So, has it fallen to me to do these now?... Johnston stopped doing them
a while ago (and hasn't been around much lately), and Obveeus may have
departed for good, as he hasn't been seen in a while...

If so, don't expect these to be "regularly posted" anymore - I'll do
'em when I feel like it. [shrug]

Two-day catch-up here, which will be brief...:

Killjoys (recorded) - "Wargasm". Covered adequately by Jim, though I
think I liked this more than he did. The only thing I didn't like is
Johnny later acting like nothing had happened - the dude would barely
be walking, he wouldn't be all happy-go-lucky.
Anyway, hope they can adequately wrap this show up in the
20-episodes over two seasons to come...

Midnight, Texas (recorded) - "Sexy Beast". I'm a little confused -
Taylor Gildersleeve (now "Taylor Black") didn't look this good when she
did the Lifetime flick "Sugar Daddies"! Has she just put weight on in
*all the right places!* since then?!
Anyway, in this one, the gang fights a succubus (played by Black). I
thought the ending of this one was anti-climatic. We also get more
background on Arielle Kebbel's character (though we still don't know
what she "is", yet...).

Salvation (recorded) - "Coup de Grace". The show may have "jumped the
shark" with this episode. But this one had way too much tedious "shadow
government conspiracy", and not enough everything else. Meanwhile,
Grace should banish her daughter to boarding school (or is it too late
for that?!...), and Liam should run as far away from Jillian as
humanely possible. And Autumn Reeser makes another appearance, as does
John Noble.

One Small Indiscretion (Lieftime) - Vengenful Tiera Skovbye wants to
make Ashley Scott responsible for ruining her life. Unfortunately, she
falls short of the mark... :(

Maggie & Bianca: Fashion Friends (The Netflix) - This one managed to
crack me up in a couple of episodes, especially the episode where the
gang meets the rival band (named "CoolGhost") that they have to beat in
the first round of the music competition, and they're *exactly* like
the gang's band (right down to each person), except that the rival band
is all heartless and cynical and are just in it for the money. I'll
give you one guess as to which band won the first round of the music
competition!
Meanwhile, it seems like Yuki has finally gone completely insane, as
does Miss Tucker in one episode (interestingly, I think Tucker may
actually be played by an Italian-speaking *American* actress, though I
have no way to verfiy this...).

I also watched some more "Violetta" but it's too complicated to
explain. I'm still cracking up at the father's fiancee, though - this
actress is perfect at playing a Spanish-speaking live-action cartoon!!
;)

What did you guys watch?

"Three light sabers? Is that overkill? Or just the right amount
of "kill"?" - M-OC, "A Perilous Rescue" (ep. #2.9), LSW:TFA (08-10-2017)

Just Endeavor. Ppl in a hospital are dying who should have lived. Also he goes looking for Miss Thursday. (He still calls her Miss Thursday.) We like this season better than last year.

What did you watch?
FATHER BROWN: The Sins of Others
Average fare,
IRON FIST: Netflix binge.
In a hurry to finish watching the show.
Can't blame you. :D
THE DEFENDERS, with all 4 heroes, starts on The Netflix here in 2 weeks.
Not 2 weeks...just 4 days...on August 18th. Sadly, I'll be headed off
into the midday sunset by then so I may not get to it for awhile.

The end is near...the world will fall into darkness...well, little bits
of it will, but you have to head towards the light-less if you want the
total experience.

Mostly, though, I'm just going to look for a new place to live.

Yeah, but would he want to hear from Ian?
I don't know. Maybe.
I emailed Ob on behalf of all of us.
Great. We'll see if he found a new spot to live in.
We can but hope. One with good TV reception and usenet!

So, has it fallen to me to do these now?... Johnston stopped doing
them a while ago (and hasn't been around much lately), and Obveeus
may have departed for good, as he hasn't been seen in a while...
Ob said he'd be gone awhile, as he's searching for a new place to live.
Also, eternal-september isn't working now. I can't remember if he uses
it or GG.
I use eternal september.

What did you guys watch?
This will be a multi-day catch up:

Queen Sugar - I binged my way through the final three episodes. Once I
got going it was easier enough to keep at it until I was through them all.

