OT: Hope somerat can help as this is worrying me

Yesterday had a website open, opened a Notepad file on my desktop to
make a note, went back to website and couldn't type anything in the
Search box because a continuous string of ~ symbols appeared.
Discovered this happened anywhere where text could be entered as soon as
I clicked. Closed all programs, unplugged keyboard - still a problem.
Closed down and restarted and I THINK there was still a problem - can't
quite remember. But tried to open the text file again and a screen
appeared telling me three times that the file was no longer there,
although I could see the icon. I deleted it (and emptied Recycle Bin)
and the ~ problem had gone away, so I presumed some problem with that
file had caused it. (An odd thing: Recycle Bin said it was emptying of
several thousand files, but in fact there were only a few in it.)

Last night and this morning no problems. Then all of a sudden got the ~
problem again. Managed to save and close everything and closed down.
Took the dog for a walk. About 45 mins later fired up the pc again and
everything appears to be working normally.

Have tried to Google for this problem but the only result was someone
who had letter p appearing continuously on his laptop. Everyone
suggested a sticky key, which the OP didn't think it was. I discounted
this in my case because it went on even when the keyboard was unplugged.
Does anyrat know what is going on? My first thought was a virus, but
Windows Defender has reported nothing.

Not an answer but a suggestion: do you have a restore point, at least
a few days old, that you could -erme- restore to?

Install a different virtual keyboard (or whatever it is)?

I had a weird problem yesterday too.
On Thursday I had been using the Avast Browser to look at some stuff on my
Bank's website. I wanted to copy something to NoteTab (which I use in
preference to Notepad) but couldn't see a way to access it - Bank Mode
operates full screen. Then I noticed a Notepad icon within the browser so
used that. Once Bank Mode was closed I could not find Notepad but as I'd
jotted down some notes on the back of an envelope, thought no more about
it.

At bedtime I closed everything down and told the computer to shut down.
In the morning I found it had not done so.
Last night, before bedtime, I tried to shut down the computer and hung
around to see what happened. A message popped up to say Notepad had an
untitled unsaved file which was stopping it from closing down and I should
Cancel and save my work.

Sometimes I think that deskies, lappies and tabbies all get together via a

Maybe the files were 'hidden' (eg their name has a dot at the front).
View -> Show hidden files.

Very much doubt it because the pc has only recently come back from
having work done on it, principally to speed it up, which I know
included deleting a lot of old download files and am fairly sure
included emptying the RB, but even if not I had pretty much emptied it
myself quite recently.

I think (hope) the problem was a keyboard one after all, even though I
thought on last night I should have mentioned that I had not at any time
used the ~ (or #) in the last couple of days. But it had another funny
episode last night when I had not been on the machine for a couple of
hours and noticed the screen had come on and noises were being made.
Closed down overnight and this morning changed to a different (wireless,
rather than plug-in, as it happens) keyboard and - touch wood - no
further problems.

Keyboards have their eccentricities, much like their operators. Mine is
set to UK English, but if I want one of these \ I have to press alt and
hash. Alt to the left of the space bar will not do, it has to be the one
to the right.

I used to have it happen quite frequently. Can't remember why, or how I
stopped it. Sorry. That's no help.

she was allowed to come into season. I've never heard anything like it

Absolutely. We had a family of three cats from the RSPCA last March and had
the joy of them all coming into season one by one in a confined room over
about two weeks. The RSPCA did eventually contribute to the cost of having
them all spayed but I was not happy! Flaunting was unmistakable!

Jenny, is there a particular reason your cat isn't spayed? Vets have been
doing this during lockdown.

(before she started) when we went into lock-down so she has been driving
me mad for some months now. She doesn't go outside a lot ("not nearly
enough" she says and when she does is restricted to the lawn on a long
lead, but she seems to be quieter out there and we haven't had any
visiting toms. There is one near-neighbour tom who is often in the
garden but don't think he's a threat.

One of the funniest cat sights I've ever seen was when we had a queen
named Moth and doctored tom named Raffles. Moth would offer herself in
her most alluring manner and Raffles would assume the position and then
look totally puzzled and say "Erm ... am I mean to do something now?"

She had the surgery, for which I and all the neighbours were profoundly
grateful. Wofe wanted her to have kittens, she was a very beautiful cat,
but none of her eight kittens looked anything like her. We could have
re- homed them all several times over though.

using some sort of warp technology. We never saw one until Kiya started
hurling pheromones around, then we had to barricade the doors. One
managed to get in, even though we didn't have a cat flap at the time. We
suspect more than one got in because some of the kittens were black and
the rest were ginger, despite their mum being Seal Point Siamese.

