102 manual.

Does anyone know where I can download a copy of the manual for the 102 that each page of it is not a collection of image files? The only way to retrieve text from an image file is to retype it. Bummers.

I have gotten it from two different locations but both files are identical.

Thanks.

I don't know about the 102 manual but I have a copy of
the 100 manual burned to CD that I found online once.

copy the the 100 manual just let me know.

Is it in text format so that one could get bits and pieces of it as needed?

You'll sell me a copy or let me download it as a favor?

why would you want the manual in text format? there are numerous parts of
the manuals that don't translate to text (such as type symbols). in order to
read the manual properly some of the symbols would have to be represented as
pictures anyway.

That's right. I first bought a Model 100 back in 1985
and it was stolen in 1987. I bought another one in
1989 and still use it a LOT! When the 102's came out
I was thinking about getting one but I took one look
at the manual that came with it and thought that I
should hang on to the 100's manual because it has a
lot more in it. Sure, there's minor differences
between the two computers so it's no big deal. The
manual is online somewhere and I downloaded it before
my sister bought a 100 off of ebay. She didn't get a
manual with hers so I told her to use the one that I
downloaded. I also have a copy of the book 'The Model
100 Subroutine Cookbook' that I downloaded.

Ummm... It's either MS-Word or a PDF file. I think
it's PDF. I'll have to look it up. It should be in
my PC or Model 100 file on CD. I have a ton of
programs and things that I was downloading for my 100,
Tandy 1400HD, and my Sharp PC-1600 as well as stuff
for the Casio FX880P.

Aside from the fact that I hate Adobe Acrobat Reader and .pdf files in general. I was looking for a text version of the manual because I can remove what I may need to examine and put it in a smaller file and put it on the desktop or collect from it what I need and put into a smaller file. The whole manual in image format in .pdf is huge and the whole thing is loaded at once and consumes lots of system resources. Plus Adobe is always wanting to make an internet connection.

What is 'The Model 100 Subroutine Cookbook' about? I'm doing good just to work with the basic codes.

[OT] Why ? PDF is an open format, a lot of programs (all free) can read it
and some can write it (some free). I is not a proprietary/closed format like
Word. Actually, what Word ? Word 5, WordWin 6, Word 95, Word 97, Word
2000/2003 ?
Post by JUST ME
I was looking for a text version of the manual because
I can remove what I may need to examine and put it in

Text is best.

I have a model 100/102 Quick Reference Manual in RTF-format. I could re-work
it to text. Interested ? It is veriy basic, but if you know your machine,
it's all you need. I could mail it to you, assuming your e-mail address is
correct.

The Subroutine Cookbook is full of subroutines that
you can put in programs and some of them are really
cool! I've known about the book for years and if you
want my copy that I have on CD just let me know. The
books I want were put out by the Waite Group and there
were 4 of them for the Model 100. I used to have all
4.

The target of your download link is

http://www2.asub.arknet.edu/wade/model100.htm

I have already been there and downloaded that previously. The pages of the manual are images, same as a photograph and I can't extract text from it unless it is visually and I retype it.

I use TextBridge 8.0 and had to OCR (Optical Character Recognition) all of my typewriter pages for my novel. Whoever did that .pdf job on the manual had no need to OCR so they just made the book pages to be images since the text had already been manufactured in the first place.

If I could get my hands on a used manual I could do it the other way with retrievable text and any images or symbols in the manual would be the same as a screen shot in a .doc, a picture in a text file with no link to an image. You know anyone that would mail me one? I'll do that and send it back.

Print the manual and rescan it to OCR. You'll also have a printed

http://www2.asub.arknet.edu/wade/model100.htm
I have already been there and downloaded that previously. The pages
of the manual are images, same as a photograph and I can't extract
text from it unless it is visually and I retype it.
Post by JUST ME
I use TextBridge 8.0 and had to OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
all of my typewriter pages for my novel. Whoever did that .pdf job on
the manual had no need to OCR so they just made the book pages to be
images since the text had already been manufactured in the first
place.
Post by JUST ME
If I could get my hands on a used manual I could do it the other
way with retrievable text and any images or symbols in the manual
would be the same as a screen shot in a .doc, a picture in a text
file with no link to an image. You know anyone that would mail me
one? I'll do that and send it back.

