Currently got some serioussssssssssssssssss GAS. Shopping for a warm
woody mellow sounding archtop. How do you like your new Royale? Is
that the Greg Bennett model JZ3 0r 4? Also shopping for a little
practice amp to use with my other guitars. Know anything about the
Alesis SPitfire 60? 12-step program wont help here since while I have
acknowledged the problem, I REFUSE to seek a cure!

This is a first! I've not bought anything since my vintage Polytone amp -
months back, but I did sell my Deluxe Reverb, if that counts --- sorta like
reverse GAS :)-

Ibanez AS-120. Fantastic guitar. Set it up with half-rounds. Sweet and
modern jazz sound. Six other guitars have stayed in their cases since.

Personal opinion and all, but my theory on the Artstars is that Ibanez
discontinued the line because market-weasels figured they were too good for
the price. They introduced the less expensive Artcores - which are fine
guitars but not quite on par with the Artstars. They did a makeover on the
dressier AS-200 and introduced the JSM line at mucho dolares more.

Anyhoo, procured for $355 on eBay. I played one head-to-head against a new
ES-335 before I bought this one. The Gibby was good. The Ibanez was better.

No more GAS for now.

I sort of ordered a new guitar (Schecter Robert Smith Signature), but it
won't even be out of production until late December, early January.

hum. New plain white pickguard looks a lot better than the ugly

Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro Plus w/footpedal. Having immense fun with
this thing!! Pedalboard cases from Angstrom (on Ebay) to contain the
newly-expanded jazz pedalboard setup.

Electronic parts to try to add synch out to Boss RC-20 Loop Station.
Matthias Grob (inventor of the Echoplex) designed an RC-20
modification to allow an Echoplex to synch to the RC-20. I'm trying to
make a slightly different version of this that will only send a signal
when the RC-20 is actually playing sound. I haven't gotten it to work
yet.

Cool, thanks for the suggestion. I finally got my RC-20 circuit to
work, but it didn't help because of the way the synch works on the
Echoplex. Apparently it only pays attention to the first two synch
pulses it receives when recording, then after that uses its internal
timing and ignores further synch pulses. This has the result of
causing your loop to get farther and farther off if you try to record
something long like a 32-bar form. Maybe I can avoid that problem if I
use the MIDI synch instead of the BeatSync jack.

You could try feeding it a midi clock signal from a sequencer or drum

just checked the spec on my Yamaha UD Stomp, but it doesn't send or receive

My L-5 seriously cut back on my GAS attacks. I can pass likely-looking music
stores without (well, almost without) a second thought. I actually believe
that I own too many guitars. I plan to sell some soon. Keep your eyes peeled
for my FS notice re: Blonde Washburn Orleans, '77 Ibanez-made Howard
Roberts, fretless Kubicki bass, handmade acoustic bass, probably more. Let's
keep that GAS bubbling!

Do you have kids? And nice furniture?

i think the real situation is that some of us boys-grown-large would
rather by a third guitar than have furniture that doesn't look like
Early Goodwill Colonial, or kids wearing high-top pants. It's not like
that's a real decision, but a default after the purchase. If if you
don't have somebody watching the details it can happen...

That's said from a guy whose wife is totally supportive, and we have no
kids and tolerable furniture.

You must be thinking of some other Pete. I have a bicycle shop, not
quite a "get rich quick" operation to put it mildly. I mostly dispose
of what passes for my income at the local supermarket. If it wasn't
for cheap guitars I wouldn't have no guitars at all. It's just blind
luck that I also have no talent.

when one buys the 4th guitar or amp, since fairly good "style of

to her friends about those - something like: "Did I tell you, Fred
got a beautiful new guitar to play even PRETTIER music for me...it
doesn't even have to plug in like his others do."

What one must do instead, is to see this crucial next piece as an
important opportunity rather than fear. Just bring it right into the
kitchen & set it (and yourself) down quietly. Doesn't matter whether
it's a plastic uke, a D'Aquisto, or a Dumble.

All hell will break loose, and every sin you ever committed since your
first meeting will be perfectly recounted in complete detail. She
will remind you that her car is 14 years old & that she's still
wearing the same clothes she had in high school. Her mother's
original advice to marry someone else may crop up, as may the name of
an aggressive domestic law firm. However, if you just stay quiet &
don't fight back, eventually she will say something like: "You don't
care about ME - you only care about ALL THOSE GUITARS (amps,
whatever)!!!"

