Discussion:
Bluetooth keyboard and Apple fourth-generation TV

For those of you who have the new AppleTV, has any of you tried connecting it with an apple or other Bluetooth keyboard and what have your results been? I saw an article in some tech blogger other today commenting on the fact that typing stuff on the screen is now much more difficult, because they don't have the grid that they used to have for use with the remote. It is apparently one long line of letters and one long line of numbers. And the author was complaining that this was very much a pain in the butt. They did not say anything about using a Bluetooth keyboard, making me think that that might not be an option. So, what say you?

I've tried and it doesn't work. Unfortunately as you say the new
keyboard layout is even worse than the old one and even though the TV
has Siri you don't appear to be able to use dictation.

Cheers,
Ben.

Hi,

In my opinion, the Os, poticually Siri leaves a lot to be desired at
the moment, not to mention that there are some very obvious VO bugs
that really should have been fixed before release.
On a somewhat related note, I've found that if you keep the new remote
in your pocket it will sometimes activate various things as you walk
about. Yesterday I was tidying my bedroom with the remote in my pocket
and as a result, unbeknownst to me, the Apple TV (which is located in
my sitting room) purchased a film. Unfortunately the first I knew of
said purchase was when the film started playing, by which time it was
too late.

Cheers,
Ben.

Hi,

You have to enter your password for the first download yes, but the TV
gives you the option to remember your password for future downloads.
Since I didn't know that the remote would behave in the way it did I
let it remember my password as I live on my own and reasoned that
there wouldn't really ever be a situation where someone else would be
alone with the TV in my flat.

Cheers,
Ben.

Hi,

For future reference, don’t put it in your pocket while you’re cleaning. lmao. But seriously, they do need to bring back bluetooth keyboard support, or at the very least, the ability to use the remote iOS app.

The podcast said the remote iOS app works on the new Apple TV, just not
bluetooth keyboards. To be honest they will have to include it as even
without VoiceOver enabled one would still have to swipe through the
entire keyboard and press on the touchpad to insert. So even for a
sighted user it's a bit long winded.

Hi,
For future reference, don’t put it in your pocket while you’re cleaning. lmao. But seriously, they do need to bring back bluetooth keyboard support, or at the very least, the ability to use the remote iOS app.
Post by Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,
You have to enter your password for the first download yes, but the TV
gives you the option to remember your password for future downloads.
Since I didn't know that the remote would behave in the way it did I
let it remember my password as I live on my own and reasoned that
there wouldn't really ever be a situation where someone else would be
alone with the TV in my flat.
Cheers,
Ben.

It purchased a film? How did the keyboard purchase a film? Don't you have to
enter your password or at least use a touch ID or something? That really
sucks!

Hi,
In my opinion, the Os, poticually Siri leaves a lot to be desired at
the moment, not to mention that there are some very obvious VO bugs
that really should have been fixed before release.
Unfortunately the first I knew of
said purchase was when the film started playing, by which time it was
too late.
Cheers,
Ben.

Oh boy! That sounds like a big step back. Hopefully, they will fix this in

I've tried and it doesn't work. Unfortunately as you say the new
keyboard layout is even worse than the old one and even though the TV
has Siri you don't appear to be able to use dictation.
Cheers,
Ben.
Post by Mary Otten
For those of you who have the new AppleTV, has any of you tried connecting
it with an apple or other Bluetooth keyboard and what have your results
been? I saw an article in some tech blogger other today commenting on the
fact that typing stuff on the screen is now much more difficult, because
they don't have the grid that they used to have for use with the
remote.
It
is apparently one long line of letters and one long line of numbers.
And
the
author was complaining that this was very much a pain in the butt.
They
did
not say anything about using a Bluetooth keyboard, making me think
that
that
might not be an option. So, what say you?

Keep in mind, tvOS is a first-generation OS, even though it’s 95% based on an OS that’s been around for years. Of course there will be kinks, whether or not someone wants to be an early adopter and go through the growing pains is up to each individual.

