Lord Martin Fitzalan Howard, DL, JP, of Brockfield Hall, near York,
uncle of the 18th Duke of Norfolk, died at his home, 1 August, 2003.
He was 80.

He was born the Hon. Martin Fitzalan Howard, 22 October, 1922, third
son of the 3rd Baron Howard of Glossop, MBE, by his wife Baroness
Beaumont (a peeress in her own right), and was educated at Ampleforth
where he was a friend a contemporary of the Grand Duke Jean of
Luxembourg.

In 1975 his elder brother, Miles (who died in 2002) succeeded his
kinsman as 17th Duke of Norfolk, and Earl Marshal, &c., and Martin and
his siblings were raised to the rank of a duke's sons and daughters.

Career: Captain in the Grenadier Guards, served in the Second World
War and was wounded, Palestine 1945-46; High Sheriff of North
Yorkshire, 1979-80; Justice of the Peace for the North Riding of
Yorkshire from 1966; Deputy Lieutenant for North Yorkshire from 1982;
&c.

Lord Martin married at St James's Church, Spanish Place, London, 5
October, 1948, Bridget Anne Keppel, five generations in descent from
the 2nd Earl of Albemarle, and a kinswoman of Mrs Camilla Parker
Bowles.

Lord Martin is survived by his wife, and daughters Clare, Sarah,
Amanda and Rose, and only son Philip (Grand Duke Jean's godson).

For siblings of a successor to a more distant relative to receive the
style,rank,and precedence of children of a past holder of the title is
frequent,but it requires a request to the Queen,it is not automatic.

A "close shave" by the parent of the requestor is not needed...the 9th
and last Duke of Portland,on the death iof the 7th Duke in 1977,was
granted the style,rank,and precedence of the younger son of a Duke,
"as if his father had lived to become Duke of Portland",before becoming
Duke himself on his brother's death in 1980.His father,William George
Frederick Cavendish-Bentinck,died at 92 on November 13th 1948(the day
before hte birth of the Prince of Wales),at which time the 7th Duke's
brother(1900-1950) was heir-presumptive and his half-uncle next in line.

Geoffrey Millais, 6th Baronet, died 2 August, 2003, aged 85. He was
the father of four sons and one daughter.

Brigadier Prince John Ghika, CBE, late the Irish Guards, husband of
Judy, & father of Christopher & Jean, died 2 August, 2003; scion of a
Roumanian noble family, & grandson of Marthe Bibesco.

The Hon Lady Mosley, who died 11 August, 2003, was the former Hon
Diana Freeman-Mitford, daughter of the 2nd Baron Redesdale. She m.
1stly, 1929, (div. 1934), the Hon Bryan Walter Guinness (afterwards
the 2nd Baron Moyne), who d. in 1992, and married 2ndly, 1936, Sir
Oswald Ernald Mosley, 6th Baronet, who d. 1980.

The 3rd Baron Manton (Joseph Rupert Eric Robert Watson) died at his
home near York, 8 August, 2003, aged 79. He succeeded to the peerage
in 1968; was Senior Steward of the Jockey Club; DL for Humberside; the
father of triplets, &c.

Manton is succeeded by his eld. Triplet son, Maj the Hon Miles Ronald
Marcus Watson, The Life Guards, b. 7 May, 1958. Lord Manton's eldest
dau, Claire, is wife of the 3rd Baron Hesketh, &c.

the first wife between 1940 and 1949 of Group Capt John Heber-Percy,
RAF, (1910-75), of the Dukes of Northumberland, & was the mother of
Christopher, Susan, & Josceline.

Sir (John) Anthony Jephcott, 2nd Baronet, died in Auckland, New
Zealand, 7 August, 2003, aged 79. The father of daughters, he is
succeeded by his yr brother, Neil, 74.

Anthony Patrick de Buckenhold Thorold, b. 1938, scion of the Thorold
Baronets, died 10 August, 2003. He leaves a widow and two daughters,
Emma and Antonia.

Lady Dunpark died at Edinburgh, 14 August, 2003. She was wife of
Alastair McPherson Johnston, the Hon Lord Dunpark, a Senator of the
College of Justice in Scotland; & was Katharine Margaret (Bunty),
daughter of Charles Mitchell, of Chiselhurst, & m. in 1939.

of that landed family, who was b. 15 July, 1912, died 3 August, 2003,
aged 91.

Jean Robertson-Glasgow, of that landed family, who was b. 14 July,
1916, d. 1 August, 2003, aged 87; daughter of Lt-Col. Noel
Robertson-Glasgow (1881-1956), by his wife Effie Lorne Campbell, of

awfully young.

Lady Georgina Lucy Grosvenor, who was b. 1973, only daughter of the
8th Earl of Wilton, by his third wife, died at Mount Macedon,
Victoria, Australia, 16 August, 2003, aged 30. Lady Georgina was the
wife of Dr Peter Mitev, of New Jersey, USA.
The Baroness Boyd-Carpenter, widow of the life peer, Baron
Boyd-Carpenter, PC, who was b. 1910, died 16 August, 2003, aged 93.
She was the former Margaret Mary (Peggy) Hall, daughter of
Lieutenant-Colonel George Leslie Hall, OBE, by his wife Dorothy Mary
Coventry, of the Earls of Coventry. Lady Boyd-Carpenter's daughter,
Sarah, is Baroness Hogg (life peer since 1995) & wife of the 3rd
Viscount Hailsham, &c.

awfully young.