I tried that. The original resolution of the images produces gibberish. Regardless of the printer setting it produces blurred text and there is no way to get around that. A very bad job if it was intended to do anything other than be looked at in .pdf form.

I would rather scan a used manual. It won't produce gibberish if I click on that font to interpret and the end product is easily manipulated and it won't be .pdf. I can retain both editable (add your own notes)/copyable text (swipe some) and images in the manual but it won't be a duplicate of the manual format but all of the content.

To include the images from the book I would use WordPad and make it a .doc. .doc will hold an image in the form of a screenshot without having to link to an image like in html or embedding the pic. That way anyone could look at it without buying software and using factory Windows programs.

I don't want Windows ! I'm into "minimal computing" and I want to minimize
as much as possible the use of MS products, and certainly Windows. So I like
the concept of Deskmate, but I don't like the DM wordprocessor, And I
haven't found a good WP that fits on a single 720 KB disk + DOS. For use on
my 1400 LT, or my 1100 FD e.g.

So I'm interested in that program Ron mentioned: WriteRight. Problem is, a
search by Google(tm) only reveals protective screencovers for PDA's!

I used to use PFS: Professional Write. It's a good little DOS-based
word processor. The only down-side is that it will only work with
files < 64K bytes in size, but it does fit on a 720 KB floppy disk.

Also you can consider EZX-WRITE, which is DOS-based shareware. Likely it's
still available. The 16 files (some documentation and some shareware
legalities) total a mere 297,180 bytes.

Or, if you can find it, Professional Writers Package (PWP) is excellent
DOS-based profitware. Obtaining a single-user license might be a tad
expensive. The commonly used pieces of this package likely would fit on a
(DOS) boot diskette. Edix is the editor piece. Spellix is the word speller
piece. Wordix (or maybe the name is Formatix) is the formatter that
produces paginated galley output that's printer-specific.

You guys got me thinking about my use of PC-Write by Quicksoft. On two of
the DOS machines in the lab I have both v2.71 and v3.02. I have often
wondered if there were newer versions, and of course if there was a Windows
version. Then I started looking for my original disks and my manuals. I
found a 1-disk set for version 2.6 and the 3-disk set for version 3.0, and
I know I have the manual around here, too, cause I support shareware. And
I especially support PC-Write. A wonderful editor... IMHO... of course.

Then I wondered if any of the old DOS libraries were still available via
the Internet. I went to google and searched for "dos shareware library"
and sure enough I ran into http://www.filelibrary.com/. That's great! I
searched there and found good old PC-Write...

PC-Write 4.10 great WP by Quicksoft 1/5 Docs,support,thesaurus $69,
WizKit+$30, +ship Full-featured, adaptable, easy menus, fast! Power:
speller, mail merge, windows, columns, layout, graphics, index, endnotes,
more. Adaptable: feature levels, key/button macros, 200+ options on menus;
have it your way!

I noted that there are 6 .zip files in the archive and are named

While there I noted other great editors, like...

Program Editor v0.99 - Freeware text editor manages copy and paste, undo,
file selection, and large files better than DOS edit.com.

PEDIT 3.30 - short for Program Editor, is similar to the DOS EDIT program,
but more powerful, and with many additional features for programmers. It
includes pop-up tables, copy and past to other Windows applications, long
filenames, 28/43/50 lines mode, word wrap, spell checker, thesaurus, and
much more. Freeware. (C) 1995-1998 by Paul Brand.

That would be a good choice as well, if you can find it.

Frankly, I limit myself to text, RTF and PDF files for any
documentation I do for my own systems. Text because, well, it's just
text! pretty much anything can read it. RTF because that's a fairly
well established standard for sharing files. Almost every operating
system has at least one application that will read RTF. PDF is my last
choice, mainly because it's a "read only" format. Yes, if it was
generated from text, it can be converted back, but if the PDF was
created from scanned images, you're pretty much out of luck.

I suppose my use of Linux and other open source tools got me started
with this. I only use the Microsoft Word format now for things like
resumes. Even then, I use OpenOffice.org, instead of Microsoft Office.
It's way cheaper ;-)

.doc files do embed the picture within the file. I would store the (monochromatic, line-art)
pictures as a 1-bit GIF file using common image programs, to save disk space, or
use PNG format if one doesn't already have GIF utilities. Do NOT use JPG format
for this, since the lossy algorithm is poorly adapted for this type of image
[it's better suited for photographs than line art].