Hi Brian and all, I agree with you. The term half baked Apples comes to mind at the moment. It has huge potential, and I'm sure it is going to be really good, but to me it's not even feeling like a 1.0 product right now. On the third gen, we used to use the Radio app, for listening to Internet radio stations including the one I manage, Mushroom FM. Apple hasn't included it with this release, and there's no equivalent app in the App Store that I've been able to find.
We listen to a lot of podcasts on the Apple TV. But Apple hasn't even done a version of its own Podcasts app, even though there was one for the third generation.
For both of these issues, Airplay is a work-around, but then you're involving another device, which in my view is a step backwards. Hopefully Downcast or Overcast will come to the platform soon for Podcasts, and TuneIn Radio would be great for Mushroom FM and similar stations.
When, in the podcast, it became clear to me that Bluetooth keyboard support is not in the software right now, I consoled myself by thinking that I could use the excellent Remote app for iOS and Watch OS, and control the TV that way. But you can't, Apple's own Remote app doesn't yet work with Apple's own brand new Apple TV.
It's also curious to me that despite the great storage and fast chip, you get no choice of voice in VO, unless you change your region.
On the third-party side, we've lost Netflix with audio description, and Hulu isn't accessible.
And as Sieghard has said in this thread and I pointed out in my podcast, Siri isn't supported here in New Zealand, even though New Zealand English is a choice in iOS.
I think all these things may well be addressed, but if you have a functional third generation unit and enjoy it for some of these functions, you might want to hang on a bit. For those who think it's fun to be on the cutting edge, this product shows a lot of promise and I'm sure it's going to get very good over time.

I think as more developers get a hold of the AppleTV it will get better, but the fact that you cannot pair a bluetooth keyboard, that Netflix left described video out as a option, and that typing is dreadful I would not run out and buy a AppleTv yet. Very disappointed in it so far.

Hello everyone. I was in the Apple Store yesterday and was told by a manager that an update to the software is coming which will enable the Apple bluetooth keyboard and the new Apple magic keyboard to work with the new Apple TV. He said the update should be out in days. FYI.

For those of you who have the new AppleTV, has any of you tried connecting
it with an apple or other Bluetooth keyboard and what have your results
been? I saw an article in some tech blogger other today commenting on the
fact that typing stuff on the screen is now much more difficult, because
they don't have the grid that they used to have for use with the remote. It
is apparently one long line of letters and one long line of numbers. And the
author was complaining that this was very much a pain in the butt. They did
not say anything about using a Bluetooth keyboard, making me think that that
might not be an option. So, what say you?

Well said, as usual, Jonathan. I think for those with a third-party Apple TV waiting a bit is the way to go or get the fourth gen Apple TV and enjoy it for what it offers and use it side by side with the third gen. But for many like me who never upgraded from the second gen to the third gen I think getting the new Apple TV is a no-brainer. The second gen Apple TV doesn’t support Netflix audio descriptions anyways and there is no Youtube app any more so even though the new Apple TV needs some major feature additions, I think it’s not much of a step back compared to the second gen with maybe the exception of Bluetooth keyboards, but maybe as somebody pointed out, this really is coming very soon although if it were coming within days or a week, why ship them without. Somehow I think Apple is not going to push an update before many customers have even received their unit.

Despite everything I read and hear from the early reviews, I am excited that mine has also shipped now and the UPS tracking information says it will be delivered next Friday so maybe it’s even going to be Thursday and definitely it’s earlier than November 11 to 13 which is what my order said originally.

I am really surprised the there is no native Podcast app or that the remote app isn’t working with the Apple TV. I just looked it up on the App Store and it says:

Note: Remote is only compatible with Apple TV (3rd generation or earlier)

It shows the app was last updatedin April, so hopefully we’ll see an update to that app very soon which will add support for the fourth gen Apple TV. It also appears that the reviews for the Remote app are dismal, the latest version gets 2 Stars. It’s interesting how Apple makes some stuff and has some services which work so well and are so easy to use and other products and services they just can’t seem to get right.

Sieghard

Sorry about that. I wasn't aware an update was forthcoming. Where did
you find this out? Again sorry for the unfair advice.

That is not fair to give that kind of advice. It has been said that an
update is coming to fix that issue so that bluetooth keyboards will be
able to be used.

I've tried and it doesn't work. Unfortunately as you say the new
keyboard layout is even worse than the old one and even though the TV
has Siri you don't appear to be able to use dictation.
Cheers,
Ben.

I don't see anything wrong with your advice. It's still true and sound.
You might want to ammend it by saying an update is forthcoming, but
until it's actually here, and we know it fixes these issues, I still
think this is good advice.

True, I saw that message, but hearing from someone that they heard from
someone that something is coming soon is not the same thing as an
official announcement from Apple. Apple is a large company, so I'm not
sure every representative in an Apple store knows what's going on with
the test and release teams in Apple for all of Apple's products. I would
not recommend something based on what an employee in an Apple store told
me. I'd wait until I knew it was available, it worked and it was
accessible. This isn't just true for Apple, but any large company.

That would match Jonathan's experience when he tried to pair a Bluetooth keyboard with his Apple TV foruth gen in his Jonathan at Large Podcast. It really appears that Apple has not added Bluetooth keyboard support. Let's all write to ***@apple.com and request they fix this, after all, I don't see how the hardware would not support it, it should just be a matter of a software update.

They did not say anything about using a Bluetooth keyboard, making me think that that might not be an option. So, what say you?