Blood Drive (Faces of Blood Drive) - In the penultimate episode, Arthur
finally falls under the Blood Drive's spell and becomes the "Primo"
while his friends try to talk some sense into him.

Revenge of the Green Dragons (Netflix rental) Martin Scorses produced
this movie about Asian American gangs in the late 80s and early 90s. The
premise was good and it started off interesting enough watching two boys
come to America and quickly fall into a life of crime but then
everything fell apart and I stopped caring. Harry Shum, Jr. stars as
the leader of the main gang and Ray Liotta stars (I guess) as a cop who
doesn't really do anything.

It (blu-ray) - 1990 TV mini series based on Stephen King's novel about a
shape shifting monster that usually takes the shape of a clown named
Pennywise (Tim Curry) The story takes place in two time periods
shifting between the 1950s when Pennywise was stalking a group of kids
(including Jonathan Brandis, Emily Perkins and Seth Green) and the 1990s
when the kids are now grown (including Richard Thomas, John Ritter,
Annette O'Toole, Harry Anderson and Tim Reid) and return to to finally
put an end to Pennywise. I wasn't particular scared or anything but the
movie still holds up well enough and Tim Curry knocked it out of the
park as Pennywise.

Salem's Lot (blu-ray) Tobe Hooper directs this made for TV mini series
based on Stephen King's novel about a small town overrun by vampires. I
really didn't care much for this. At about the half hour mark I was
*really* close to just turning it off. But I stuck with it and it
eventually got better and more or less became watchable. Although in
hindsight I probably should have watched it with the commentary track.

A Return to Salem's Lot (DVD) I thought this was also made for TV but it
apparently got a limited theatrical release. It became clear early on
this wasn't made for TV since this flick was loaded with cursing and
nudity. It stars Michael Moriarty as the reluctant father of budding
juvenile delinquent who takes him to Salem's Lot in hopes some time away
from the big city will help straighten the kid out. They soon find the
town is populated by vampires and their familiars. The head vampire
wants Moriarty to document their existence in a "Bible" while a young
vampire (Tara Reid) sets her sights on the kid. They eventually team up
with an old Nazi Hunter and go on a vampire / familiar killing spree. I
know people seem to prefer the first one, but I saw this when I was a
kid (without knowing the first one even existed) and it always had a
soft spot in my heart.

The Hitman's Bodyguard (theatrical) Ryan Reynolds stars as a formerly
AAA rated bodyguard who has hit hard times. His path to redemption lies
in taking a *foul* mouthed hitman (Samuel L. Jackson) to testify against
a brutal dictator (Gary Oldman somehow managing to sport the same
hairstyle he had in the Fifth Element) at the International Court of
Justice. I reluctantly went to see this mainly because I needed to kill
some time and this was the only movie playing that was going to start
and end at the times I needed it to. But to my surprise it was actually
pretty funny. This movie does not take itself seriously at all. It's
the type of movie where there's a mole inside the agency and you have to
guess who it is by choosing between random actors you've never heard of
before and familiar face whose played the villain in *every* movie/TV
show he's *ever* been in before. Gee, I wonder who the mole could
be...Reynolds is more or less a straight man in this but Jackson's
*nonstop* dropping of Fbombs just works for reason that can't be
explained.

What did you guys watch?
TWIN PEAKS / The Return, Part 17 / 3x17
["The past dictates the future."]
TWIN PEAKS / The Return, Part 18 / 3x18
["What is your name?"]

Wow. Just...wow. What a letdown. No sooner do we finally get "our" Agent
Cooper back in 3x16 than he seemingly becomes some weird hybrid of
himself and Mr. C. And all of those random conversations at the
roadhouse at the end of each episode? Meaningless. Nothing tying them
together at all in the end. Audrey's fate? Audrey who? The last two
episodes make it seem like she never existed. And Sarah Palmer? What was
up with her, exactly? Well, now that it's all over, I can say that we'll
never know. We won't know who or what she is. We won't know why she
freaked out over the jerky display in the store. We won't know why
things seemed to be looping when her TV was showing that boxing match.
And on and on. But what about the many other bits of randomness that
bloated various episodes, taking time away from what I would have rather
seen? Those things ended up mattering, right? Um, no. Like the roadhouse
stuff, none of those random things played any role. Just one example:
the scene outside the Double R after a random gunshot. The one where
Bobby goes running out and finds the screaming woman who kept laying on
her horn because she wanted to get home. The kid slowly climbing up and
emerging in the passenger seat. I kept wanting to think that there'd be
a payoff for that overlong bit of Lynchian self-indulgence, but no such
luck. I don't need everything wrapped up with a pretty bow at the end of
every bit of fiction that I watch or read. I really don't. But I need
more than I got here. A lot more. Meanwhile, the usual Lynch apologists
are making all kinds of excuses all over the Web and calling these final
two outings brilliant even as they admit that they have no idea what
they just watched. Unreal.

