BURNABY, B.C. - Federal New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh took aim at the
Liberal government's investment in the Trans Mountain pipeline and its lack of
spending on housing and Pharmacare while announcing he'll run for a seat in
Parliament in Burnaby, B.C.

Singh announced Wednesday his candidacy for the riding of Burnaby South, which
former New Democrat MP Kennedy Stewart recently gave up to run for mayor in
Vancouver.

I used to live in the riding. It is very NDP.

I hope he gets elected...that will drive even more people away from the NDP
federally. The man is a twit IMHO.

He's not a twit. He is very well-spoken and educated. But the fact that he was born in Canada - Toronto - and chose to wear a turban through life, means he is still more of a Sikh than he is a non-denominational representative in government.

He also choked when asked to condemn the sikhs behind Canada's largest mass murder in our history.

The NDP delegates in Edmonton - and the party itself since then - have screwed up.

He's a Free Khalistan partizan.
The PQists have dumped the BLOK and they're going NUDES.
So far as I can see it's a dead horse race.

Regardless of your odd writing style, you're about seven years behind the times.
The NDP lost over 40 seats in Quebec last election.

I was intending to imply the PQist cause is also something of an
anachronism ...

I won't be surprised if he loses.
And this was probably the first time he heard about the place.

This is what is wrong with Canadian democracy. Some nobody from GTA pretending to represent the people from another end of the mighty big country.

What this will be is only the test of intelligence of the residents of Burnaby.

The lower mainland has the highest number of Sikhs of any province. And they are very, very active in politics. And they will make sure Jagmeet Singh is elected.

Why Sikhs are so powerful in Canadian politics

After all, the country only has 500,000 Sikhs, accounting for a little more than one per cent of all Canadians.

But more than 12 per cent of federal Liberal cabinet ministers are Sikhs, including Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan. There are 14 Liberal Sikh MPs, says Kwantlen Polytechnic University political scientist Shinder Purewal. Liberals hold all nine federal ridings in which Punjabi Sikhs predominate, says Purewal, plus 11 more in which the South Asian population is significant.

Sikhs also profoundly shape the New Democratic Party. They played a huge role in the elevation of Jagmeet Singh to leadership of the federal NDP.

Way over-represented in our Liberal cabinet. Trudeau is a fool.
