I wonder if any other umrats were caught in BA’s hack trap? At 6.00am
yesterday I cancelled my debit and credit cards and hope to have
replacements within a week. Meantime, I have the £80 in my purse at the
time. Or rather, had.
Petrol was required this morning and I could only spend £20 on that. How
carefully I watched the digits flicking up on the pump, which halted at
£19.99. Phew!
Thence to the Co-op, to survey the items with an orange reduced sticker.
(Swerve) One reduced item was a soya and linseed loaf, apparently reduced
from £5 to £3.75, which I pointed out to the staff. Oh how we larfed!
(Swerve back) I counted my way around the store as I put each item in the
basket. I have been fortunate not to have to do this too often since my
Great Cash Crisis of 1985-9 but realise that many people live like this
every week. Next week, when I shop with my new card, I shall buy what I
want and utter a prayer of thanks.

Too late for your Co-op visit, but is it not still possible to cash a

You should perhaps, have a word with that MP who a few years ago claimed to
be able to exist on tuppence ha’penny or somesuch a week; I feel sure he
could give you some pointers before rushing off to the subsided eateries in
the Houses of Westminster.

My bank’s branch in the town was closed last year. Nearest branch now is 20

It is quite useful to have at least two different credit and/or debit

You are right,Vicky. I use only my bank’s debit card and its own credit
card. I could get a different credit card as back up but I’m not much of a
customer as I pay off my bill each month. I hope the back up would be used
only very rarely. The last time would have been three or four years ago
when someone cloned my credit card.

We have several credit cards because our main one is Amex and it can't
be used everywhere. Some get used more than others but they all get paid
off every month.

Ah yes, I remember when Amex wasn't taken in a lot of places:

(There's another reason - or two - why I remember that, too. IIRR they
stopped using that slogan more or less overnight after that).

Yes. And to ensure that you never depend on a credit card issued by the
same organisation you bank with.

Yes, I agree. And I don't blame them in the slightest: they are private
companies and they are only there to provide a profit for their
shareholders.

Many other countries I am aware of have a state banking operation in
parallel with the private banking firms and have a presence in most
communities. Our national bank is just an office in London and the Post
Office doesn't belong to the country any more.

And the answer isn't IMO a cashless society. If the computer says "no" -
either to the whole banking system as in TSB, NatWest and others
recently or to you as an individual - then without cash, you are stuffed.

‘Use it or lose it’ as they used to declaim. To support this, rarely is
there more than 25% of the available ‘windows’ staffed but to make you feel
that you are ‘moving’ in the queue, a roped-off line is described on the
floor and furnished with ‘queue here’ signs every few yards that snakes
around the available floor space in such a way that you might think you are
‘nearly there’.

You may be able to cash a cheque at the local PO. At least some
banks[1] came to an arrangement with the PO to do this, as a sweetener
when they were closing branches.

[1] Lloyds certainly did, and I assume it's still current. I'm pretty
sure they weren't alone in this but I can't remember how many banks had
this agreement.

Give us a few details
We’ll then send you an email within 1-2 working days, which you’ll
need to share with your friend.

2
Your friend switches their account
They’ll need to switch their main current account to a Nationwide
FlexAccount, FlexPlus or FlexDirect account within 90 days of the
recommendation, and transfer at least two Direct Debits as part of the
switch (standing orders and recurring card payments don't qualify).

3
Your friend follows the link in the email you shared
Your friend will then need to give us their details, including their
switch reference number, which they’ll have received when the switch

You both get £100
As long as the terms and conditions of the offer are met, you’ll both
get £100. Why stop there? Earn up to £500 every tax year by

I have a Nationwide account as well as an HSBC one. I've had the
Nationwide one since I was 16 and keep it as a fallback, but really it's
mostly for sentimental reasons as they have closed every single local
branch in SE London except for Eltham where you can't park. They keep
trumpeting how many awards they win for best bank but I can't say
they've been in the least helpful to me.

I fell out with HSBC, having been with them since my first account
when I went ot university, but got a First Direct one. Nationwide have
been helpful to me. I had a few OAP moments and they were good :). I
never go to banks anyway, just online, although B prefers High St
ones.