Grade: C- for 3x17 / D for 3x18

THE LAST SHIP / Nostos / 4x04

[The crew searches for one of their own as enemies close in on all
sides. Slattery is haunted by visions of the past.]

Maybe it was residual bitterness over TWIN PEAKS, but this week's outing
of THE LAST SHIP was lame for me, too. We get an entire hour of filler
spent in rescuing Capt. Slattery -- something that should have been
about a ten minute diversion if the writers actually had a season's
worth of story to tell. As he staggers around Sardinia and leaves blood
trails everywhere (how much blood does he have, anyway?), Slattery is
considerate enough to open his satchel and pull out the canister with
the seeds so that we, the audience, can be assured that he has them. And
he checks out his knife wound a couple of times to remind us that he has
been stabbed. Because we're really dense and need these reminders,
apparently. We do get some Slattery backstory on the family side of
things, but none of it is particularly new or enlightening. Along the
way, we learn that the Nathan James's helo is completely bulletproof and
that one of our guys with a pistol and a lightpost to hide behind can
take out a half-dozen guys with Uzis.

THE STRAIN / Extraction / 4x08

[Reeling from loss, our heroes regroup. To defeat the Master, they must
locate him first. Our heroes devise a new plan to track him through
human collaborators, beginning at the blood farm with someone Dutch
knows all too well.]

"I have been a witness to human mortality for more than 2,000 years. I
know that a single human life is too often just a flicker in the
darkness. We should not mourn this man. His death was inevitable.
Instead, we should remember what it is that he showed us: that the real
impact of a life depends on will -- the determination to keep on
fighting, no matter the cost. His life was a beacon for all of us."

After his battle with Eichorst and his resultant infection, Setrakian
has looked better. He has a new theory for how to take out The Master,
but there is some concern that it was the worms talking. For better or
worse, Fet and Quinlan make it back and rejoin the team just in time to
say goodbye to the old man, and it falls to Quinlan to do the
inevitable. Fet inherits Setrakian's sword, courtesy of Quinlan, who
tells him that it's what the old man would have wanted. Lots of
bummed-out discussion ensues. Quinlan later gets a chance to be his
badass self on a couple of occasions and Dutch gets a measure of revenge
when the gang successfully puts Desai in their sights, capturing him to
use as bait and freeing a bunch of held women at the same time. Eph
hears a rumor of a kid that might be his son and takes off to see if he
can find him. Sadly, he does. Now we can only hope that he kills the
little s@$#heel. Slowly and painfully.

Would one going off on Manhattan Island itself do all that much more

We have several problems here. Liberty Island is only 3 miles from
Manhattan; I would think the damage would be a lot worse. Manhattan is
only a couple miles across, although it's more like 13 miles long. The
Master's lair is in the tippy top of the Empire State Building
(apparently he ate Doc Savage), so we aren't planning on setting it off
underground, we want to fly that damn plane into the observation deck at
1000 foot altitude, and push the *boom* button.

The Liberty Island bomb didn't cause the nuclear winter, although I
think that was their original intention before somebody pointed out that
they must have 'tards writing it. They glossed over very quickly that
several others set off their nuke in response; that's what fucked the
world up. I have no idea how the Master could have foreseen that - the
actual result of his plan should have simply been to make NYC
uninhabitable.

The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs totally obliterated everything within a
mile of ground zero (and 1000 feet up is probably optimal to ensue
wackiness). So if he only had one of those, he's taking out Manhattan
completely the short way, and leave behind a couple miles of tip on
either end that are completely uninhabitable.

