GMAIL: why I can't download my email?

Hi, I have some gmail accounts and all works fine with Eudora 7.1.
From yesterday I can't download anymore the emails of one account.
I entered into my account in the web and I changed email many times,
but without solving the problem. I made also a security check but I
have the same problem. What can I do please? Can I write to GMAIL?
I don't know what I could do.
Thanks for some info.

Insufficient information... Eudora should, at the least, have shown
some sort of error message if it is unable to get mail from an account.

Since gmail is involved, the most likely culprit is Google's paranoid
changing of certificates every couple of weeks. If you check the history of
the newsgroup, you should be able to find posts on how to verify/update
Eudora's certificate store (which will only be good until the next time
gmail changes certificates).

I'm sorry, you are right. This is the message of Eudora:

Well, as it states -- the server you are trying to connect to does not
appear to support POP3 (if it once did, Google may have changed things
again). The text after "ERR" is directly from the server itself and is not
a Eudora message.

Did you bother to check what the provided URL says?
https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78754
(Not that it was much help -- that link talks about using IMAP... but does
have link to the POP3 instructions)
https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7104828

The first part appears to be that one has to enable POP3 using the web
GMAIL interface first:

"""
First, set up POP in Gmail

On your computer, open Gmail.
In the top right, click Settings Settings.
Click Settings.
Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
In the "POP Download" section, select Enable POP for all mail or Enable
POP for mail that arrives from now on.
At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.
"""

I don't know if that is something new, or if you'd done that once
before -- if you had, it maybe didn't stick.

The only other approach I'd have would be to enable /all/ logging (all
bytes sent/received) in Eudora, attempt a retrieval, and examine the log to
see what it is providing to gmail at the point of error -- and compare that
to a working connection for differences.

Since it is GMAIL that is objecting, and not a Eudora error (failure to
connect due to bad certificate probably won't report a server error
message) -- you may have to talk with gmail support (who will most likely
go: Eudora? What's that. Pandora, in trial mode, allows for one email
address -- you might download/install Pandora, configure it for the problem
account, and see if IT can get through.)

It is incredible but today neither my yahoo accounts don't work.
Out of curiosity about Pandora:
Is it a more modern client than Eudora?
Is it possible to import emails (messages) from Eudora to Pandora?
Is it possible to configure Pandora getting IN and OUT mailboxes in
the same page?
If you don't understand my latest question I will send you a scree.
Thanks for your news.

And what type of error message are they reporting.
Post by i***@jejejeje.it
Is it a more modern client than Eudora?
It is still being developed -- "AND" conditions in filters only started
working a few weeks ago, "references" headers were only implemented last
week (without them some mailing lists had difficulty threading replies).
Personalities don't seem to picked up when doing a reply -- I have to
select the "from" and "signatures" to ensure the mailing list doesn't
reject the message. And the Junk mail processing doesn't appear to have a
learn-mode -- I think it just relies upon external scoring systems; I'm
about to create filters for the daily spam providers.
Post by i***@jejejeje.it

I didn't try, but since it supposedly can import personalities and
filters, the mailboxes should be no problem.
Post by i***@jejejeje.it
Is it possible to configure Pandora getting IN and OUT mailboxes in
the same page?
I don't understand that question. At present, I'm running Pandora in
parallel with Eudora (Pandora is configured to leave mail on the server for
three days, Eudora is set for two days, so it should be "master"). I've
managed to get Pandora to look about the same as my Eudora configuration.
Biggest annoyance -- Pandora goes on-line to fetch images/etc. that so many
companies insist on stuffing into their emails at the time one opens the
message; so classical operations (fetch/disconnect/read off-line) can't
really be performed.

(Yes, I paid to have the non-demo mode)

It does support MDI, though I've always run email in SDI mode. MDI
doesn't leave enough space (IMHO) to actually read messages.

As mentioned, it is still under development -- there have been three
releases since I started running it in parallel with Eudora (which was only
a month ago; so a release almost every two weeks -- no idea if that is a
planned development schedule or just coincidence). (Don't go by the 2014
copyright on the release notes). "Match Any" vs "Match All" criteria for
filters only started working two releases ago (Where Eudora only allowed
for two "match" criteria per filter, Pandora lets one add many criteria to
a single filter -- but the default had been "match any", so it wasn't
possible to have a "if message has A AND message has B").

I'd recommend you take the time to download the limited demo mode (one
personality, one filter [? release notes say 1.5.2 removed that limit],
some other limits -- signature/stationery?), try configuring it (set the
server/personality to leave mail on the server so Eudora will still see
them, and set Eudora to leave them for a few days so Pandora also sees them
before Eudora clears them from the server).

Better -- pay for the unlocked version (pricing is US$ 14), configure
it as close to your Eudora setup, and run both in parallel. When you find
something that isn't working -- or works differently -- submit a problem
report (Help/Send Feedback/Suggest a New Feature or Report a Bug).

Most problems with gmail are not found in the INI file -- they are in
the certificate store used by Eudora. While there is a usercerts.p7b file
in AppData, that may not have all of the certificates. (Hmm, I seem to have
an expired certificate issued to hostmonster.com; and earthlink's expires
may 2019)

If it isn't a certificate problem, and if you have other gmail
personalities that ARE working, it comes down to:

A) comparing the personalities in the INI file to ensure that everything
-- except account name/password -- looks the same between the working and
misbehaving one; OR

B) the problem is at the gmail server side, and that means using a web
access to a configuration page or talking directly with gmail technicians.

