Schumann's quartets - favorites?

I hadn't heard them since the late sixties when I bought the Drolc Quartet's LP. Just heard the A major on the radio and was practically dancing on top of my steering wheel.
All suggestions welcome.

I don't know about availability, but the Vogler Qt (couplings with Brahms) is really good. So is the French Quatuor Ysaye.

I've not seen the A major (op 41, no. 3) by Vogler, only the first two. Are you sure they recorded it? For #3 I like the 1953 recordings by the New Music String Quartet.

Yes, I have the Vogler RCA cd with Schumann's 41/3 and Brahms 51/2. The copyright is from 1995.

After some effort and adding an extra t to quartet, I found one on Discogs, priced quite reasonably. Thanks.

The Engegård Quartet on BIS, if you want a modern recording. Playing and engineering (especially in MCh) are both superb.

I don't know about favourites, I never really compared any and don't
know many versions. But I like the Hagen quartet. It's coupled (on one
cd) with a fine rendition of the piano quintet with Paul Gulda.

I have that one too. Problem is I like the Schumann's Piano Quartet a lot better than the Quintet.

Has anyone mentioned the Doric Quartet? A recent recording brought to my attention by contributor Dirge, which might be my favorite full set of the three since the superb Juilliard Quartet record of the late 1960s; as was mentioned, I think the latter has to be gotten from Japan. The Auryn is recommendable but not quite at the same level, a shade more understated than it might be.

The Lark Quartet, like many other ensembles, just recorded #1 and #3 but it's a splendid set; sensitive, alert, and gutsy. Incidentally, Astrid Schween, their long-time cellist, is now with the Juilliard.

Also incidentally, there are superlative recordings of single quartets by (chronologically) the Lener Quartet, the Paganini, the Quartetto Italiano (I prefer their one quartet on EMI to anything in their Philips set), and the Musikverein (Decca, reissued on Eloquence).

Outside of a live Bruckner Quintet, I never warmed to the Voglers but admit that I haven't heard their Schumann.

Not sure if I'm understanding the question, but I have the Decca QI box, and #2 is in there twice - once on CD5 from 1950, the second time on CD33 (with the other two quartets of opus 41)

Many thanks, Thomas. Guess my knowledge of their discography is limited. I now see that they recorded #2 when they were the "New Italian Quartet," for Decca (looks like a handful of things appeared that way). Coupling the Verdi quartet.