I'm not sure anyone needs to calm down. No one seems to upset over this
to me.

I'm not so sure it's coming, since I haven't seen an official
announcement from Apple, but it definitely won't be coming if Apple
doesn't know it's being asked for.

I don't see this as an accessibility issue though, so I'd be more
inclined to ask for it using Apple's normal feedback channels.

That would match Jonathan's experience when he tried to pair a
Bluetooth keyboard with his Apple TV foruth gen in his Jonathan at
Large Podcast. It really appears that Apple has not added Bluetooth
request they fix this, after all, I don't see how the hardware would
not support it, it should just be a matter of a software update.

It is my understanding that you can only have a maximum of 3 controllers/remotes connected to the Apple TV at any time. That means especially in families with kids where playing games may be an important part of having an Apple TV, it is my guess that these 3 controllers would be the remote that comes with the Apple TV and then maybe a couple of third-party game controllers.
While this may not be an accessibility feature in the strict sense, I really wonder how many sighted people actually have and would use a Bluetooth keyboard on an Apple TV. I do of course know people who use a keyboard with an iPad at home, but I don't think I know a single sighted iPhone user who uses a Bluetooth keyboard with an iPhone. Sighted users get to be quite fast at typing on the virtual keyboard especially now with predictive typing and I am afraid we may project our needs to the vast majority of users who would never even consider that it might be easier to type on a Bluetooth keyboard. I am sure Apple will make improvements to the on-screen typing experience and the fact is that once one has set up their accounts with user names and passwords, there probably is not that much typing required. I know how my wife uses our current Apple TV and she rarely types anything, when she is looking for something on Netflix she just browses the categories and even if she types, she can see the results popping up as she types and often she finds what she wants after typing 4 or 5 letters.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Well, I have seen a couple of reviews by sighted people in the mainstream press commenting on how difficult it is to use the on-screen keyboard with its new layout, where the letters are in a long long row. So, I suspect they will be doing something, whether that is to have Bluetooth keyboard support or make the remote app for the watch and the iPhone work, I don't know. But the way it is now is not satisfactory even for mainstream cited reviewer's. So something will happen

Plus, they’re trying to push the universal search experience with Siri, so I can kind of understand why they didn’t add it, even though yes, it is rather annoying, I’m not saying it isn’t. But from Apple’s point of view, they want people to use the Siri functionality more. And also, they added a recent keyboard that contains all the email addresses and account names you’ve typed before, so to be fair, you’d only need to enter your passwords with the annoying keyboard.

Hi Daniel,

They should leave out Bluetooth keyboard support because they want people to use SIRI when it appears in some countries SIRI on the Apple TV is not available, example, New Zealand. I don't know about Australia and Europe, but if they have Bluetooth support and they support all sorts of third-party game controllers not having support for Bluetooth keyboards makes little sense to me.

I have the new apple TV. I have tried three different bluetooth keyboards. Neither keyboard would pair. As a matter of fact, the apple TV didn’t appear to even recognize that I was trying to pair a device.

As Jonathan pointed out, Siri is not available everywhere. Furthermore, again based on mainstream reviews, it is apparent that the universal Siri search is not all that it's cracked up to be. sometimes it is a big fat bust. And in such cases, you would want another way of telling the device what it was you wanted. And if you paid a premium for this device, you would probably not like it that you were having to hunt and peck around a great big long row of letters to get that search job done. Apple charges more than everybody else. And people expect to get Quality in return. That includes well-thought-out design. Software, not just nice-looking hardware. You don't buy potential, unless it's known to be an early edition, and you're getting a discount. But that's not happening here. I am looking forward to see how this AppleTV develops. I hope it does great, because they are the only one that is really accessible. But not yet. I'm not giving them my money until they give me the product I should get for my money.

Hi Daniel,
They should leave out Bluetooth keyboard support because they want people to use SIRI when it appears in some countries SIRI on the Apple TV is not available, example, New Zealand. I don't know about Australia and Europe, but if they have Bluetooth support and they support all sorts of third-party game controllers not having support for Bluetooth keyboards makes little sense to me.

Hi Jonathan and all,

Well put Jonathan. I bought this for the living room and if it only had optical it would go in the bedroom and the third gen would get prime living room as I bought this primarily for described video on Netflix so to say I am a little pissed at Netflix is an understatement. Could you imagine if Netflix had left close captioning out of the app the world would be livid but no mention anywhere in the mainstream about Netflix leaving described video out. overall I am not reading stellar reviews of this by the main stream and considering sighted people have tons of other options like Roku, Amazon Fire and others Apple really laid an egg so far with this. Seriously this 4th gen took them years to come up with? Seriously, it is shocking how much stuff they left out. At least I am getting to listen to the Mets radio feed for the World Series through the MLB app. So that is something.
