow
switched itself off - certainly I didn't do it! Switched on again now
and photos dully appeared on desktop.

I think there's a brightness adjuster somewhere ;)

I think there's a brightness adjuster somewhere ;)
:-) (Makes a change from this keyboard missing letters, as usual!) And
appropriately enough, when looking at the latest pics a little pop-up
appeared saying "adjust lighting?" which I don't think I've seen before.

Google Photos has an oddity of nomenclature. If you upload the original
photos, these count against your 15Gb data allowance. If you allow the
system to reduce the quality, they are stored for "free" without using
any of your 15Gb allowance.

The original quality photos are referred to to as Original Quality.
The lower quality photos are referred to as High Quality.