You have just won. Your GAS goodies are no longer 4 guitars, or 6
amps - but are now a SINGLE COLLECTIVE ENTITY: "ALL THOSE." So since
it no longer matters how many you have, you are now free to amass as
many as you like. All you need now is one, simple thing:

An expandable guitar rack and amp shelf.

Put all your goodies on them, but be sure to leave 1 or 2 empty
spaces. As you acquire more, just expand it - but always leave the
same empty spaces in relation to them. Your wife will no longer take
much interest in the gear - but she will ALWAYS notice the empty
spaces! This works very well.

One day your sweetheart will say something to you like: "You know,
Honey, I must be slowing down with age; it used to take me 10 minutes
to dust your guitars & amps, and now it takes me almost an hour!" :-)

<grin>This is a VERY bad & wimpy thing to do. A woman will never
respect a man who is a sneak. Usually, this temptation is strongest
when one buys the 4th guitar or amp, since fairly good "style of
music" excuses can be made for the first 3. She may even be bragging
to her friends about those - something like: "Did I tell you, Fred
got a beautiful new guitar to play even PRETTIER music for me...it
doesn't even have to plug in like his others do."
What one must do instead, is to see this crucial next piece as an

I picked up the Behringer line. Like most dedicated
junkies, I decided to become a dealer a long time
ago.

I mean - why fight it? ;-)

Any of you guys need a Behringer piece, let me know.
I don't know if I can beat GC (probably not, on the cheaper
stuff, but possibly on the upper end of the line) but I *can*
tell you how to operate it after you buy it. ;-)

I ordered one of the smallest guitar amps - the little
vintage-looking thing with brown tolex. I want to see
how the cheapie looks inside before I buy any of the
more expensive ones.

I also laid in a supply of all the tube-based rackmount
processors (Tube Composer, Tube Ultragain, Tube
Ultrafex, Tube Ultra-Q, etc.) and when I get time, I'll
take 'em apart, check the guts, and give 'em a listen.
Keep your eyeballs peeled for the reviews. There are
also a couple of little "table-top" tube mike preamps,
one with digital modeling, which I'll be tasting. Both
of 'em are less than a C-note.

Some of the small mixers now feature "smart"
power supplies - internal, *not* wall-warts or
line-lumps - which automatically adjust to any
supply voltage/freq anywhere in the world.
This means that if you have a gig in a country
with different juice than your own, all you need
to do is put the right plug for the region on the
end of the line cord. Pretty slick! ;-)

had stolen :-( having no luck at all and I work in a music shop , damned
frustrating ...and the new US Fenders are piss poor these days, not keen on
the Tyler headstock and the Andersons just dont have the vibe

I bought a second late 70s BC Rich 10 string. I had the extra 4 off on my
old one for a while, and realized that it was my favorite 6 stringer just
like that. But I couldn't be without a 10, so now I can have both, all set
up right for the appropriate neck tension.

It was an extravagance, for sure, but you gotta treat yourself right, or
what's the use?

Hi ####,

I'll pitch my earlier suggestion of having a cutaway put into your 125. I
did it to my c. 1932 L-50 with no qualms because it was a beater when I
bought it. The chance of 125's becoming historically significant collectors'
items is not great. But the vintage police will still hate you.

I missed out on a couple of US strats ('79, '76) and a really nice looking
Mexican strat (mid to late 80's) on Ebay, but I did manage to win a very
nice Korean Tokai Love Rock for just over £270, mint condition and never
gigged; I'm still looking for that ideal Strat though.

What's there? Fenders?
Never had one of those.
I'm more likely to head for Bozeman or Nashville.

I emailed Gibson back when the controversy over the new 'policy'
regarding online sales was breaking.. and ended up gabbing with
an exec. We ended up designing a Mandolin pick together.

I was reaching for my book a few days later:
"Gibson Guitars - 100 Years of an American Icon",
when I realized the author had the same name as my new friend.
I looked over at my 'Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars' and
saw that he also co-wrote that.
He's also the Mando player for the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble..
and evidentally quite humble.

I wouldn't mind making a pilgrimage there.
I never stray far from the Keys though.

A lot of them work 2 jobs... then leave in frustration after a year or so.
Smallest 1 bedroom apts. start at about $750. Nicer ones are about $1000 a month.
A two bedroom apartmen or house rental will start at about $1500 to $2000.
It hard to find even those deals, during the 'season'. ( December to April, or so )

A lot of people live on boats.. but they're beginning to`charge even for anchoring.
I lived on boats for about 10 years.

Mobile Homes on 'non-waterfront' lots can occasionaly be found as low as $50K sometimes.
You can buy one in a 'park' cheaper.. but you'll still pay about $500 a month for rent.

