WSJTX new v1.4.0

Just downloaded this new version on my system running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and
it failed to run CAT on my FT947 nor did it find audio from Signalink.
Previous version worked fine though it always showed an error when I first
started the program. But then it proceeded to work fine. Should have left
well enough alone...."if it ain't broke...."

I hate it when someone responds with..."Well it works for me!" And,
I'm a bit embarrassed to be that someone. Rick, I'm not sure of your
specifics...you didn't say which file you downloaded, 32 or 64-bit or
how you installed it. I assume you checked the hash signature to
ensure you got a good copy.

I too downloaded today's new version. I decided I only wanted to take
a quick peek to see if WJST-X was still the same as I'd remembered. I
downloaded the Windows .exe file and ran it under Wine. What could go
wrong?

WJST-X installed without a hitch and within moments I had it running on
32-bit, Mint 17.

A tweak of the properties brought CAT control to my FT-920, although
it appears to be only one-way.

A tweak of the Pulse audio control panel allowed WSJT-X to communicate
with the SignaLink USB interface box. This was a bit confusing to
begin, but after several tries, I got it right.

I don't know if the new version of WSJT-X will work in every situation,
but it worked out of the box for me. I chose the .exe file because
that was the quickest and easiest for me. I've run several digital
programs under Wine in the past, including FreeDV and JT65-HF. All seem
to function properly.

Hi Rickj

Fear not, we'll get things sorted out, but first, it would be helpful if
you could give us a bit of background information.

- Which Ubuntu 14.04 ( x86/32bit or x86_64/64Bit)?
- When you say previous version, are you referring to the WSJT-X in the
Ubuntu Repository (r3496) ?
- Have you setup and installed from John's PPA (AC6SL) previously?
- Which .deb package did you download?
- How did you perform the installation, according to Joe's Website
(WSJT-X User Guide)?
-- Link:
http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx-doc/wsjtx-main.html#INSTALL_LINUX
- Under F2 > Audio Tab, what audio options are being present in the
selection list?

If you used dpkg -i, more than likely, you'll need to install some
dependencies, as dpkg does not resolve deps the same as apt-get or Gdebi
would normally do. WSJT-X v1.3 r3496 is Qt4 based, v1.4 is Qt5 based,
thus the additional package needs.

Based on your feedback, I can steer you in the right direction. Bare in
mind, a tremendous amount of code work as gone into v1.4 as well as many
modifications to the hamlib version that shipped in the .deb package.
While it's painful on your end, it provides valuable feedback to Bill &
Joe on things that need to be resolved before the formal release.

For what it's worth, I use the Navigator Interface, while it's a bit
different than the SignaLink, it's still USB CAT, PTT and USB Audio
Codecs. For Ham Radio activity, I normally set the default Input and
Output audio devices to USB Audio Codec. This is not just for WSJT-X,
but most all Radio applications. I build WSJT-X from source, as well as
Hamlib3, and have had very few issues on the FT-2000D & FT-1000MP, but
those aren't very close to the FT-947 in terms of rig control, but it's
been stable nonetheless.

I followed your procedure without any errors along the way but ended up
with the same result.....USB audio via the SignaLink seems to be working
but CAT control of FT847 is not....at least it says it isn't but PTT does
actually work. Strange.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the info.
You are running the 32bit version of Ubuntu. Not related to WSJT-X, but in
general, on older hardware / lower resource systems, if you want to run
Ubuntu distro flavors, I'd recommend Xubuntu desktop or Lubuntu desktop, as
they require lower system resources such as RAM, resulting in much better
performance overall.
For WSJT-X
* REMOVE OLD WSJT-X
- To be safe, I would recommend uninstalling any previous version of
WSJT-X. Your user files are safe, as it does not remove ~/.wsjtx
- Open a terminal: Ctrl+Alt+T
sudo apt-get remove wsjtx
sudo apt-get update
then,
sudo apt-get -y -q install --reinstall --no-install-recommends \
gdebi libgfortran3 libfftw3-single3 libusb-dev qt5-default
qtmultimedia5-dev \
libqt5multimedia5-plugins
*DOWNLOAD the .deb file
-In a Web-Browser, download
-Link: http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx_1.4.0-rc2_i386.deb
-Then, browse the download location, probably ~/Downloads
-Right Click: wsjtx_1.4.0-rc2_i386.deb
-Open With Gdebi
-Click the install Button.
That should do it. You can run wsjtx from the terminal by typing: wsjtx or
from the Dash >> Search wsjtx and click the WSJT-X Icon. Update your
Setup-Screen ( F2) plus audio selections, then post back the results, and
any issues you may run into.
* TO REMOVE with Gdebi
-Browse the download location
-Right Click: wsjtx_1.4.0-rc2_i386.deb
-Open With Gdebi
-Click the Remove Package Button

I'll do my best to reply to your questions as I'd love to solve this
and unfortunately I deleted the older version I had running.
- Which Ubuntu 14.04 ( x86/32bit or x86_64/64Bit)?
To best answer this question I'm attaching a screen shot of my system.
- When you say previous version, are you referring to the WSJT-X in the
Ubuntu Repository (r3496) ?
Honestly I can't recall if I got it from the Ubuntu Repository or from
John's PPA but I think I got it from the PPA as I recall that the one one
the Repository did not work.
- Have you setup and installed from John's PPA (AC6SL) previously?
Yes I believe so
- Which .deb package did you download?
Not sure as I went a trashed it which was really stupid.
- How did you perform the installation, according to Joe's Website
(WSJT-X User Guide)? YES
http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx-doc/wsjtx-main.html#INSTALL_LINUX
- Under F2 > Audio Tab, what audio options are being present in the
selection list? NONE
I'm fairly new at using Linux (Ubuntu). I did so in an attempt to revive
a PC running Win XP at my little lake house. Shall I say its been an uphill
learning curve for me?!! But I did get a good logging program, DX Cluster,
Fldigi, FLrig and HamLib and some things for satellite work running under
WIne. I'm still working with a developer to fine tune his Satellite
software for the FT-847.
So now you know what I know hi hi. I'd appreciate any help, or should I
just try to go and find the earlier version I had running. despite the
occasional KDV error message?

Hi Rick,

Well that's certainly forward progress :-)

There are several items that Bill ( G4WJS ) is working on with respect
to Rig Control (his Hamlib3 Integration ). He has a issues list going,
and working through them accordingly.

I'm not sure if you particular Rig (FT-847) is in the mix, but it would
be good if you could write up what's transpired, steps taken, results,
and send it to the wsjt-devel list so he can address it specifically.

At this point, I would be guessing what the Rig control issue is. Bill
is the best person to address this particular item as he knows state of
the code updates.

Hi Rick,

I forgot about this item, and it may be a longshot, but on Ubuntu, to
change, use, or otherwise manipulate com ports (/dev/ttyUSB* or
/dev/ttyS* ), the user must be in he dialout group.

If you've not added your user to the group previously:

-Open a terminal: Ctrl+Alt+T
-Then,

sudo -a -G $USER dialout

-Logout and back in, and try WSJT-X again.