Why did yo have him done and not her? When we got 2 dogs, Bobby and
Molly, we thought it a priority to get her done asap, which, according
to the Spanish vet, was 6 months. If she got out or he got wise we'd
have unwanted pups but if he got out it wasn't important.

There were lots of wild dogs in Spain where we lived, she came from a
litter from one of those. A dog in heat attracted hordes of suitors.

Unfortunately in a number of cases having the op before the first
season can mean the dog does not develop normally and leaks pee unless
she is on medication all her life. The vet didn't warn us about that
and it happened to Molly.

There were lots of wild dogs in Spain where we lived, she came from a
litter from one of those. A dog in heat attracted hordes of suitors.

If only Spain had figured out that catching and neutering the male wild
dogs (and cats) would result in fewer wild dogs...

I used to be owned by Siamese. Now I have a neutered boy and an intact girl
Basenji. Whenever she is in season (once or twice a year) my boy practices
safe sex. In that he is humping away, at least 4 or 6" from her working
parts....

Why did yo have him done and not her? When we got 2 dogs, Bobby and
Molly, we thought it a priority to get her done asap, which, according
to the Spanish vet, was 6 months. If she got out or he got wise we'd
have unwanted pups but if he got out it wasn't important.

And completely painless unless you get your finger caught between the
bricks.

we haven't had any  visiting toms.  There is one near-neighbour tom
who is often in the  garden but don't think he's a threat.

You need to be careful.   I recently heard of a very young queen
around here who came into season for the first time and was being kept
strictly indoors.  One of the neighbouring toms broke the cat flap
down and ravished her[1].

I'm convinced that the tom cats break in from an alternate universe,
using some sort of warp technology. We never saw one until Kiya started
hurling pheromones around, then we had to barricade the doors. One
managed to get in, even though we didn't have a cat flap at the time. We
suspect more than one got in because some of the kittens were black and
the rest were ginger, despite their mum being Seal Point Siamese.

I shouldn't have had him done. I didn't realise that anybody would want to
have puppies with a non-KC colour who was a Fanconi carrier. His puppies
may not have been the wrong colour, and it's okay to mate a Fanconi
*carrier* with a Franconi-free opposite, as the puppies will all be
Franconi-free. Lexa is intact because she's a show dog. I had hoped to breed from her if Life had been Different. She's nearly 7 now, though, when she will
be a Senior, too old for her first litter. She will be able to be spayed then
(and will be to prevent pyometra) and can still be shown.

 One of the funniest cat sights I've ever seen was when we had a
queen  named Moth and doctored tom named Raffles.  Moth would offer
herself in  her most alluring manner and Raffles would assume the
position and then  look totally puzzled and say "Erm ... am I mean to
do something now?"

Definitely not, but I do have a lot of trouble with a cat flaunting
(1) on the desk between keyboard and monitor and hitting the power key!
(1) I think the word "flaunt" was created specifically to describe a
queen cat in season!

Agreed. I've never seen flaunting like our little Siamese the one time
she was allowed to come into season. I've never heard anything like it
either. She didn't know what she wanted, but she really, really wanted
it. So did the hoards of previously invisible tomcats who suddenly
became an invasive species.

We once had a cat who couldn't be spayed - her lungs were in a poor
state and that made her a poor risk for surviving the anaesthetic.

When on heat and confined to barracks, she would go up to the landing
window (they only one with a view of the outside world[1]) and wave her
rear end as a form of advertising[2].

[1] All other windows looked into our garden.
[2] Unlike Steve's cat, this one did know what she wanted, since she'd
had two litters before deciding to move in with us[3].
[3] Complete with one of her kittens from the first litter.

Yesterday had a website open, opened a Notepad file on my desktop to
make a note, went back to website and couldn't type anything in the
Search box because a continuous string of ~ symbols appeared.
Discovered this happened anywhere where text could be entered as soon as
I clicked. Closed all programs, unplugged keyboard - still a problem.
Closed down and restarted and I THINK there was still a problem - can't
quite remember. But tried to open the text file again and a screen
appeared telling me three times that the file was no longer there,
although I could see the icon. I deleted it (and emptied Recycle Bin)
and the ~ problem had gone away, so I presumed some problem with that
file had caused it. (An odd thing: Recycle Bin said it was emptying of
several thousand files, but in fact there were only a few in it.)
Last night and this morning no problems. Then all of a sudden got the ~
problem again. Managed to save and close everything and closed down.
Took the dog for a walk. About 45 mins later fired up the pc again and
everything appears to be working normally.
Have tried to Google for this problem but the only result was someone
who had letter p appearing continuously on his laptop. Everyone
suggested a sticky key, which the OP didn't think it was. I discounted
this in my case because it went on even when the keyboard was unplugged.
Does anyrat know what is going on? My first thought was a virus, but
Windows Defender has reported nothing.