Alternatively, store the image in a format that can be displayed on the Model T
computer, and submit your program for displaying the image, if it doesn't use
one of the existing graphics programs.

To include the images from the book I would use WordPad and make it a .doc. .doc
will hold an image in the form of a screenshot without having to link to an
image like in html or embedding the pic. That way anyone could look at it
without buying software and using factory Windows programs.

Yes .wri is still good but few people know that unless they have one of those computers or came up with one. I have one in the other room. Tip: When you take an .rtf and put it in the 3.11 don't convert it to .wri or the hidden .rtf formatting code will permantly show unless you edit it out.

David
Post by JUST ME
The target of your download link is
http://www2.asub.arknet.edu/wade/model100.htm
I have already been there and downloaded that
previously. The pages of the manual are images, same
as a photograph and I can't extract text from it
unless it is visually and I retype it.
I use TextBridge 8.0 and had to OCR (Optical
Character Recognition) all of my typewriter pages
for my novel. Whoever did that .pdf job on the
manual had no need to OCR so they just made the book
pages to be images since the text had already been
manufactured in the first place.
If I could get my hands on a used manual I could do
it the other way with retrievable text and any
images or symbols in the manual would be the same as
a screen shot in a .doc, a picture in a text file
with no link to an image. You know anyone that would
mail me one? I'll do that and send it back.

It most likely does that by removing the text characters from the .pdf

Unfortunately this .pdf manual in question that I downloaded does not contain text but it appears to, it only contains images of text such as if you took a picture of a newspaper.

The Subroutine Cookbook is full of subroutines that
you can put in programs and some of them are really
cool! I've known about the book for years and if you
want my copy that I have on CD just let me know. The
books I want were put out by the Waite Group and there
were 4 of them for the Model 100. I used to have all
4.

Ummm.. that's not something that can be done with any version of
Windows.
(Well, I suppose you could run some of the files through a
dis-assembler. If they're not compressed or otherwise obfuscated you
might get something from them. Note, however, that such
'reverse-engineering' is usually included in the software license list
of prohibitions.)

You are correct that with Linux you have access to the source code for
most of the software supplied with the various distributions.
This is not true for the core files and utilities supplied by Microsoft
for their operating systems.

Applications and utilities written in BASIC, QBasic / QuickBASIC,
Assembler, C, Pascal, etc., may have the source code supplied or
available. It depends and depended on the programmer and / or the
company ultimately supporting the programmer.

as much as possible the use of MS products, and certainly Windows. So I like
the concept of Deskmate, but I don't like the DM wordprocessor, And I
haven't found a good WP that fits on a single 720 KB disk + DOS. For use on
my 1400 LT, or my 1100 FD e.g.
So I'm interested in that program Ron mentioned: WriteRight. Problem is, a
search by Google(tm) only reveals protective screencovers for PDA's!

Shades of WriteRight from circa DOS2.1. I wonder
how little Bill paid the
owner of WriteRight to slap a Windoze shell around
it and call it his own?
Never hear of it. Is it downloadable somewhere ?

Or you could use the old Write program from Win
3.x It can be read by
many other programs and it supports images etc.

I have 3.11 Windows For WorkGroups with DOS 6 on a UNISYS PW2 Advantage. I piddle with it once in a while but I don't use it, or it's programs. It has Corridor 7 Alien Invasion (CAPSTONE SOFTWARE) and an unregistered copy of QuickMenu. Everything else on it is standard factory issue Windows.

I have a friend who has Windows 3.11 on disk. I'll
ask him if I can get a copy. One reason I want it is
because you can look at the programing. I want to
learn Linux and figure that I could start the same way
I learned Basic. Pick the program apart and see what
part does what and why and how it does it. :)

Or get one of those old computer from goodwill that
has 3.11 and remove the hard drive that way the OS
should be original and intact instead of having two
OS's on your hard drive.

Hello. Yes it would be nice to have. Especially on
my Dos Tandy 1400HD computer.
I just got done looking at what I have on CD and I
found the PDF to Text application. I'm going to try
it out.

I found it and tried it out on my mom's XP computer.
It wouldn't work. I'm now using my sister's computer
and I'll try it on hers as well as my nieces computer.
I tried to upload it to somebody but apparently it
wouldn't do anything.
