Huge opportunity for Barca, but they manage to squander a 4 v 0 chance (maybe it was offside). Barca now starting to come out of their shell.

Shaqiri with 4 giveaways. It's astounding not one of them has been punished. He's completely raw from lack of match practice and a massive liability - needs to be subbed off.

Lack of composure on a few really cutting edge chances on Barca's part has kept this tie alive.

Liverpool doing good to go into half-time having scored and kept them out.

They didn't have an era. But with Ronaldo at 35 and Messi at 32 and neither being on the final for the first time since years, maybe their era of domination is finally over.. Their teams can still make it of course but their teams aren't head and shoulders above every other team anymore.

He's scored a couple at least that I've seen. He's right foot was underrated, even by himself, but it was not like an Owen left foot, totally useless.

He hardly used it because he favoured the left so much and had such great balance that he could stay on the left in almost any situation, but when it was required his right was more than a serviceable passer and slotter.

Youtube must have it on a compilation of his Serie A goals.
In this six-minute compilation, which includes probably about 50 goals, I was able to find exactly one:

There are also a couple of absolutely ridiculous left-footed rabonas done just so that he could avoid crossing with his right foot, and one instance in which he had the goal wide open at his right foot's mercy, but dribbled back onto his left allowing a defender and goalkeeper to come back and almost prevent the goal.

http://youtu.be/NBpu-M6kXCk

What's even more amazing is that if you look at him dribbling, he almost never touches the ball with the right foot. Did not touch the ball once with his right foot in his second goal versus England, nor in his second versus Belgium in the 1986 semifinal.

Possibly.

There are a couple more in this video (out of about 50 goals, again)

He did go to great lengths to avoid using his right foot, as in this header at foot height:

How left footed was Puskas, compared to Maradona? When Maradona's preference
for his left foot was a big topic in 1980s, Brian Glanville recalled watching
Puskas practise. Puskas was probably a manager by then. Danny Blanchflower
said to Glanville : when you have a left foot like that, you do not need
the other foot.

A number of headed goals as well, proving that when required, he had the full gamut of skills.

Nice. Notice goal number 39, against Brescia. Again, dribbles the goalkeeper to his right, has the goal at his right foot's mercy, but instead of tapping it in, slows down and switches foot so that he can roll it in with his left. Taking the piss again, in name of the famous Napoli-Brescia rivalry?
Post by Abubakr
A number of headed goals as well, proving that when required, he had the full
gamut of skills.
Also notable is high proportion of free kick goals.
I counted 114 goals (the counter goes up to 115, so I must have missed one):
36 open play left footed shots
4 open play right footed shots
7 headers
27 free kicks (including one corner kick)
40 penalties

So 8.5% of his open play goals during his time at Napoli were with his right foot.

For comparison, TransferMarkt has Messi at a total of 600 goals:

368 OP left footed
77 OP right
22 headers
42 Free kicks
70 PKs
21 other/unknown

That's 16.5% of open play goals with his right foot.

Let's do Cristiano Ronaldo, who I expect to be a lot more two-footed (and a lot more headed goals).

Total: 601

91 OP left
219 OP right
99 header
44 free kick
102 penalty
55 other/unknown

Not even that much: 22.2% of his open play goals are with his left foot, 24.2% are headers.

Last one: another famously left-footed player, Arjen Robben:

Total: 208 goals
114 OP left
11 OP right
11 header
5 free kick
16 penalty
51 other/unknown

In terms of scoring, Robben is even more one-footed than Maradona (only 8.0% of his goals are with his right). But of course a big chunk of that has to do with Robben's position on the field and his signature move.

So I stick by my claim that it is difficult to find a more one-footed player than Maradona.

Quite interesting how Messi has a lot more goals from open play than
Ronaldo. Though maybe if the unknowns get redistributed it becomes
insignificant.

A chunk of the Ronaldo unknowns are from his early seasons, when TransferMarkt's tracking was incomplete.

