Some places (my nearest supermarket for one) no longer accept
cheques. What they would do in that case is another matter.
Cash a cheque across a bank counter, just like we used to before plastic.

Not if the computers are down.
The compouters are not necessary. This system was in operation before
a computer terminal was ever placed in a bank branch.
Is it even possible to open a cash register drawer without electronic
assistance?