The death notice stated that she died peacefully, but didn't give a cause of death.

A Requiem Mass in Thanksgiving for the life of Georgina Lucy Grosvenor
will be offered at St Peter's Eastern Hill, Melbourne on Monday 25
August at 2.30pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Council of
Victoria.

live. She was 30 in March. She has been in the USA since her quartet
won the residency at Yale in September 1996 with the Tokyo String Qt.
Could someone pass this news on to Kirsten Spencer please and anyone
else who was at school with her or at Guildhall 1991-95? I see
Tildi's name
- maybe she knows how to contact Kirsten.

Thanks - Georgina came home for Christmas to perform in a festival and
give recitals, but was diagnosed with a cerebral tumour in February.

across quite often have sad or tragic circumstances surrounding them,

died in London, 22 August, 2003, aged 56, wife of Stephen (?), mother
of Will, Alice & Alex.

Geraldine Frances Flora Pole-Carew, who was b. 24 May, 1917, died at
Seaton, Devon, 25 August, 2003. She was a daughter of Maj. Gerald
Ayshford Pole-Carew, (1887-1969), of the Pole Baronets (Cr. 1628), by
his wife the former Eileen O'Callaghan (d. 1989), & was descended from
Sir John Pole, 3rd Bt, & from Wm Henry, 1st Lord Lyttelton.

second wife and widow of the 1st Viscount Eccles, CH, KCVO, PC. She
was b. Mary Morley Crapo, 8 July, 1912, in Detroit, USA, & m. 1stly,
Donald Hyde, (d. 1966), of Somerville, New Jersey, USA, & m. secondly,
in 1984, the 1st Visc Eccles, who d. in 1999.

Lady Eley, who was b. Penelope Hughes Wake-Walker, 12 September, 1917,
died 26 August, 2003, aged 85. She was the eldest daughter of Admiral
Sir William Frederic Wake-Walker, KCB (1888-1945), of the Walker
Baronets of Oakley House, by his wife Muriel Elsie Hughes (daughter of
Sir Collingwood Hughes, 10th Bt).

She m. 4 Sept, 1937, Sir Geoffrey Cecil Ryves Eley, Kt, CBE (1904-90),
and was the mother of four children. Her brother, Christopher, married
Lady Anne Spencer, aunt of Diana, Princess of Wales, &c.

Hellen, Lady Joseph, (nee Guggenheimer) who died at her home, 21
August, 2003, was the first wife of Sir Keith Joseph, MP, 2nd Baronet
(later Baron Joseph, of Portsoken, CH, PC)(1918-94), the former
Conservative Secretary of State for Education and would-be Tory
leader.

She was Hellen Louise, daughter of Sigmar Guggenheimer, of New York, &
married Sir Keith in 1951. They separated in 1978, and divorced in
1985. He became a life peer in 1987.


The 2nd Baron Milner of Leeds, died 20 August, 2003. He was 79.

Baron Milner was a Labour hereditary peer, and elected to the House of
Lords in 1999 when hundreds of his fellow hereditary peers lost their
seats.

He was a consultant in the firm of London solicitors, Gregory,
Rowcliffe & Milners (formerly Milners, Curry & Gaskell, his father's
practice) from 1988, and was a partner of the firm from 1953 to 1988.

Arthur James Michael Milner was born 12 September, 1923, the only son
of the 1st Baron Milner of Leeds, who as James Milner was Labour MP
for South East Leeds and a Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, who
was created a hereditary peer in 1951.

He was educated at Oundle and Trinity Hall, Cambridge (MA).

Career: served in the RAFVR 1942-46, Flight-Lieutenant 609 West Riding
Squadron, RAuxAF, 1947-52; Admitted Socititor, 1951; Opposition Whip
in the House of Lords, 1971-74; Member of the Joint Committee on
Consolidation Bills, 1982-92; Member on the Select Committee on
Private Bills, 1990-96; elected a Member of the House of Lords in
1999; Member of the Clothworkers' Company; Honorary Treasurer of the
Society of Yorkshiremen in London, 1967-70, &c.

Baron Milner of Leeds inherited the peerage on the death of his father
in July, 1967.

He was twice married - firstly, in 1951, to Sheila Margaret, the only
daughter of Gerald Hartley, of Headingley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, by
whom he had three children. Lady Milnmer died 15 July, 2000.

He married secondly, 12 April, 2002, at Chelsea, Helen Cutting
Wilmerding, younger daughter of Lucius Wilmerding, Jr, of Princeton,
New Jersey, United States.

The peer leaves a widow and two of his three children.

The peerage now devolves on his only son, the Hon Richard James
Milner, born 16 May, 1959.

His daughter, Meredith Ann (Meg), who was disabled, died 31 December,
1993.