BTW: sending your INI file to someone else means you are sending them
your login information, including passwords (unless you have Eudora
configured to never remember passwords and force you to enter them every
time it runs). Passwords are stored in BASE-64 format, which is easy to
convert back to text. If you did have someone work on the INI file, you'd
have to immediately go in and change all your email account passwords to
something new.

ME? My first approach would be to make sure the esoteric plug-in is in
place, then set up the logging options to log EVERYTHING (including all
bytes sent and received); Perform a "get mail" operation on all accounts;
then examine the log file to see if there is something different in how the
failing account is negotiating the connection.

mailboxes as you want.

Did you look at Sid's reply? Your gmail problem may be caused by not
having enabled the setting in gmail to "Let less secure apps access
your account" "less secure" means any client that in not gmail.

And you'll get that so long as Google keeps changing certificates every
couple of weeks -- whereas other ISPs and servers keep certificates for two
years or so. (Though I though the Google cycle was closer to two weeks, not
weekly -- weekly makes me suspect you have your Eudora data, including
certificate store, in a Windows protected directory, with the result that
your "renew" is writing a shadow file, which is periodically gets cleaned
out causing a reversion to the old master certificate store.)

There is nothing you can do with Eudora to alleviate the unknown
certificate problem as it relies upon its own store of root certificates,
and those root certificates are themselves out-of-date and can not be
updated. Most newer programs rely upon the WINDOWS certificate store (the
one used by Internet Explorer and other parts of Windows).

Heh -- looking at the documentation, the default config_windows has
everything commented out... except for settings just for:

gmail-pop3
gmail-imap
gmail-smtp

Presuming starting stunnel isn't too difficult (I didn't look to see if
it can be installed as a Windows Service), it looks like the main
requirement would be to reconfigure the gmail accounts in Eudora to connect
to localhost (127.0.0.1) on the NON-secure service ports. {Hmm, "features"

I'm using 5.37, don't know how many bits. Very little changes wrt this
stuff, so there is no need to update when new versions come out.
Probably the biggest change was that he set it up for gmail for you, and
don't require you to set that part up in Stunnel (though you do have to
make changes in Eudora). OTOH, for Agent v1.93, an old version written
before SSL existed, I had to add or uncomment lines in stunnel.conf
also.

Somewhere in the setup online for gmail is a setting to "allow less
secure app" which needs to be set if you want to run with Eudora. (Its
default setting is "don't allow" and gmail won't allow Eudora to connect
that way so you have to specifically change it).

I'm sorry but I can't recall offhand where this is in the setup (and

Sorry -- the only reason I possess a gmail account is because my
Samsung/Nook (the old Galaxy Tab 4 version, and now my Samsung phone Galaxy
S9+) require one to use the app stores. And as a result, only the
tablet/phone are configured to process mail from that account.

I'm flip-flopping on whether to configure the non-gmail mail app for my
"real" email accounts, but that might ire Earthlink -- I already have both
Eudora and Pandora running in parallel; think what it might be like if I
now have the Nook and phone also fetching emails in parallel. I miss a
feature that the old old old Blackberry Bold supported -- Blackberry
provided an email server which could have filters defined for my other
email addresses; if a message passed the filter, Blackberry would "copy" it
from regular ISP and send it to the phone. That allowed me to define
filters specific to family addresses for emergencies, but not transfer all
the routine spam and stuff.

I have configured my gmail account some years ago to forward all incoming mail to my local provider, due to the same problem - not being able to use POP with gmail. Works perfectly.

Non Sequitur: and people wonder why I stick with Earthlink's flaky
(AT&T) slow DSL. Because my ISP grants me up to 8 separate email accounts
(I'm using 4), each with a 10MB web space (useful for quick&dirty file
sharing), and a (grand-fathered -- new accounts don't get it) Usenet
access.

but without solving the problem. I made also a security check but I
have the same problem. What can I do please? Can I write to GMAIL?
I don't know what I could do.
Thanks for some info.
Does there exist an E-mail provider that works well with Eudora (POP3)
without all the crap of GMAIL
Yes, all of them except Gmail.

or Yahoo,
I gather yahoo has the same problems as aol/verizon, but they are not
especially related to Eudora.

So, all of them but gmail, yahoo, aol, and verizon.

I use Fastmail for $30 a year.

I hope someone can help me as soon as possible.
I have two gmail accounts and from some days I am able to download
the messages with one only. With oter account I get this error:
Loading Image...

I assure you the accounts both are configured the same. Maybe gmail
blocked me because I used that account out of home? I used it in
another place. I don't know if it is the reason even because if I go
into web gmail I see bpth accounts are configured the same.
Look: Loading Image...
Maybe is there another option to come out from thar problem?
Thanks

And have you looked at the URL the message provided? (though that
redirects to the general IMAP configuration page -- and on that page there
is this link: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833 which may
be your problem)

That link goes in security account options but everything is OK. But
my gmail account doesn't work with Eudora 7.

Perhaps you should read what Dennis is suggesting instead of being so
dismissive. Either that or explain what you mean by "everything is OK".

Gmail security has to be set to insecure client (or whatever their
terminology is - it's been a long time) in order to work with Eudora.