If you limit yourself to his Real Madrid years, he has 450 goals, of which 111 from set pieces (32 free kicks and 79 penalties): 24.7%

Messi has 112 set piece goals out of 600: 18.7%

Messi 368 77 17.30%

Origi with the early goal for Liverpool. Barcelona at sixes and sevens in dealing with the Liverpool press
So...
- No question who the best team in this competition is, and who should win the final
- well deserved over both legs
- but, Dembele, if you score...
- Barca lacks an edge, power, steel to make it past the last rounds
- Barca needs to recruit better than Dembele and especially Coutinho. Especially Coutinho looked nominally the perfect transfer, but he dulls the left side when he plays there
- Didn't like the booing of LS, after all he almost dragged this club to a title
-no Messi today. I don't remember seeing him so anonymous in ages. No space because of the high line of Liverpool, and whenever he had the ball 2, 3 players were on him. If he dropped back he found outlets, but Liverpool was always back fast enough
- Barca desperately need someone with pace on the left and/or center
- when will Klopp follow Suarez and Coutinho? ;)

Good news is I can plan for a bus tour this spring :D

Suarez seems like a spent force. Busquets well past his best. They are
in an in-between phase. On the other hand Allyson had to be good, and
they missed excellent chances. Plus on a luckier day for them Fabinho
could have walked.

Still think Man City and LFC are #1 and #2 in Europe this season. Barcelona was a questionable second candidate for #2, but as we saw today, they have two problems:

But Mane if you scored in the first leg. Or Salah. Ifs and buts belong in parallel universes.

- Barca lacks an edge, power, steel to make it past the last rounds
- Barca needs to recruit better than Dembele and especially Coutinho. Especially Coutinho looked nominally the perfect transfer, but he dulls the left side when he plays there
Dembele is a phenomenal talent, but he can't stay fit. Coutinho is a rat bastard and a schadenfreude queen. I hope he ends up at Chelsea or Atletico or something like that.

- Didn't like the booing of LS, after all he almost dragged this club to a title
I agree, and most LFC fans don't harbor the same ill sentiments for him that they do for Cuntinho. But he makes it so easy with his antics. I'm sure it'll be forgotten and he'll still be remembered fondly at Anfield.

Yep. They missed Dembele.

- when will Klopp follow Suarez and Coutinho? ;)
Never. Klopp is a man of romance, spirit, endeavor, and adventure, he isn't swayed by shallow earthly desires like money and prestige.

As besides he's German - bad weather and bad food don't faze him :-)

Good news is I can plan for a bus tour this spring :D
Match tix are already at 4 G-notes, and that doesn't include air, lodging, and merriment. It's looking like 6-8K all in for us USians.

Or I could just head down the street back to this place, where my heart was shattered into a thousand pieces last May: https://www.facebook.com/BootRoomNYC/

Origi with the early goal for Liverpool. Barcelona at sixes and sevens in dealing with the Liverpool press
BTW, while everyone is eviscerating Coutinho and Alba, can we give Shakira's boy-toy an honorable mention?

WTF was he doing on the equalizing goal, he literally just watched the ball float over him onto a completely unmarked Gini's head. And as the defensive leader he has to take blame for the entire team falling asleep on the corner for the fourth goal as well.

Lots an aging heads at Barcheatalona.

This has to be one of the more absurd combinations of first and second
leg scores. First leg Liverpool play great, has good chances, and
loses 3-0. Second leg Barcelona play well, has great chances, and
loses 4-0.

Overall 4-3 Liverpool was a fair result, but the distribution of the
goals was so disconnected from reality.

Barcelona lost twice with 3+ goals away two seasons ago, first 4-0 to PSG
and then to Juventus. Last season 3-0 to Roma. Now 4-0 to Liverpool. But
this is the first time they went out failing to protect a big lead from
the first leg. Last two seasons, they were thrashed in the first leg away.

Correction. Last year's Barcelona collapse in Rome was also in the
second leg, not the first leg. But Roma had lost the first leg 4-1,
and this year Liverpool had failed to score that away goal losing
3-0 in Barcelona.

Add to that the 7-0 aggregate we did on them in 2013!