Oh, cool. Here's a disreputable source with maps showing what those
bombs would do to NYC:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/08/05/what-it-would-look
-like-if-the-hiroshima-bomb-hit-your-city/

And, you know, I'd be amazed if whatever our heroes have isn't at least
10x more powerful. Of course, there's no way Manhattan should have
survived the Liberty Island bomb in the first place.

About 2/3 of the way down they show a 60kt hit on New York. Forget
everything south of Central Park instantly. And say goodbye to
Brooklyn. And New Jersey, hellspawning place of Kelly Lee Ripa.

All these people are dead. Dead dead dead dead dead. They don't know
it yet, but they're all dead. Dead as F's evil wife.

You're sitting in the missile silo in China. You get the message that
somebody nuked NYC. Do you fire a missile at NYC, or do you assume it
doesn't really *need* another? I'd assume it was gone and retarget to
France or something.
Most of the major cities have multiple warhead targeted on them for a
couple of reasons. Not all of them may reach the target and just one
nuke won't actually destroy all of a large city. Depending on the
warhead, the total destruction radius is usually only a mile or two.

I must have blocked out the
stupidity. I mean, seriously, why would an accidental nuke set off in
your own country escalate into a global nuclear event?
Because it's still the Kennedy administration where he almost got us all

Which time? It *was* Kennedy, after all. To be fair, dealing with

Sigh. Yeah. It doesn't look like they attacked America, does it? So I

India just set off their own thorium reactors in solidarity.
If there's a way to make it make sense, I'm not seeing it.
And you can just travel across the USA from NYC to, what, West Dakota or

Yeah, they'd probably want to take a major detour around Chicago, at the
very least.

The guys in the silos can't retarget anything. All they can do is turn
their keys and launch when they receive a valid order. The last thing
you want is some E3 reprogramming the missiles to go other than where
the Pentagon (or the Chinese Politburo) wants them to go.

Okay, how about the sub commanders - they can switch to secondary
targets, can't they?

Seriously, if there was a fucking nuclear war, and none of these people
can redirect their missiles, and nobody dropped a second one on NYC, the
stupidity level just went up to 11.

Subs are the same way. The missiles are programmed by the Pentagon.
Which ones get launched are determined by the order received by the sub.

There may be some additional protocols for subs because of the
possibility they could be out of comms range if they're deep underwater
when war breaks out, but I doubt it boils down to "they can reprogram
the missiles to go wherever the crew wants to send them".

Um, no. Like the roadhouse
the scene outside the Double R after a random gunshot.
It seemed that Lynch just had to go and pull the rug out from under all
the fans who rejoiced when Coop awakens from the Dougie coma and
proclaims "I AM the FBI!"

Exactly. It was bad enough to have to wait 16 episodes to get the heart
and soul of the original show back. To then do what Lynch did was almost
like an "F you!" to the fans.

If you want to read the most interesting interpretation of the finale -
this guy may have given it more thought than Lynch himself - go here:

https://www.waggish.org/2017/twin-peaks-finale/

I especially like that it includes mention of the really old car Coop
and Diane choose to take on their final journey - a detail that really
jumped out at me as I was watching - but one that's rarely mentioned
elsewhere.

There are all kinds of theories out there, but they all require a lot of
wanking. And that's *after* watching everything closely for 18 episodes.

What did you guys watch?
I watched:

CHEATERS:
Several eps, including:
• Lisa Ramirez and in the followup segment, a woman recalled
her feelings after confronting her boyfriend, his wife, and family at
some sort of family reunion. I want to see that one.
• Phillip Rhodes, the pyschopath seen in opening credits whispering into
his wife's ear, discovers his wife receiving a little more than
emotional support from a co-worker.
• Rebecca Efurd, girl who was so angry she tried to throw a flaming
faggot at her cheating bf, only to miss and hit the host in the back of
the head! They sent him to the ER, all the while saying he was OK and
was more concerned about the welfare of their client.

RICK AND MORTY:
Third season marathon.

FAMILY GUY:
"Underage Peter". When Mayor West raises the drinking age to 50 as a
result of Peter's drunken antics, Brian is the only one eligible to buy
alcohol because, in dog years, his age qualifies him. I guess they
forgot that Quagmire is 60.

TCM UNDERGROUND:
"Demon Seed". Recorded for later viewing.

Demon Seed is a terrible movie, but Julie Christie is at her absolute
loveliest.
