Maybe about literacy in the 15th century ?
1450 saw the advent of the prinint press (invented by Gutenberg).
It took off like a rocket. Why ?
Okay, there were many bibles printed.
But : Many, many other books,too (I've got one from 1510 from Ionnes
Sleidanus about Karl) without religious context.
Where did the readers come from ?
Then there's the start of the reformation by Luther - both sides printed
many pamphlets - where did the readers come from ?
There was no great building of new schools between 1450 and 1517; where
did the readers come from ?

There were no Dark Ages on the continent.
Today we reap the peacetime-divident in Europe;
there's more money for History and Archaeology.
Museums and private libraries can be documented -
and look what surfaces nearly every month.

Btw, the thread is started. Next, maybe Tours & Poitiers and
subtle plots ? ;-)

I always smile when scripture comes in handy... in the 21st century.

There is a relevant didactic passage about only those without sin to throw
stones.

Most regulars, if not all, seem unaware of their own off-topic postings, just
because they have posted on-topic in the past. Meta-discussions about off-topic
posting are off-topic themselves -- Surprise.

Analogous to the quantum observer effect, a poster cannot moan about the
abundance of off-topic posts without increasing the number of them, if his
post has only moaning and groaning. It's like pissing against the wind.

Act accordingly, folks.

And instead of those whining posts write something medieval and help YOURSELF.

I opened the one dealing with Medieval Maritime Warfare and as a
result I have ordered the book.

I have yet to finish the book but I can say it is crammed with
information. The pages are thin, the type is small and the text is
dense. There are 55 pages of notes (mostly one or two line),
3+ pages of selected biography but only 7 pages of index.

My biggest criticism is that there are far too few maps, especially
considering that the author (Charles D Stanton) generally makes use of
the names of the time and that many of the places he refers to have
been rubble for centuries.

By his emphasis on maritime aspects Stanton has given me a fresh view
of the wars with which the Meditteranean and the Black Sea were
surrounded in medieval times. At one point Stanton remarked that it
was Christian maritime power which caused all the Muslim capitals to
be located inland. At another he attributes the failure of the third
crusade (was it the third?) to recover Jerusalem to the fact that the
city was out of the range of the christian sea power.

I still have to finish the book but I can highly recommend it.

Crusaders I doubt Christian sea power was much of a factor in
selecting its location.

talking about the 'holy mountain'

In my opinion one of the critical parts of the Crusades was that
pretty much all the leaders of Crusader forces were rubbish on
logistics. If there's one thing "everybody knows" about "The Holy
Land" is that it's dry and arid NOT prime military terrain.

One of the things which emerged from my reading of Stanton's 'Medieval
Maritime Warfare' was a better appreciation of the influence of the
geopolitics of the Mediterranean on the logistical problems of the
crusades. Certainly it was not generally practicable to transport tens
of thousands of crusaders through the Mediterranean by ship. Getting
them to Jerusalem by land through nearly 2000 km of rough and hostile
territory was almost as difficult. No doubt geographical ignorance on
the part of the crusaders also played a part in their difficulties.
