I am trying to use z/VM 5.3 Evaluation DVD from IBM but when I do the
command "ipl /cdrom/ZVM.ins" I get:

ipl /home/linux390/dasd/cdrom/ZVM.ins
HHCCP007I CPU0000 architecture mode set to ESA/390
CPU0000: SIGP Set architecture mode (12) CPU0000, PARM 00000001: CC 0
HHCCP007I CPU0000 architecture mode set to z/Arch
HHCCP011I CPU0000: Disabled wait state
PSW=00020001 80000000 0000000000009082

I am using the hercules 3.06.

I have no idea. Any suggestion ???

Thanks in advance,
Ventura

iirc this has been discussed in the group before and it doesn't (yet?) work.

Ian and all, it works just fine. But you MUST have a 3 gig machine size.

Using a MAC OS X build of a 64-bit Hercules from the latest SVN source on Snow Leopard
and a 3G memory model I have been able to IPL and execute successfully. The boot from
the DVD builds a RAM disk that VM runs on which is why a 3G memory is needed.

If you only have a 2 gig physical machine, that is the end of the
story. The Evaluation Edition requires at least a 3 gig LPAR. When I
did it, I ran it on an AMD X2 with 4 gigs for memory and I configured
Hercules for 3 gigs. Understand as Paul said previously, that this
version of VM runs out of a ram disk and not a "real" disk 3390 or FBA.

Nah. I have only 2 GB of RAM but I increased my swap partitions to 6GB and the
it worked. The machine virtually dies while the system is copied into memory
but once it's finished it becomes quite usable again. I then IPLed a 1GB
Linux system without any problems.

64-bit Linux will allow you to allocate as much memory as the sum of
physical RAM and swap space. In general, you don't want to have the host
system swap when running Hercules, because it suspends the entire Hercules
machine while doing so - but if you need 3 GB MAINSTOR and only have 2 GB
RAM, you don't have a lot of other options.

Strange question, but is there any way that hercules can intercept the
building of the RAM disk and direct it to an emulated disk volume
instead (thus decreasing the amount of RAM needed to run the z/VM
evaluation edition)?

Or having installed the system onto the RAM drive, use DDR to dump it to a
real DASD volume. I could not get this to work and suspect IBM would not want
it to!

The documentation that came with the system warned about the machine appearing to
hang for 15-20 minutes even on a z10.

Once you have the machine up and running, attach an FBA device like a 9336 that is about
500M in size. Logon on to MAINT, attach the device to MAINT. DDR the RAM disk to the
attach drive. DDR only the used portion, otherwise the system will crash.

Shutdown the system and IPL from the attached disk...

The problem is that SAIPL is unable to access the console.
The default console as defined by the z/VM Eval is the SYSG console (the
integrated 3270 console).
0000 SYSG
I had that already otherwise I could not have IPLed the RAM system. I also
had "0020 3270" for good measure.
or
Tell SAIPL to use another console !
LOADPARM CONSxxxx (where xxxx is the device number of the device you
wish to use).
I added the "LOADPARM CONS0020" and then it all worked and now I have two
consoles. Not sure what was happening there!

Next problem (at the risk of out-staying my welcome!):

10:51:24 HCPLNM053E OP1 not in CP directory
10:51:24 HCPLNM1151E OPERATOR 0191 has not been linked because it is not
within CP volume extents.

I think this means my DDR did not work properly. I did a "COPY ALL" and
received no error messages but I guess something is missing.

TIA
