“They’ve been doing a lot of research among fans and this is one of the things that they feel the fans would like,” FIA race director Charlie Whiting explained
I don't think this is coming from Charlie. This is Liberty.
It still requires his approval.
Post by D MunzThey are focused on increasing fans.
The only important question for them should be "will this increase the number of fans?" (without compromising safety.) Nothing else matters.
The number of fans is of no consequence. It's money they're chasing.
Post by D MunzConsider this cost cap business. If the goal is parity between the teams then the end result is really that any given team could be on the podium for any give Gran Prix. IF that comes to pass will it increase the number of people attending and watching?
The team with the better drivers will continue to be at the top. Any
cost cap will exclude drivers, top designers, directors, etc pay.
Post by D MunzThat isn't as simple a question as it might seem to be. There have been massive efforts in the US to achieve parity across our football league (the pointy ball that you hold, throw and catch kind of "football"...) But viewership has gone down.
As us British know, merkin fotbul (aka Catch) is shite
Post by D MunzIs this because people want to follow a dynasty? I don't know. What happens to the F1 fan base if there are not two or three dominant teams? Does it loose those fans and they drag the overall numbers down? Or does the chaos of parity bring in more fans.
People have a great choice of things to do in their spare time, going on
Failbook, playing computer games, doing drugs seem to be top of the list.
Post by D MunzI would argue that having a base of fans following the big three is better than the fickle masses who turn up for the Sunday show. But I'm a safety guy, not a sports marketer!
Whatever LM have in mind to promote F1 to a wider audience, they have
about 3 or 4 years to get it done, as the biggest attraction to
F1 will be retiring about then.
