Ask EU: Domain hosting recommendations wanted

I've just heard, from a friend who also uses them, that Just the Name is
closing down on 1st July, so I need to find a new domain host (as does
my friend). All I need is a domain host, with email forwarding, I don't
need any webspace.

I was wondering whether any umrats could recommend a new home for my
domain? Any suggestions, including companies to avoid, will be
gratefully received.

If there are any other rats who use them and who, like me, hadn't heard
yet, there's more info at:

I've been with Virtual Names for several problem-free years.

Similarly, I've used GoDaddy for many years without problems. Largely

I use 123-reg for domain registration and forwarding for five domains.
The websites are actually hosted on eukhost. Both have been fine with no
problems. I would probably change the registration to eukhost if I could
be bothered but CBA at the moment. The costs add up to the same and they
both work. Eukhost is brilliant at webhosting - if things go wrong there
is always someone to help.

And all the otherrats who have made suggestions (www.1and1.co.uk,
www.heartinternet.uk [no .co.?], www.virtualnames.co.uk): I too may be
looking for someone, and am more interested in there being someone to
help at any time, the help being someone who I can actually talk
technical with, than minimum price. I really mainly want just forwarding
(so that emails to <anything>@<mynewdomain> get forwarded to
<thesamething>@<myusername.plus.com>), though it seems daft not to put a
little website at a domain I "own".
So I'd be interested in recent good and bad experiences. One that was
recommended (in demon.service) about a year ago, Tsohost, I just called
this evening, and was most disappointed to get a lady whom I had
difficulty asking things. (_Not_ a language/race/gender problem: I have
had similar problems conveying concepts to native English males; and I
currently actually work with a couple of non-native-speakers at work,
with no problems of concept conveyance.)

I don't know, I haven't had any formal notification either. According
to the FAQ, you shouldn't lose out financially, your registration will
still be active after you transfer it to a new host, so you shouldn't
have to pay twice.

This bothers me:

Will I receive a refund?

No. Any time remaining on your domain registration will be carried
across to your new provider.

What if the customer no longer wants to be provided for?

I am reminded of when I used to subscribe to Byte
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_%28magazine%29). When publication
was about to come to an end, the publisher told me that I could have one
of a number of other publications in its place. There was no mention of
a refund. When I asked for one, they gave me one (ooh er missus) but I
wonder how many subscribers thought that they were obliged to take
another magazine.

Thanks everyone, for the assorted recommendations; you've given me a
good few suggestions to start looking at. Like jpeg, good customer
support would be a significant factor in choosing a new host. Hopefully
I'll get some feel for that when I contact them to check exactly what
they do/don't support.

Having been looking at one or two of the suggested hosts, I've realised
that there are a couple of other questions I need to include in my
searches. Do they offer catch-all email forwarding (several seem to
only be prepared to forward a few, predefined, email addresses) and do
they support withholding your personal data from WHOIS, without extra
charge. I was quite taken aback to see that 123-reg charge £4.99pa for
this - more than the cost of my domain!

Not surprisingly, there's a thread about this on the Plusnet Forum (at
<https://community.plus.net/t5/Everything-else/Just-the-name-is-closing/td-p/1405928>)
and a couple of hosts which have been mentioned are

probably some others; it's worth making sure you're talking about what

ISTR that I promised to let umra know which domain host I chose to move

I've just migrated to <https://www.daily.co.uk/>, and everything seems
fine. I chose them because they support Catch All addressing (having
anything I like before the @) and because they make it clear that they
don't charge for WHOIS privacy, for .uk addresses - a lot of domain
hosts implied that they charged for WHOIS privacy.

What conclusions have other umrats come to?

Well, I signed up with Tsohost, and so far all has been fine. I don't
know if they do WHOIS privacy, but they do anything-before-the-@. They
_do_ provide some webspace - 500M with the cheapest package - but you
don't have to use it of course. (Actually it's 500M for your webspace
plus your email storage, but I have them forward all the email to me at
PlusNet, so that's fairly irrelevant.) I don't think they're the
absolute cheapest, but I'd heard they at least have some clue if you
raise a ticket, and I've found that is true. (Once I'd got over the fact
that I always seemed to get help from someone with a Russian-sounding
name - but someone else told me they're largely based in Hungary or
something like that, or at least have a lot of staff there.) FWIW, the
domain registration - which they'll handle for you, but is mostly just
passing on the registration fee - is 7 something a year; the email
handling (including the 500M webspace - is IIRR 14.95 a _year_ (for the
one with the most basic, e. g. least webspace).

Seagoon:
[...] do you suspect sabotage?

Willium:
No, he's in the clear.

Seagoon:
Then whom do you suspect?

Willium:
Russian frogmen dunnit, mate.

Seagoon:
What was their motive?

Willium:
Oo, I don't in to their private affairs, mate, I just accuses 'em,
that's all I do.

Seagoon:
Are you sure the Russians did it?

Willium:
Well I 'aint, mate, but it looks good on the report sheet, dunnit?

Ah - thanks! I'm not as familiar with the Goons as I am with the Guide.

Nowadays, anybody with a DAB radio and a willingness to listen to
Radio 4 Extra can be of the Goons era. Or Take It From Here. Or ITMA.
Or a whole lot more[1].

The last ever episode (a reunion with a terrible write-up in today's ST)
is on R4X sometime this week.

I am not of the goons era.
I grew up with the Telly Goons (cartoonesk TV version using original radio
audio) and was generally annoyed by the musical interludes when the
programmes were repeated on radio in my teens.

Indeed, currently enjoying The Last Goon Show of All on 4ex (having turned
over to escape the dire Gloomsbury).

Ray was a big (original) fan and we listened to them a lot on 4ex. His sons
are familiar with many Goonish turns of phrase and something one of them
said when I was planning his funeral prompted me to select the Ying Tong
Song as the closing music at his funeral - the opening bars confused a few
people...

Did they fall in the water? Or, was it just a case of not being familiar
with the song as they don't write (piano chassis serial) numbers like that
anymore?

Probably a contemporary reference to the demise of "Buster" Crabbe.