They're always out West somewhere.

It's hard to imagine living in the real world again.

Did you not see the 4 hurricanes that were bearing down on us
in the last 6 weeks?

Security is not a good word to use in conjunction with
owning a home down here, or many other places in Florida, it seems?

I was building a pool for this dude who had just retired from Readers Digest,
about 12 years ago. His property cost about a million or so.
Right across the street was a lot that sold for 6 thou.
If you're not on the water, you can still find deals.

However, getting a building permit is another whole can of worms.

You can afford a lot larger 'monthly expense' too,

Another good reason to rent.

The Stingray house got the big ceiling dome messed up in
Hurricane Georges and the insurance company only offered
a fraction of the repair cost.
What they gave didn't even equal the premium they paid for one year!

A lot of insurance companies also went bankrupt, after Hurricane Andrew.
You're better off without it.

Actually Ra, thats one thing I dont and wont allow!
He is a big baby, & was up here all afternoon with
me... I have special home'made toys for him to kill
& destroy and he knows just what he can chew &
can't!! Now screaming? Thats an entirely different
issue!
He's potty' trained, and speaks fairly well too 8^)'..

Yeah, Babe's toilet trained too... but Mikko's got him beat on the talking.
All he will say is 'Hello'. When he was a baby, he said; "Yum yum",
clear as a bell.. but not anymore.

Talk about 'on topic', I got distracted and left a Gibson in the room with him once.
Luckily, the pegs were all he desttroyed.

I wont get into my gloat'mode.. 8^)' but yea Mikko speaks fairly well
but of course [a] he had 2 yakkity Macaws with him for 6yrs [b] they
talked up a storm so I cant take the credit for Mikko's talking abilities.

I have been extremely lucky here! When I had 2 Macaws, & a Too
here I thought I'd have some guitar damage but I didnt. Sadly letting
my 2 macaws go was not a happy day in my life but with my mother
dieing I had no choice.. It was better for the 2 Macaws as I couldnt
take care of my mom + 3 birds. So I just had to give them to 2 new
loving families, but they're both quite happy now and this makes me
feel good.. cheers bird brained tee'..

Epiphone Firebird VII (2000?), eBay $360.
Off-white/ebony f'board/gold hardware. Angelically gorgeous! No case (?).

The basic structure seems to be not just okay, but actually rather nice.
Seems strong. I wish the frets were larger. Keys are good.

Adjusted truss rod; lightly leveled and crowned frets. Replaced Epi bridge
with Schaller roller bridge (nice machining, that!), and scratch-built a
Delrin nut for it. Harmonized setup. Moved strap button from rim to heel.

Bought Gibson Firebird case (slightly shopworn) used. Replaced Vibrola
handle screw with Gibson equivalent. Replaced 3-way switch.

It plays really, really sweet, and stays in tune very nicely, but ...
it still sounds like crud. It's okay if overdriven, but it just won't do any
clean sounds to challenge my Strat.

So, I'm replacing the pickups, pots, wiring and jack:

I have a '80's-vintage Gibson Firebird pickup for the neck position.

I have a DiMarzio Mini Humbucker for the bridge, in gold, on the way.

For the middle, I have a GFS Retrotron "Memphis" bridge pickup in gold that
claims to be real "jangly." The middle pickup is mostly just for spice and
special effects on this guitar, so it can afford to be just a tad radical
and complex.

My overall idea is to have a rich "tone machine," with some original "mojo"
(whatever that means). It can always be overdriven. I have some nice pots
lined up, and I'm just dangerous enough with a soldering iron to do this up.

By the time I'm done with it, I will have spent nearly $800 on this Epi, but
I think it will have been well worth it. An equivalent Gibson would be what,
$1,800 new? $1,200 used?

I'm fine w/mine, and havin' fun!

I bought a Yamaha UD Stomp, but tried an Orange Rockerverb amp and 4x12 cab,
a Soldano SLO100 and 4x12 cab (and 2x12 cab) and also an Engl 50 watt head
through an Engl 2x12 slant cab. All nice amp/cab combos but the Engl was a
relative bargain. Looking to try a Carlsbro Top 50 and a Matamp mini stack
next.

Also bought a Panasonic NV-GS11 DV camcorder. Currently good prices on these
and well specced for a budget model providing you don't need DV-in. Some
competing budget models don't have a mic-in socket , don't include a remote
control and can't replace a tape whilst on a tripod.

which is also the dual piezo / soundhole mic system.

Non cutaway / non pickup models seem to be going
for about $2500, used, which is around what I'll be asking,
once I've had a chance to play with it for awhile.
