Lord Martin Fitzalan Howard, DL, JP, of Brockfield Hall, near York,
uncle of the 18th Duke of Norfolk, died at his home, 1 August, 2003.
He was 80.
He was born the Hon. Martin Fitzalan Howard, 22 October, 1922, third
son of the 3rd Baron Howard of Glossop, MBE, by his wife Baroness
Beaumont (a peeress in her own right), and was educated at Ampleforth
where he was a friend a contemporary of the Grand Duke Jean of
Luxembourg.
In 1975 his elder brother, Miles (who died in 2002) succeeded his
kinsman as 17th Duke of Norfolk, and Earl Marshal, &c., and Martin and
his siblings were raised to the rank of a duke's sons and daughters.
Career: Captain in the Grenadier Guards, served in the Second World
War and was wounded, Palestine 1945-46; High Sheriff of North
Yorkshire, 1979-80; Justice of the Peace for the North Riding of
Yorkshire from 1966; Deputy Lieutenant for North Yorkshire from 1982;
&c.
Lord Martin married at St James's Church, Spanish Place, London, 5
October, 1948, Bridget Anne Keppel, five generations in descent from
the 2nd Earl of Albemarle, and a kinswoman of Mrs Camilla Parker
Bowles.
Lord Martin is survived by his wife, and daughters Clare, Sarah,
Amanda and Rose, and only son Philip (Grand Duke Jean's godson).
