Must be all the NHRA fans wanting multiple qualy rounds, then quarters,
semis, and final. Why bother to 'race' after that?

Oh, right, so BOT can be commanded to pull over.

I don't think this is coming from Charlie. This is Liberty.

They are focused on increasing fans.

The only important question for them should be "will this increase the number of fans?" (without compromising safety.) Nothing else matters.

Consider this cost cap business. If the goal is parity between the teams then the end result is really that any given team could be on the podium for any give Gran Prix. IF that comes to pass will it increase the number of people attending and watching?

That isn't as simple a question as it might seem to be. There have been massive efforts in the US to achieve parity across our football league (the pointy ball that you hold, throw and catch kind of "football"...) But viewership has gone down.

Is this because people want to follow a dynasty? I don't know. What happens to the F1 fan base if there are not two or three dominant teams? Does it loose those fans and they drag the overall numbers down? Or does the chaos of parity bring in more fans.

I would argue that having a base of fans following the big three is better than the fickle masses who turn up for the Sunday show. But I'm a safety guy, not a sports marketer!

The number of fans is of no consequence. It's money they're chasing.

The team with the better drivers will continue to be at the top. Any
cost cap will exclude drivers, top designers, directors, etc pay.

People have a great choice of things to do in their spare time, going on
Failbook, playing computer games, doing drugs seem to be top of the list.

Whatever LM have in mind to promote F1 to a wider audience, they have
about 3 or 4 years to get it done, as the biggest attraction to
F1 will be retiring about then.

This us the only bit I disagree with. Fans = money. Fans are the ultimate source of ALL the money. If no one is watching, no tickets are sold, no PPV is sold, no adds are sold, promoters wont pay for rights and so on.

Liberty are chasing the eyeballs. They want them in the seats Friday, Saturday and Sunday; they want them paying for F1TV (or Sky or whatever) and they want the ratings for free OTA broadcasting so they can charge for the adverts.

Clearly they want the money but that flows from the fans.

Three or four quali sessions, matters not to me.

I'll just record it, skip the sessions until the very last couple of minutes
and watch to see who is eliminated.

Then watch most of the final quali session.

Four sessions = three ad breaks. Three sessions = 2 ad breaks.

I think that's the real equation.

So before you go on...

...are you advocating a return to a single qualifying session...

...where there will be cars on track for about 10 minutes out of the
allotted time?