Anne Duchess of Westminster, widow of the 2nd Duke of Westminster,
GCVO, DSO (1879-1953), died 31 August, 2003, at her home at Lochmore,
Sutherland, north-west Scotland.

The news was announced yesterday by her late husband's kinsman,
Gerald, the 6th Duke of Westminster.

The Duchess was the owner of Arkle, widely regarded as British horse
racing's greatest steeplechaser.

Lance-Corporal Anne (always known as Nancy) Sullivan, of the ATS,
stationed at Bovington, near Devizes, was 33 in 1947 when she bagged
the 2nd Duke of Westminster, as his fourth and final wife.

Nancy Westminster was born Anne Winifred Sullivan, the only daughter
(a brother was killed in action) of Brigadier-General Edward Langford
Sullivan, CB, CMG, (1865-1949), of St Helier, Jersey, & County Cork.

The Duchess's horse - Arkle - was named after a mountain close to her
Scottish estate estate.

The Duchess was a friend of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, the
Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles, and was mentioned as Nan or
Nancy Westminster on the notorious Camillagate tape.

Her greatest triumph was as owner of Arkle, which won the Cheltenham
Gold Cup for three successive years from 1964.

She was widowed fifty years ago - in July, 1953 - when the 2nd Duke
died at Lochmore, aged 74. The marriage was childless.

Anne Duchess of Westminster, widow of the 2nd Duke of Westminster,
GCVO, DSO (1879-1953), died 31 August, 2003, at her home at Lochmore,
Sutherland, north-west Scotland.

Her obit and that of Mary, Viscountess Eccles (widow and 2nd wife of
the 1st Viscount) are now listed on the Daily Telegraph website. Lady
Eccles is the more interesting to me, because of her connection to the
Boswell papers.

Mary Viscountess Eccles, who died 26 August, 2003, aged 91, was the
second wife and widow of the 1st Viscount Eccles, CH, KCVO, PC. She
was b. Mary Morley Crapo, 8 July, 1912, in Detroit, USA, & m. 1stly,

She was a great bibliophile and owner of the world's finest collection
of books and manuscripts relating to Samuel Johnson and James Boswell.
Her home in New Jersey, Four Oakes Farm, has a fireproof library with
800 letters from Johnson (about 80% of all known surviving letters) as
well as the Isham collection from Boswell's papers at Ireland's
Malahide Castle. She held a bachelors degree from Vassar and Masters
and Doctorate from Columbia and was the first woman elected to the
Roxburghe Club and among the first women members of the Grolier Club.

Lady Roderic Gordon, second wife & widow of Lord Roderic Gordon,
younger brother of the 12th Marquess of Huntly, died 23 August, 2003.
She was Joana Alexandra, second daughter of Ion Bujoiu, of Bucharest,
and married Lord Roderic as her third husband in 1949. She had married
previously (i) Prince Serban Ghica, and (ii) Chevalier de Stuers.

Margaret (Meg) Hotham, who was b. 21 March, 1911, d. 30 August, 2003,
at her home, aged 92. She was the former Margaret Williams-Wynn,
second daughter of Sir Robert William Herbert Williams-Wynn, 9th
Baronet (1862-1951) by his wife Elizabeth Ida Lowther, of the Lowther
Baronets, & married, 4 Oct, 1934, Maj the Hon Peter Hotham, late
KOYLI, second son of Capt Henry Hotham, and younger brother of the 7th
Baron Hotham. Mrs Hotham leaves issue.

Lucie Mackay, who died at Ayr, 31 August, 2003, aged 91, was born
Countess Lucie Catinka Christiane Julie Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow,
only daughter of Count Curt Ludwig Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow, of
Brahe Trolleborg, Korinth, Fyn, Denmark, and married (i), John Patrick
Douglas-Boswell, & (ii) in 1955, as his second wife, the Hon Alan John
Francis Mackay, second son of the 2nd Earl of Inchcape.

(Marie) Jacqueline Imbert-Terry, born 1923, died 29 August, 2003. She
was second daughter of Sir Henry Imbert-Terry, 2nd Baronet (1885-1962)
by his wife Midlred Dorothy, daughter of Brig-Gen Edward Montagu
Flint, (of Flint of Hembury Castle)by his wife Mildred Salome,
daughter Trehawke Kekewich (of Kekewich of Peamore).

She was married from 1947 to 1954 to MacRae Wyndham Greenhill (of the
landed family of that name), and later to William Maurice Williams.

Francis Bruen, MVO, DSC, Captain, Royal Navy, who was b. 23 Oct, 1918,
died at his home in Sark, Channel Islands, 31 August, 2003, aged 84.

He was a son of Admiral Edward Francis Bruen, CB, (1866-1952), of an
Irish landed family, by his wife, the former Constance Dora Drummond,
daughter of Admiral E.C. Drummond, of Eskhill, Angus.

Educated at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, he joined the Royal
Navy in 1932; served in the 1939-45 war; was promoted to Commander,
1955; attached to Her Majesty's Yacht "Britannia" 1955-57; Captain,
1964, &c.

Capt. Bruen was appointed MVO 4th class in 1957.
