Update Slackware -- misunderstanding.

I posted an "Update Slackware" query recently, but it did
not return an answer to my question. Which today, seems
ambiguous owing to unfortunate wording.

My concern in that question is, Is today with something
unfortunate apparently going on with Slackware, possibly a
dangerous time to let updating systems deposit changed or
new Slackware into my machine? ?? Because, if something
unfortunate or dishonest is going on then is it only about
money or does it extend unknown beyond that? If we don't
know who is up to what, the possibilities in today's world
are of serious variety including who is up to what, so
there is more or less possibility an intended update
actually fetches in major nuisance and grief. Which leads
me to feel extremely uncertain about what I might do with
Slackware updates, and I'm not updating my Slackware now
as I have been doing frequently in the past.

My extremest question or choice is, do I want to ask to
be removed from the Slackware list for new update dvds? ??

And, I've been looking for recent news about what is
going on with Slackware. Maybe I'm looking in wrong places
for that. Is there a safely correct resource somewhere
carrying up to date news about the state of things with
Slackware?

Unless the problem between Pat Volkerding and the Slackware Store is
resolved there is a real chance there will NOT be any physical CD's
cq DVD' anymore as it's the store that creates and distributes those.
Pat currently has no control over the store and was thinking about
removing the DNS entry _for_ that store.
And neither is the website really under Pat's control, it was setup by
Walnut Creek, in the time they handled the CD's and Pat's not really
capable of changing it.

On the other hand the ftp site and the mirrors are ok (the first is
hosted by the Oregon State University and the master of the latter
seems to setup by slackbuilds.org) so updates, distributed through
those are OK (and maybe the iso images will be only there too).
AlienBob also creates new, updated iso images on his site which are
UNofficial, see his blog on alien.slackbook.org

The only real news we get are the occasional entries from Pat in
threads on LinuxQuestions.org, forums there drive the updates to
-current. AlienBob (alias for Eric Hameleers) is also present on
that site.
It all still is in a state of flux.

PS: most of the people there _did_ cancel their subscriptions TO the
Slackware Store (see the Donate to Slackware thread).

There's no issues regarding the integrity of Slackware, either the base
system or updates. The main issue that has arisen is
one of funding Slackware, all is expained in the thread.

I gave up after eight pages. The immediate issue is pretty clear, yet
people figure their own point of view will fix things, as if Slackware is
the real issue here.

SOmeone said something like "how can Slackware get a bigger slice of the
users", but I wonder if that's true, or something else? Maybe what's
really happened is that Slackware stopped growing, so while Linux has
grown a whole lot, Slackware stays at a level it reached some time back.

As to "security", I never worried. Pat isn't going through this rogue
"slackware store" to keep the primary FTP site updated, he has control on
that, so "security" never came up in my mind. I have downloaded as needed
from the update section for 14.2, and haven't given any thought to it
being unsafe.

grown a whole lot, Slackware stays at a level it reached some time back.

So, who wants "alleged" improvements? Systemd? PAM? ....or
whatever.

I'm already unhappy with Slack 14.2 and UEFI, so much so, when my
brother bought me a new i3 box, I left it w/ W10. Why? I'm tired of
spending 2 mos configuring every new version of Slackware (I'm slow!).
I use my old Slack version (14.1) on my old box (P4) to talk to my
primary financial institution, cuz W10 is a security nightmare. I jes
don't put any personal info on the new W10 box.

Bottom line: I'm old and lazy and after using Slack fer 15 yrs, I'm
jes not in the mood to "config" it to my needs ...again! (I'll
probably get back to Slack upon the release of a new version)

On my Cheapbytes CD set (iirc) it had the big three distro's, Slackware,
Debian and Red Hat! I wonder if slack isd growning, albeit slowly?

I think there is a slackware derivative with systemd.

I'm booting on a new machine using syslinux, but it appears to support
legacy boot. And syslinux changed its behaviour for no obvious reason.

How much configuring are you doing? Unless you go for the default
plainest of desktop installs all OS's need work after installing. Are
you installing everything or doing a custom install? If the latter
unless you really have too small a disk and are not in a position to fix
that, or are doing a custom build for some larger reason just install
all and ignore what you don't need.

Full install. Whatever it takes to give me a graphics centric box.
That's a lotta configuring fer Slackware. W10 plays graphics of any and
everything, right outta the box. It also tracks you, everywhere, so
that's a major drawback.

Still, not a problem. I'm jes taking a break. ;)

that's a major drawback.

Not a gamer so I avoid hte proprietary drivers like the plague as it is
a whole extra level of complexity. Recently updated this machine but
running new old stock ancient radeon. Not sure if I have a good excuse
to buy something newer.
