This one I've known about for quite a while, but basically anywhere you
can get a headwind strong enough with an aircraft with a stall speed
higher than the headwind speed, you can make this happen.

If 10 feet was unbelievable, watch this one:

I believe the Fieseler Storch was the first really effective STOL
aircraft. In a headwind (don't know the speed) it could fly backward.

That certainly was one of the very first if it wasn't the outright
first, yeah.

:-)

The British were producing the Westland Lysander at almost precisely the
same time:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westland_Lysander

Their first flights (as recorded by Wikipedia) were less than a month
apart, but the Storch was first.

Nope.

Because I had already seen this:

Personally, I find it amusing how many people believe that if they see
something for the first time, then it must be an incredible revelation
to everyone they tell about it.

Around here we call it Trump Syndrome. "Not many people know ..." means "I just learned ..."

In 1976 my highschool physics teacher told us how during the war he did a little bit of flying training in Tiger Moths, and in a decent NZ wind they could fly backwards across the airfield.

My stepdad had the delight of flying with a crazy outback helicopter
pilot the day after he asked what would happen if the engine quit. The
pilot explained about autorotation, but the next day, he demonstrated it.

He flew a normal landing pattern, but instead of ending up at 15-20'
above the taxiway and finally his landing pad, he was still at altitude.
He calmly switched of the engine, looked at my stepdad and said:

"Well... ...you did ask."

*supposed relative.
(I wouldn't put it beyond you to be a falsehood)
It certainly looks like you're "indulging" the very thing you
wanted "Sir Tim" to avoid, doesn't it?
That is a flasehood
No. It's not.
Here you are trying to rebut the very "nonsense" you wanted "Sir
Tim" to eschew.
That is another falsehood.
I responded directly to one of your falsehoods.
1. It wasn't a falsehood.
Yes, it clearly is.

I'm not bothering anyone, pet...

(well: except you obviously)

Anyone who reads the subject line gets to decide for his or herself
whether or not to read the rest.

But perhaps that's just another thing you haven't figured out yet.

Sorry, but emphasis doesn't come through in text:

Still can't live by the rules you want others to follow...

As that claim bears no relevance to anything I wrote it is meaningless.

I think I may have mentioned to you before.

1. Stop posting without reading or thinking about what you are typing.
2. Your reading comprehenison skills are well below average, so...
really; stop posting without reading or thinking about what you are
typing.
3. I have no interest in your dead relatives, real or imagined; they
are quite irrelevant.
4. Stop posting irrelevant shit.

NB these are suggestions not rules.

Er..
1. What *rules*?
When you suggest a course of action to be used in all cases that is a
RULE. You seem to be completely lacking in any sense of nuance, so I'll
help you:

'Definition of rule
1
a : a prescribed guide for conduct or action'

<https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/rule>

You prescribed a "guide for conduct" to Sir Tim that you, yourself,
don't follow.

Got it now?

there?).

I didn't write "meaningless crap". I wrote something which you weren't
bright enough to comprehend without adding additional characters to show
emphasis.

What I wrote was in direct reply to something you'd said and pointed out
that there was support for my earlier claim.

And here you still are...

I call bull shit on that one - prove it

Yup. That's my grandfather. I didn't see that much of him as we only
made one trip to England while he was still alive, and my grandparents
only came over to Canada a couple of times, but I remember that you
could wheedle him into popping off his dentures and jutting his false
teeth out at you.

That was my thought on reading the first post (OT posts get read last for
me), harrier and rotor craft..... i.e. define "airplane".
