I was fascinated by what looked like a very high performance racing car belting down a country road with some houses in close proximity, and not much in the way of safety, even by the standards of the times (1973). Which is pretty much what it was, not just what it looked like.

What is taking the sting out of race tracks is not just the "emasculation". It's the cars too. Who was talking about it a few years ago? Saying that taking Eau Rouge flat out used to be a real test, but these days with the cars being so much better it's much more easily done.

Jacques Villeneuve used to say that the fast corners - and IIRC he mentioned Blanchimont - are the ones where you've got to have the guts to go in fast and trust the car. But if that's so, and the cars get better...
It used to be rare thing to take Eau Rouge flat out (Villeneuve tried and had a spectacular fail one year), but it became more common as the cars improved. Same drivers. Same balls. Different cars.

Emasculated?Anyway, I don't agree. Whilst a degree of risk is a necessary component
of all motor racing the Burnenville/Masta section of the old circuit was
ridiculously dangerous for the drivers whilst adding little to the
spectator experience (no big TV screens in those days, just an
unreliable Tannoy). The 1970 race was 28 laps with a lap time of around
3:28 whereas the 2016 event was 44 laps at about 1:46 per lap.
The new track has retained almost all the best features of the old Spa:
a long, fast straight; fast sweeping corners; elevation changes; a
double-apex corner and a hairpin, to say nothing of a long racing tradition.
Where I *do* agree with you is that bloody chicane! I never liked the
old Bus-stop but at least it was possible to get through it without
destroying the driver's rhythm but the new one is an abortion similar to
the "new" chicane at Barcelona. Won't stop me enjoying what is still the
best circuit of the year though :-)

It was certainly a great display of F1 cars in action on a circuit where the cars and the drivers can show what they've got, but up front it was mostly a game of follow the leader.
The best moments by far were immediately after the restart, with Vettel challenging Hamilton from the hairpin and into the Kemmel straight. But track position was key. I think what we saw was what was forecast for this season: Faster cars but also worse racing because of the increase in dirty air.
Not much separated Hamilton and Vettel at the end, and it's easy to see a scenario where Vettel had got ahead early on and Hamilton had followed him home.
