She Done Me Wrong - Whips

From the Flair label in 1954 comes one side of an exciting and
EXCELLENT r&b vocal group double-sided stormer from the Flairs (here
under one of their several alter egos). I actually give the edge to
the "Pleadin' Heart" side
But both are totally smokin'---and NEITHER was in any previous contest

Backed by "The Four Steps Of Rhythm" Bill Johnson's very rare (and
very good) 1959 Little Richard styled bopper was one of the very few
releases on the miniscule hole in the wall operation that was Talos
Records in Augusta Ga.
BTW later Bill Johnson went on to become half of the "Sam & Bill" duo
who had "For Your Love" and several other records out in the
1960's,some of them for Johnny Nash's Joda outfit

I like several calypso things ("Day-O" etc)---but sadly this "May May"
isn't one of them. Released on Trinidadian RCA in 1960 according to
what I have

On the GM label of Gladewater,Texas several sources (including the YT
clip) date this old style bopper as a 1962 release but I believe it
came out in 1963 purely on the basis that an earlier GM # was reviewed
in a Billboard issue that year. Its good but to the everyman it must
have sounded way primitive and totally out of place in 1963.

The mysterious "Hunki Dori" (sic) may (or may not) be the black WLOK
deejay of that name aka (in the 50's anyway) as Ruben Washington.
According to the Sun session files as well as a black backing ensemble
the white Sid Manker who was responsible for the catchy guitar riff
throughout Bill Justis' original "Raunchy" also played on the session.
"Why Don't You Use Your Head" is just one of some 10 (at least) tracks
recorded by the group at 706 Union Av Memphis during 1958. None of
them were ever released by the label and "Why Don't You...." lay
dormant in the vaults for decades until finally released by Charly
Records in the UK in 1978 on the album below
